REPEATED ADDITION
Cookie Math!
The symbol x means multiplication.
Multiplication means to have many groups of the same size.
EXAMPLE 1:
There are five groups, and each group has two elephants.
5 × 2 = 10
five timesTwo
elephantsis ten elephants
How many in each group
5 x 2 = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10
How many groups We can solve it by adding
EXAMPLE 2:
how many groups
how manyin each group
3 × 4 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12
three times four dogs is twelve dogs
We can solveit by adding.
There are three groups, and each group has four dogs.3 × 4 = 12
Zeros
Any number multiplied by ZERO is ZERO!
0 x 0 = 0 0 x 1 = 0 0 x 2 = 0 0 x 3 = 0 0 x 4 = 0
0 x 5 = 0 0 x 6 = 0 0 x 7 = 0 0 x 8 = 0 0 x 9 = 0
1 x 0 = 0 2 x 0 = 0 3 x 0 = 0 4 x 0 = 0 5 x 0 = 0
6 x 0 = 0 7 x 0 = 0 8 x 0 = 0 9 x 0 = 0
0 cookies, each having 2 chocolate chips, equal 0 chocolate chips
ONES
Any number multiplied by ONE is itself!
1 x 0 = 0 1 x 1 = 1 1 x 2 = 2 1 x 3 = 3 1 x 4 = 4
1 x 5 = 5 1 x 6 = 6 1 x 7 = 7 1 x 8 = 8 1 x 9 = 9
1 cookie having 4 chocolate chips, equals 4 chocolate chip
TWOS
2 x 5 = 102 cookies, each having 5 chocolate chips, equal 10 chocolate chips
5 + 5
remember the TWOs is doubling 5 doubled is 10 (5 + 5 = 10)
3 + 3
2 x 3 = 62 cookies, each having 3 chocolate chips, equal 6 chocolate chips
THREES
5 + 5 + 5
3 cookies, each having 5 chocolate chips, equal 15 chocolate chips
3 x 5 = 15
Skip Counting (by 3's) Skip counting is counting while skipping one or more numbers. To skip count by 3's, skip two numbers while counting. (3...6...9...) Many refer to this a "counting by 3's 3 x 5 is skip counting five times or 3...6...9...12...15 and you are at the answer
FOURS
6 + 6 + 6 + 6
4 x 6 = 244 cookies, each having 6 chocolate chips, equal 24 chocolate chips
Double-Double Double-double the number you are multiplying four by. (Double it twice)
4 x 6 (Double 6 Twice) 6 doubled once is 12, 12 doubled is 24
Another way to figure the answer is double the answer you would get if you multiplied the number by 2.
6 x 2 = 12 12 x 2 = 24
FIVES
6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6
5 x 6 = 305 cookies, each having 6 chocolate chips, equal 30 chocolate chips
Skip Counting (by 5's) To skip count by 5's, skip 4 numbers while counting. (5...10...15...20...)
Many refer to this a "counting by 5's 5 x 6 is skip counting six times or 5...10...15...20...25...30 and you are at the
answer
SIXES
5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5
6 x 5 = 306 cookies, each having 5 chocolate chips, equal 30 chocolate chips
There is no easy trick to remember the sixes, this is why it is important to memorize your times tables.
SEVENS
8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8
7 x 8 = 567 cookies, each having 8 chocolate chips, equal 56 chocolate chips
There is no easy trick to remember the sevens.
EIGHTS
6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6
8 x 6 = 488 cookies, each having 6 chocolate chips, equal 48 chocolate chips
There is no easy trick to remember the eights.
NINES
6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 +6
9 x 6 = 546 cookies, each having 9 chocolate chips, equal 54 chocolate chips
Using Your Fingers - 9 x 6 = 54
Step 1: Put your hands on the table in front of you.
Step 2: Your fingers represent the numbers 1 through 10.
Step 3: - Each finger to the left of the curled finger represents 10. - Say 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 - Each finger to the right of the curled finger represents one. - Count 1, 2, 3, 4. (Or 51, 52, 53, 54) - 6 x 9 = 54
