Sir – I am a resident ofRamakrishnapuram 3rd Street, T.Nagar. Recently Corporation work-ers, without any information to theresidents, dug a trench on ourstreet in the middle of the night toconstruct a storm water drain.When the residents got up in themorning, they were shocked tonotice that there was a trench infront of their gates. Many hadparked their vehicles inside thecompound of the house the previ-ous night and were forced to usewooden planks and other means totake them out which caused a greatamount of inconvenience.

When our Association contactedthe Division engineers, they re-plied that they were not aware ofthe work and asked us to contactthe storm water drain departmentat Corporation HO.

Similarly, a trenchhas been dug right in front of thegate of Sharma Park (HabibullahRoad, T. Nagar) blocking theaccess to the park which is used bya number of senior citizens.

Sir, I am a resident of MotilalStreet (T. Nagar). On March 28 at1 p.m, an elderly woman residingin Shree Bagh Flats on our street,while walking on the roadside,fractured her left foot after it gottrapped in one of the open 1-foot-wide inlets of the storm waterdrain. She has been advised toundergo surgery costing thousandsof rupees by an orthopaedician tocorrect the problem.

The storm water drain work inour street was completed a coupleof months ago. The inlets pro-vided at various points are uncov-ered. Our Association had pointedout to the Corporation officials atthe time of construction of thedrain itself to close the inlets withstrainers. When no action wastaken by the Corporation, we ap-proached Mayor Saidai Durais-wamy with our grievances. Hevisited out street a couple of weeksago and instructed the accompany-

ing officials to immediately ad-dress the problem. When still noaction was taken, we spoke to theChief Engineer (Storm WaterDrains Department, Rippon Build-ing) who confirmed of havingreceived this information and saidhe will advise the officials to closeall the inlets immediately.

We also propose to claim com-pensation from Chennai Corpora-tion for the medical expenses to beincurred by the woman who metwith the mishap due to the shoddywork undertaken by the Corpora-tion and its laxity in correcting theproblem.

On testing the seized prod-ucts, they found that the rawmaterials used in making theseitems are banned and areharmful to health and can causeailments like hepatitis, stom-ach diseases and typhoid, es-pecially in children.

Consumer activists wel-comed the department’s move,but urged the officials to alsolocate and raid the manufac-turing units.
