Warm greetings from UNA-Canada,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Fall Edition of the M&M newsletter. This edition will provide a recap of our summer activities and provide a glimpse of what is to come. We began the summer with the M&M internship programme, placing nineteen interns with a broad range of media skills and cultural experiences at national and community media outlets. The host organizations provided excellent feedback and were particularly impressed with the dedication, passion and work ethic of each of the interns. Interns used the M&M website, facebook and social media to showcase their media pieces, while building a strong support network (www.mmunac.org/blog). Interns will engage with their communities as UNA-Canada Youth Ambassadors, sharing their experiences and encouraging youth across Canada to value personal and individual experience as an integral component of cultural inclusivity in Canada.

In Halifax we concluded our Do-it-Do contest (in partnership with FusionHalifax), witnessing creative visions of diversity through the eyes of 78 youth. The event engaged almost 2000 Haligonians, through facebook and flicker participation. Winning entries are displayed at venues across Halifax.

The Fall 2012 schedule includes a number of exciting projects; an Alberta wide photo contest, a nine-week youth “Photo-voice” workshop in Toronto, an eight-week film workshop series in Vancouver and much more. The United Nations Association in Canada’s (UNA-Canada) M&M Internship Programme welcomed the M&M Intern class of 2012 to Edmonton, for a two-day debriefing session at the St. Johns Institute. The Debriefing concluded their six-week internships with mainstream and community media outlets across Canada. This second round of interns gathered to share their experiences and hear from professionals in the field who offered valuable career tips to build employability and diversity in Canadian media.

The first day focused on knowledge sharing, as interns presented their experiences to their peers. These presentations included photos, slideshows and stories from the field. The discussions following the presentations, allowed interns to gain a deeper understanding of how to apply the lessons learned and build on their successes. M&M Regional Coordinators provided a step by step guide to the interns on the ‘menternship’ component of their internships - during which, each intern will address 50 high school aged youth in their communities to encourage youth from diverse backgrounds to consider a career in the media and/or communications. Looking at the future of media, Vassy Kapelos (provincial affairs reporter for Global Edmonton), and Ryan Jespersen, (co-host of CityTV’s Breakfast Television) shared practical advice with the interns on obtaining a career in media, including breaking into the field and working their way up.

The second day, interns welcomed career consultant Doreen Kooy. Doreen’s session provided interns with the skills to develop polished and professional resume and cover letters that specifically targets media outlets. Interns discussed building and managing an online portfolio with M&M Internship manager, Lara Hill, and the various social media networks that can be utilized in journalism. Following their discussion, the interns enjoyed an informal graduation ceremony complete their summer with the M+M internship programme.

By Neil LeGrandeur, M&M Edmonton Regional Coordinator

As a Regional Coordinator (RC) for the UNAC M&M Initiative, I found the Internship Debriefing to be an integral part of the process of growth for the interns, as well as for my role as an RC. When we first met in Ottawa back in May 2012 it was just a group of cautious interns and RC’s. We all wanted to make an impression on each other, and I am sure we all had fears and questions about what lied ahead for us over the next few days. However, as the briefing pushed forward I got to see personality and passion emerge from both RC’s and interns as we began to forge connection with each other through our collective initiatives towards media.

Following the 6 week internship placement, the M&M team arrived to the Debriefing here in Edmonton (August 9-10th at the St. Johns Institute). It was no longer cautious interns and RC’s, but a connected group of young professionals; well-seasoned in workplace experiences and eager to share their accomplishments. The initial trepidation of the group was replaced by a radiating sense of confidence and success.

As an RC, having the opportunity to lead a workshop and discussion with the interns about the youth engagement segment (and final phase) of their internship brought things full circle for me. Together we created a dialogue about the importance of taking what we have all learned together and sharing it with the next generation of youth in Canada. The Debriefing was essential in the communication and execution of this initiative and continuing the process of each interns’ professional development. I believe that it is through this effort that lasting change can be made, and the voice of cultural diversity in media can be elevated to the necessary level of equality for all.

“Having an intern has been

invaluable... I have had many

interns in the past but it

would have been difficult to

“The most valuable feature

Shantal was responsible for some camera work and assisting on location for shoots, as well as some research for various episodes. Shantal's exciting first week at ET Canada, Toronto unfolded with much enthusiasm and a dose of courage, which resulted in cherishing an unforgettable experience. Way to go, Shantal!:

"The news broke that morning that Ryan Gosling was in St. Catherine’s for his mother’s graduation. I immediately began some research on the story just to find information on the event. I happened to stumble upon a photo of Gosling with his girlfriend Eva Mendez. Minutes after finding the photo I overheard one producer-Jesse Berkley- asked someone over the phone to get a better picture. Being my first week, it took me a few seconds to build the nerve but I approached him and asked if he had seen the photo I found. He did not and was happy with my find. Later on that evening the photo was featured on the show! This was small but profound victory for me."

Looking back and heading forward...

