What's New 1 9 9 4 T u r k e y O p e n : - report by Sherwood Moore -

Although the Turkey Open was only half the size of last year's tournament. It had plenty of fireworks. Greg Nowak won the $100 F i r s t Prize. Mike J e n s e n took second, to win $50 . Romie Carpenter finished third, winning $25 . BUI McBroom had a great tournament, finisliing fourth and wimiing $2 5 for Best Under 1900.

Dave Shughfirt, A rman Goplen and Ron Er i ckson each won S5 by dividing equally the Best Under 1900 2nd Prize. J o h n R a y b u m . Robert Raja la and C a r l Jacobs each won 311 .67 by dividing the prize pool for 1st and 2nd Under 1700 and 1st Under 1500 ($15. $10 & $10). Emmet Goforth and Lyle Petersen each took home $2.50. shar ing the 2nd Under 1500 Prize ($5).

A rman Goplen won the plaque for Biggest Upset when he let Greg Nowak off with a draw In the first round. Due to lack of time on both sides, the score sheets are incomplete. A n n a n and Greg both queened pawns on their 6 l 8 t move. A rman checked Greg with his rook on his 63 rd move. Greg lost his queen to the rook. However, with both flags iianging, Arman accepted Greg's draw offer.

In the second round. Dan McCourt stood toe-to-toe with Paul Motta. Dan wasn't able to play Sunday, but he was in good form Saturday.

With time controls of G/2 , I was expecting someone to c la im "Insufficient Losing C l i ances . " As it turned out, no one raised the i ssue , although two of the time forfeits would have been Justified c la ims. In the third round. Dave Shugtiart was iooldng for a ruling on "Insufficient Prawjqg C l i ances " against Paul Motta. 1 told h i m I had tried to c la im "Insufficient Winning Chances " before, but 1 couUn't find it listed either.

Thanks to Thad Suits for stopping in and being Houseman. Also Thanks to B i l l McBroom, Romie Carpenter and Mike Jensen for the help in cleaning up.

B i l l i n g s I n v i t a t i o n a l : Action Chess was the great attractor for eight eastern Montana players who got together at the spur of the moment for a one-day round robin at Zygmond Mayer's house. Zygmond, having home-court advantage, deviated from his usucd modus operandi and played what many would refer to as normal or solid chess, i.e. the Goring and Dan ish Gambits. Zygmond scored 7.5 out of 8, winning the first prize of $20 . Jo l in C . Thompson followed close l>eiUnd with 7 points, winning $5 . Er ie l Mayer scored draws with Long and Brennan. picking up more rating points. When Eriel 's rating gets up where it belongs. It won't hurt so much to lose or draw with h im (I. for one. a m doing a l l I c an to h e ^ his rating cl imb - ed.}I

M a t c h e s , e t c . : There are several ways to play rated chess when there isn't anything officially going on. Any two rated players can decide to play a onc-on-one match, any time and anywhere. They c an decide how many games to play, what time controls to u se ( for lu l l K, Q/30 is the fastest time control allowable) and how often to play the games. The only restrictions eire that their rating differential cannot be greater than 400 points and the report (to U S C F ) must be validated by a certffied tournament director OT by a notarized statement signed by both players. Mike J e n s e n and Pau l Motta recently played a match and David Duke and Zygmond Mayer are currently engaged in a match . Les B r ennan and Kip U m e s a n d have played several matches. These aren't usual ly highly publicized doings, but they should serve to demonstrate that anyljody c an play rated chess whenever they want to. Do you have someone who lives nearby who may be willing to engage one-on-one. vls-a-vis, tete-a-tete for the match of al l time, the clash of the titans, the chemipionship of the universe? It could be j u s t a phone cal l away! What's the worst that c an happen? 50 points max imum can chemge hands from any Individual match. This is true whether there were four or a h imdred games played. So, If you agree to a hundred game match and lose al l 100 games, you will probably lose 50 points and your opponent wiU gain 50 points. Empir ical ly , though, four or s ix games are al l that are necessary. Players c an gain or lose up to 50 points f^ycj\ match is played, limited by this: no player may go up or down more than one rating c lass within a three year period solefy through match play. Go ahead, arrange a rated match. They are fun and you play better chess when there are time limits and rating points on the Une. Oh. and send in some of the good games!

By extension, any club-level T D c an direct any tournament, anywhere, anytime, advertised or not. Just as long a s there are fewer them 50 players. With Just a few more phone cal ls , a smal l tournament, quad, round robin, or Swiss can be Euranged for the following weekend. You don't have to l>e a T D to organize a tournament. You merely have to be one to direct it.

So. don't sit around waiting for someone else to dictate your chess acUvlty. Pul l your own strings euid make your Ideas come alive 1 Make some phone cal ls and get something going. Fll be waiting by the phone! - ed.

B l i z z a r d Q u a d : Zygmond Mayer and David Duke (who a r e c u r r e n t l y engaged in a six-game match) made some phone cal ls and arranged a four -man quad. Once they saw how easy that was, they t h o u a i t they might even do the same on a monthly bas is . This event was held In Mayer's house (only two tables were needed) and lunch was even served to Uie guests (Italian cuisine).

Zygmond was the highest rated player and . true-to-form. came in first place, but not perfectly. David Duke got a draw with Zygmond in a game that ended with some difficult tactical problems a nd not m u c h time to analyze them. Look for a win for either side in this game. There could be one. but it was unclear at the time.

Y u l c t i d e O p e n : The Bozeman event attracted 16 players and provided some interesting games. One sal ient feature of this tournament was a controverBlai Invocation of the " insufficient losing C h a n c e s " rule, which resulted in a fair amount of on-the-spot rule book perusa l . The T D was called upon to make some difficult Judgments. TE>s or Emyone who might ever want to take advantage of the protection this rule provides should learn all they c an Etbout it now.

At this point (diagram) Romie (White), having w 3 minutes left on the clock, invoked The protective umbrella of the " Insu f f i c i en t l o s ing chances " rule here, and after some deliberation wi th the expert level players in attendance, the decision was made to observe the progress of the game a while longer so as to see if White could make progress in the direction of a win.

It was important to determine if Whi te wou ld s imply use a s ta tegy o f e m p l o y i n g d i l a t o r y t a c t i c s intending t o run B lack ' s cloci< out.

This was the thrust of Romie's claim - to require Black to demonstrate progress. Turns out the board was reduced to a clear draw.

oesn't Kip Limesand remind you of Paul Morphy? It's not the way he looks. He doesn't play with h is

ig^ back to the board. He doesn't have the same ar i s tocrat ic contempt for h i s opponents . He doesn't have the same tubercular cough. Maybe it 's the bril l iant moves that come UteraUy spewing out of his finger-tips. They don't literally spew all the time. They don't L . S . most of the time. Some of the time?
