Metro rides in city second mostexpensive in country

Metro rail passengers in Chennai pay between Rs. 5 and Rs.30 more for travelling distances in excess of 8 km. than thoseusing metro rail services in any other city in the country withthe exception of Mumbai..

While CMRL has capped the maximum fare at Rs. 70, metrorail fares in cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kochi and Delhihave a maximum price of Rs. 40 to 60.

A 11 km. line in Mumbai operated by Metro One OperationPrivate Limited, a joint venture between two France-basedtransport operators and Reliance Infrastructure, is the cost-liest in the country, charging commuters a maximum fare ofRs. 110 for a single journey.

For a ride from Nehru Park to the airport covering a distanceof about 21 km., commuters have to spend Rs. 60. Travellingthe same distance would save commuters between Rs.10 and30 on other metro rails like those in Hyderabad, Bangalore,Kochi and Delhi. A 14-km. metro train ride from Koyambeduto the airport, which costs Rs. 50, is more expensive by Rs. 5to 20 over the same distance on other metro services.

Metro rail officials said that the board of directors of CMRLdecided on the fares, which could be maintained for the comingyears even when the network expands.

“The fares were decided based on affordability, becausehiking fares once the service is thrown open to the public is adifficult process and commuters will not welcome the move,”an official said.

A retired railway official said that while the high fare may notbring any profit for the service providers, the metro rail servicein the city has spent more on construction, as most of the lineruns underground.

Officials said that it costs around Rs. 650 crores to build 1 km.of underground metro rail line and about Rs. 250 crores for thesame distance on an elevated corridor. A total of 24 km. of the45 km. phase-1 project is underground. “Maintenance of thesestretches is also expensive.

If we have to fix fares based on construction and mainte-nance cost, then a ticket would cost Rs. 500,” the official said.

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 80‘Calcutta’ N. Viswanathan, a college professor and theater

figure, enjoyed a brief but bright innings in Tamil Cinema ascharacter actor and his performance in every film was of ofsuch high standard as is rarely seen in Tamil Cinema. Sadly,he was not used properly by the Tamil film world and he wentback to Calcutta. His son Ashok Viswanathan is makingwaves as a bright filmmaker.

Even though “Antha Naal” won a Delhi Award it was not abox-office success. The Tamil moviegoer was not yet ready toaccept that kind of a song-less dance-less film, which cameahead of its time. Frequently screened on television today, thefilm is now treated as a classic of Tamil Cinema.

(The successful and popular Tamil filmmaker ‘Muktha’Srinivasan worked in this film as assistant director and he wascredited in the titles as V. (for Venkatachari!) Srinivasan.)

Soon Balachander turned producer promoting his owncompany’SB Creations’, a novel name for a movie company atthat time. Under this banner he produced three memorablemovies ‘’Avana Ivan?’’ (1962), ‘’Bommai”(1964)and ‘’NaduIravil’’ (1970). All these films were inspired by Hollywoodmovies but suitably adapted by Balachander who wrote, directed and produced them besides composing the music. Healso played the lead roles (except in “Bommai”) with muchimpact.

“Avana Ivan?” was inspired by the Hollywood classic madeby the celebrated filmmaker George Stevens’’ A Place In TheSun’’ (1951) which was based on the American classic novel byTheodore Dreiser,’An American Tragedy’ which in turn wasbased on a sensational American murder case. Balachanderblazed a new trail by bringing out a gramophone record of thetitle music in the movie which became popular and sold well.Even today such records of title music are rarely done.

‘’Bommai’’ was a rehash of an Alfred Hitchcock movie.Thefamed musician and cult figure K. J. Yesudas took his bow inTamil Cinema as playback singer in this film with the song‘’Neeyum Bommai, Naanum Bommai” which became quitepopular. Another song by L. R. Eswari, “ThatthiThatthi”alsobecame a hit. In this film Balachander introduced anothernovelty by showing the technicians on screen, which hadearlier been done by N. S. Krishnan in his hit”Mana Magal’’.That was not all. Balachander had the artistes sell tickets atthe box-office window in a Madras cinema! A first of its kindin cinema! “Nadu Iravil’’ was a rehash of the Hollywood hit’’AndThen There Were None’’ (1945) which was an adaptation of themost popular novel of the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie‘Ten Little Niggers’. For obvious reasons this novel was called‘Ten Little Indians’ in the United States. Interestingly thisclassic novel has been repeatedly filmed both for the big andsmall screen from time to time. But the 1945 version made bythe famed French filmmaker Rene Clair tops the list and thrillsviewers to this day even after repeated viewing.