The United Nations Association in Canada’s (UNA-Canada) Multimedia and Multiculturalism (M&M) Initiative, working in partnership with Multicultural Youth Action (MYA) from The Canadian Red Cross and Hundred Million Pictures were proud to present the screening of “Make Yourself Aware”.

“Make Yourself Aware” is a MYA short film that explores racism and possible solutions. This youth led project was created out of an identified need to continue educating Calgarians about racism and what, as individuals, we can do to combat this issue.

An afternoon of important conversation and film was led by Calgary’s up and coming youth leaders.

“Of course, simply having met so many different people

has opened doors across the country for each of us. I

think the greatest benefit from the internship was

allowing us to sit in on a real newsroom. Not only did we

get to experience the news first hand but we met some

amazing people and, in that sense, the doors have also

opened for us to be able to work and continue to grow

within this environment.”

“M&M has most certainly assisted in

my career. Aside from instilling in me

a new-found confidence and direction,

I feel I made important connections

with individuals who are not only

exceedingly intelligent, creative, and

motivated but who share my vision as

well. “

New Roots Radio in partnership with the United Nations Association of Canada need your help! We are looking for contributors to interview people across Canada and around the world on the subjects of refugees, migrants and cultural diversity. The interviews will be broadcast on New Roots Radio (www.NewRootsRadio.com), a radio programme about immigration and multiculturalism based in Halifax, and through our partner the United Nations Association of Canada (www.mmunac.org).

Who you interview is up to you. It could be your grandmother who emigrated to Canada through Pier 21 in the port of Halifax. It could be a young musician in a refugee camp on the other side of the world. It could be your neighbour who can't get a visa for his family to come to Canada. It could be a politician on new changes to immigration law, or the migrant workers you see every day in the fields outside town. It doesn't have to be someone local to you. Cell phones and Skype reach pretty much any part of the world these days. And you don't have to know the person either. You might be surprised how willing even some very famous people would be to talk to you. The story might have a Canadian angle, but it doesn't have to. The only requirement is that you can contact the interview subject, either through Skype or in person, and that they have an interesting story to tell.

Here's the deal: send us a short email describing who you would like to interview, why, and what you would ask them. If the idea is intriguing enough, we'll give you a crash course in interviewing for radio, and walk you through the steps of producing a piece for transmission. You don't need journalism training, but you should be insatiably curious about other people's experiences and just gutsy enough to ask them about it. You should have access to a computer with internet and some kind of voice call programme like Skype, or a good quality portable audio recorder (get in touch with us if you're not sure your equipment is the right stuff.) In exchange, we'll give radio experience, national exposure for your work and a $35.00 stipend.

If the collaboration is successful, we'll offer higher rates for more in-depth pieces.

To send us your interview idea, or for more information about this project, write to [email protected].

UNA-Canada in partnership with Fusion Halifax

organized a Diversity Photo Contest, "Express Yourself-

Do it, Do!" The youth were encouraged to explore the

meaning of diversity in Halifax and think outside the box through a snapshot.

Submissions from 78 enthusiastic youth compounded with over 2000 Haligonians engaging in the contest through social media such as Flicker and Facebook, made the Do-it-Do photo contest an immense success. The overwhelming support from the youth and the public was a true testimony of the growing need in Halifax and the desire to showcase diversity through fun, engaging and creative means of expression. The photo contest also served as an alternative medium where community members, especially those who are from under-represented communities, were invited to express their views and communicate their ideas as to what diversity means to them in order to build a healthy and inclusive Canadian society.

To keep the fun rolling, the photo with the most “Facebook-likes” at the end of the contest was crowned as Social Media Darling! The photos are now rotating at different venues around the city and soon will be packaged into a 2013 Calendar. Since this photo contest was a success this year, there is much anticipation in repeating it in coming years.

4 Ways News Organizations are Using Twitter Lists

HOW TO: Use Twitter Lists

"To build any sort of mass-media strategy, the motivators of the outlets must be understood. Of course, it is often more nuanced than this, but mass-media outlets generally care about stories with broad appeal, with human interest elements, which are somehow tied to the economy, health, education and popular culture, since headlines in those areas draw eyeballs" - The Globe and Mail Learn More

The United Nations Association of Canada (UNA-Canada)’s M&M Programme in partnership with The Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC)’s Youth Safety Ambassadors Programme (YSAP), the Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN), the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and Toronto Crisis Response Team to provide an interactive programme in a safe space for youth at risk by initiating a diversity and education workshop series entitled; “Through My Eyes”. The project will consist of a series of workshops in which youth will express their ideas on each topic through photography. The workshops will be facilitated by various people representing different organizations, and the youth will be trained by a professional photographer who is volunteering his time. The project will end with a graduation and a public exhibition of the youth’s work for citizens of Toronto to enjoy and admire.

Through this programme at risk Toronto youth will have the opportunity to build strategies that promote community safety and justice advocacy, but most importantly this project is an outlet for targeted and marginalized youth to showcase their ideas and creativity through photography in a safe space. It will enable them to create long lasting relationships with mentors, develop confidence, and assist them in becoming active community members and leaders by teaching others the qualities and skills they learn.
