THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT THE RAIN By: Fr. O’Dell Well, this past week we certainly have seen our share of rain. Sometimes it felt like God turned on the water faucet and forgot to shut it off. In the last few days, we’ve seen more rain than some years have seen all summer long. It has brought much needed moisture, but it has also brought water in basements and flooding streams. Like many things in life, we both celebrate and bemoan the rain. We like the fact that our lawns are no longer stressed – that they are a rich green color. On the other hand, we hate the accumulation of mud everywhere we turn. We like it that our gardens have plenty of water and that our flowers are growing quickly. Conversely, we hate the fact that the standing water causes tons of mosquitos to grow and dart about as well. We love it when a nice shower cools the weather off. Then again, when the sun comes back out we hate the humidity in the air. Bottom line, we complain when we don’t have enough rain – and then again, complain when we have too much. It makes me wonder if we are ever satisfied with what we get? In the midst of our complaining, we forget to count our blessings. We forget for example, that some parts of the world have monsoon rains each and every afternoon which make our rains look weak in comparison. We forget that some cities in our own nation only see 42% of the days each year with the sun out. Here in South Dakota we see more than 62% of the days each year with sun. Sioux Falls has an average rainfall of about 26 inches, but in the rain forest of Africa, the average rainfall is 108 inches. The Air Quality Index in the biggest cities of South Dakota stands at 10 (very good) compared with 162 (very poor) in New Delhi, India. Rain helps wash away the pollutants from our air. In other words, our complaints are relative. Even though we may feel that we got pounded by rain this past week, that a lot of basements got flooded, that some crops got washed away – the rain that fell here was nothing compared with some places in the world. We forget to acknowledge the gifts God gives us in the rain - because we are too busy complaining about whether we got too much or too little. This lack of gratitude, this complaining spirit - is reflected in us, not only in the way that we feel about the amount of rain we got, but it is also reflected in how we see and understand the gift of our faith. When was the last time that we thanked God for all of the graces He showers out upon us that help us avoid sin. Perhaps we are too busy bemoaning the fact that God didn’t give us more. When was the last time that we thanked God for the gift of the Mass and the Holy Eucharist. Perhaps we forget that some places in the world only have Mass celebrated four or five times a year and that the people long to have the Holy Eucharist on a more frequent basis. When was the last time that we thanked God for the ability to practice our faith freely and openly in the USA – whereas in many places in the world that freedom is denied people. When we are complaining about what we don’t have, we fail to remember to thank God for all that we have been given. In the Bible, the Greek word for complaining means someone who grumbles, someone who is discontent with his or her lot in life. Within the Scripture, there are 22 instances of complaining and in each and every case, the outcome of the complaint is never good or beneficial. Remember, when the people were marching through the desert on the way to the Promised Land. They complained to God that they were tired of the manna that He had provided them to eat. They wanted meat. The Lord rained down quail upon them until they were so sick of it, that they could hardly stand it. The complaint backfired on them. Galatians teaches us that complaining is not a fruit of the Holy Spirit – in fact, if anything it is detrimental to the serenity that the Holy Spirit wishes us to possess. For the Christian – complaining about what we do or don’t have compromises our ability to witness to the world around us, with the joy, the gratitude and the peace that we should have in God and our relationship with Him. Clearly God challenges us not to grumble or complain because complaining leads to envy of heart and strife among those who travel the world with us. Take a lesson then from the rain. When we complain about the things around us, we fail to thank God for the Providence that He always shows us. When we complain

about the way things are going in our lives we deprive ourselves of the serenity that God wishes for us. When we complain about the amount of “rainy weather” that comes our

way, we fail to be the joy filled, peace filled and enthusiastic witnesses that we are called to be to others, about our faith in and love for the Lord.