After a hectic innings in cinema as actor, writer, director, music composer and producer Balachander gave up films, much to the regret of many and went back to the world ofClassical Carnatic Music where he became a legend in his ownlifetime as a Veena maestro.

A good friend of this writer and a source of encouragement, the two worked for sometime on a thriller film project during thelate 1980s. But sadly it did not take off mainly due toBalachander’ s obsessive involvement in the world of music!

He created history of his own in Tamil Cinema and his exitis definitely an irreparable loss to the world of movies.

He passed away suddenly in 1990 when he was on a concerttour of northern India. The man may be gone but his moviesshall live forever and be cherished by his innumerable fans andadmirers. (To be continued)

LETTERS TO THE EDITORJunction converted into garbage

dump?

Sir, The junction on one side of Arcot Streetand Krishna Street, T. Nagar has been con-verted into a garbage dump. Heaps of house-hold garbage and food waste are dumped rightunder the street name board. The apartmentcomplex that I live in is close to this spot andthe foul smell from the rotting waste is affect-ing the residents. It is also a health hazard anda breeding ground for mosquitoes.

We so easily complain about the inefficiencyof Chennai Corporation when we ourselves areresponsible for lapses in our civic duties. It is apathetic situation happening daily in the streetthat also houses MGR Ninavu Illam close by.

I appeal to Corporation officials to view thefootage of the security camera installed in thestreet corner and take action against thosewho are dumping the garbage. SabarethinamMuthiah, Vasanth Apartments, KrishnaStreet, T. Nagar

Senior citizens’ denied discounton tickets bought with reward points

Sir, SBI IRCTC credit card has some goodfeatures and privileges. But encashing of thereward points is a little cumbersome procedureto understand and requires guidance from theSBI/Railway authorities. But I recently noticeda shocking feature while buying train ticketswith reward points.Senior citizens’ discountcannot be availed of while buying tickets withreward points. It appears to be a strangeexclusion. This fact was never explained whenI applied for the card.

Apart from depriving senior citizens of theirrightful entitlement, this also seems to beunconstitutional.

May I request the authorities concerned tochange this system and allow senior citizens touse the reward points with concessionspermitted by the Government? V. R. Sridhar,Swathi Kanaka Flats, 23/11, VeerasamiStreet, West Mambalam, Ph: 98845 68963

I enjoy Randor Guy andJ. S. Raghavan columns

Sir, Kindly convey my appreciation to RandorGuy for his deep knowledge of films of yester-years and for writing in a very interesting way.

In his column in the Mambalam Times (Dec.3-9 issue), while writing about director S.Balachander, he has also mentioned a songcalled ‘Baby, it’s cold outside’ sung by RedSkeleton in the film ‘Neptune’s Dau-ghter’ released in 1949. I saw the film severaltimes in Midland Theatre just to enjoy thatsong. The same song was sung by Frank Sinatraearlier in a separate album. And I rememberthat the same song was sung by Gene Kelly (orwas it Sinatra?) in the film ‘Take me out to theBall Game’ starring Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra,Jules Munshin and Esther Williams.

I equally enjoy reading J. S. Raghavan’scolumn in your paper and special appreciationfor his interesting stories every week.

I wish both of them my very best and hopethat they continue to write their columns inMambalam Times and keep enthralling fanslike me. Sankaranarayanan, K. K. Nagar

Cycle track misused for parkingvehicles

Sir, This letter is with reference to the dedi-cated cycle track developed by the ChennaiCorporation in K. K. Nagar at a cost of aroundRs. 3 crores.

