By RANDOR GUY

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 24While 1950s chased the fast approaching next decade-

1960s, G. Ramanathan, movie music maestro, was in his bestform since he had begun composing songs several years earlier.

In 1956 he scored music for a hit movie ‘Naan Petra Selvam’which was directed by K. Somu, an experienced Tamil filmmakerwith a good track record. Earlier he had worked as AssistantDirector under the American Tamil filmmaker, Ellis R.Dungan.Produced by A. M. Ismail for Pioneer Productions, it waswritten by the leading film personality of Tamil cinema, A. P.Nagarajan, who wrote stories and dialogues for many movies, directed quite a many and also acted in more than many!

The film had the Tamil film icon Sivaji Ganesan and multi-lingual star-actress, G. Varalaskhmi in lead roles with anexcellent supporting cast consisting of top class artistes like M.N. Nambiar, M. N. Rajam, K. Sarangapani, V. K. Ramasamiand many others. J. G. Vijayam, who had worked for manymovies of Modern Theatres, Salem, was the man behind thecamera while the film was edited by Vijayarangam who alsomade movies.

It was a family melodrama heavy on sentiments and ShivajiGanesan rose to great heights as usual, and his performanceas the hero was well supported by the multilingual starsactress G. Varalaskhmi. With a family theme, the movie lentitself to songs and there were more than nine of them. Oneparticular song, ‘Naan petra selvam, nalamaana selvam’became a super hit, sung off-screen by T. M. Soundararajanwho considered it as one of his best. Composed in the classicalraga, Jonpuri, not surprisingly, the song became a big hit. Thelyrics were by Ka. Mu. Sheriff, one of the leading lyricists ofTamil Cinema.

Jonpuri is a melodious raga and has been very popular notonly with movie composers, but also with Classical CarnaticMusic performers like the legends Semmangudi SrinivasaIyer, Madurai Mani Iyer, G. N. Balasubramaniam, M.S.Subbulakshmi, N.C.Vasanthakokilam, (sadly neglected today,)M.L.Vasanthakumari and several others. The most popularsong in this raga is ‘Aasai mugham marandhu poachey, idhaiyaaridam solvenadi thozhee’. This popular song was written byMahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar and practically everymusician worth his name has sung this song in his sabhaconcerts.

Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer sang the song at high speedknown in Classical Carnatic Music as ‘rendaam kaalam’ whichis faster than the ‘mudhal kaalam’, which is slow-paced.According to tradition, there are only three kaalams dependingon the speed. A legendary musician of the past centuriesShatkaala Govinda Maarar was believed to have sung in sixkaalams! Hence the prefix to his name! Sadly there were norecordings in that era of his singing. How human bodies canperform at such high speed without becoming incoherent isdifficult to imagine by us mere poor mortals!

Another song that became popular was ‘Vaazhndalumyesum, thaazhndhalum yesum’. It was also picturised onSivaji Ganesan. Both the above songs in the movie wererendered by the maestro of movie music T. M. Soundararajan, who perhaps sang the most number of songs off the screen inthe history of Tamil Cinema.

Other movies of 1957 for which music was composed byRamanathan include ‘Aaravalli’, ‘Manamagan Thevai’,‘Chakravarthi Thirumagal’, ‘Rani Lalithangi’, ‘PuthumaiPitthan’, ‘Vanangaamudi’, ‘Puthu Vazhvu’, ‘Sarangadhara’,‘Kaathavarayan’, ‘Uthama Puthiran’ and ‘Veera PandyaKattabomman’, an excellent collection of movies in a singleyear. Many songs in them became hits.

‘Aaravalli’, made in 1957, has already been discussed in theearlier chapter in full. Many of the comedy songs in the moviebecame popular and are heard by people to this day.

The next film of 1957 for Ramanathan was ‘Ambikapathi’,a remake of the 1937 super hit movie of M. K. ThyagarajaBhagavathar, a folk myth tale about a Chola King, his

daughter Amaravathi, her love for the poet Ambikapathi, the son of the legendary poet Kamban who wrote the Tamilversion of Ramayana.

LETTERS TO THEEDITOR

Sir, - The signpost indicating the name ofRangan Street installed by the Chennai Cor-poration at the eastern end of the streetmysteriously travelled a distance of a fewyards a couple of days back. Erected origi-nally close to a telephone booth, it has nowbeen relocated close to a residential complexon the street.

Puzzled at the mysterious movement of thenameboard, residents, suspecting that it couldbe the handiwork of vendors/hawkers, checkedwith them. They too were equally surprisedat the sudden over-night happening and toldus that they had had no hand in the ‘opera-tion’.

We immediately contacted the AE of Ward136. He also stated that the Corporation hadnot moved the sign. Then, who did it? Whowill resolve the puzzle? Will the civic bodyhelp us find an answer? – T. Nagar Resi-dents’ Welfare Association, RanganStreet, T. Nagar

Unresolved mystery

Smoking in tea stallsSir, - I wish to bring to your notice the

smoking menace in West Mambalam particu-larly in tea stalls which one has to go tofrequently. No smoking sign is painted butpeople smoke right under it and not outside.Tea stall owners are not at all bothered.

Central and State governments have madelaws to prevent smoking in public places butto no avail. Enforcing authorities do not takeany concrete action. Even Chennai Corpora-tion harps on the slogan “Smoke-free Chennai”but without any results.

Inspections by health officials and fining oftea stall owners is not evident.

The only option is to ban the selling ofcigarettes and tobacco products near tea stalls.-S. Thiruvengadatham, Lake View Road,West Mambalam