When the scheme was announced, therewere reservations that it could lead to trafficcongestion in the area which has now becomesa reality. Though the track has been thrownopen, there are several issues that need to beaddressed.

The track provides safety for cyclists, espe-cially the numerous school students who use itdaily to avoid riding in the traffic- ridden road. Asthe track is misused for parking vehicles, cy-clists are forced to ride on the road, defeating thevery purpose of developing the track.

Also, due to elevation of the road after devel-oping the cycle track, there is water logging onthe inner streets during heavy rains.

I hope with so much money invested in devel-oping the track, the authorities concerned takeimmediate steps to maintain it and ensure thatthe track is not misused for parking vehicles. S.Muralidharan, K. K. Nagar

CUG for TTEs is welcome moveby Railways

Sir, The Railway Board, in a recent circular, stated that it will provide closed usergroup (CUG) mobile connections for Travel-ling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) so that passen-gers can contact them in case of an emergencyor any untoward incident. The circular furtheremphasized that TTEs are the frontline staff, and are the first available staff of the Rail-ways. TTEs are supposed to provide first aid tosick passengers, and remain vigilant to dealwith security related issues.

Given the problems that passengers have toface on certain occasions, the decision of theRailways is most welcome. Whilst on the above,I wish to recall the ordeal of a friend whiletraveling in an A/c coach to Trichy recently. The air-conditioning failed and as windows can-not be opened in such bogies, the passengers, especially the elderly, had to put up with thetorrid situation of poor air circulation. The TTEcould not remedy the situation.

When my friend called me up, I told him topull the chain when it reached the next stationso that the authorities there could provide thenecessary relief. I rang up several Railwayhelpline numbers and the relief came afteralmost 4 hours of arduous journey for thepassengers.

While such situations can occur in spite ofproper maintenance and checking of param-eters before a train departs, it is for the TTE,who is the points-man for passengers, to takethe call and arrange for relief.

In this regard, the decision of the Railways toprovide CUG connection will be of immensehelp to passengers in case of distress.

Railways should paint these numbers insideeach compartment for the awareness of pas-sengers. V. S. Jayaraman, Motilal Street, T.Nagar

No use sending SMS minutes beforepower outage

Sir, I received an SMS from TANGEDCO at00.36 hrs on Dec. 8 stating that there will beoutage of power in my area from 00.38 hrs to01.38 hrs due to a possible failure to the feederline. I noticed the message only at 6 a.m bywhich time power had gone and come back.

Of late, TANGEDCO has been sending SMSto consumers informing about the possiblepower outage in advance so that they areaware of the same and take necessary steps.

While this is a welcome step, in the instantcase, the message was sent only a few minutesbefore the outage in anticipation of a failure inthe system. While TANGEDCO cautions theconsumers in advance in respect of plannedpower shutdown for maintenance or other suchwork, one wonders, how they are able to predictfeeder failure? Many a time, power supply getsinterrupted due to tripping or any other suddenoccurrences for which no advance informationcan be sent.

If the Electricity Department has procuredadvanced gadgets which can detect feeder orany such failures in advance, this is somethingfantastic. If that is so, why not it send outmessages in advance like it does when it takesup maintenance work and not a few secondsbefore the happening so that the consumerscan plan their work accordingly? V. S.Jayaraman, Motolal Street, T. Nagar

Appeal to resume supply of TuvarDal in ration shops

Sir, While the supply of Urud Dal (Blackgram) has been stopped by Civil Supply Dept.,the supply of Tuvar Dal (split Red Gram) hasalso been suspended. Instead, only Masoor Dal(Red Lentil) is being supplied which aggra-vates gastric problems. In spite of repeatedappeals to R. Kamaraj (Minister for Food andCivil Supplies) through letters/media, the sup-ply of Tuvar Dal has not been restored.

The sugar supplied of late is poor in qualityand the moisture content is high leading toconsiderable weight loss for the consumers. Itseems that the food items were not stored inrain safe conditions in the godowns. Smartcard issue is also getting unduly delayed. N.Vijayaraghavan, 18th Avenue, AshokNagar, Ph: 99626 6476.
