Samples and Prep

• Three samples using Hysol 9396• Seven samples using Hysol 9394• Surface prep tubes

– Sandpaper(600) with alcohol– Wash with alcohol– Wash with acetone

• Surface prep fitting– Brass wire brush with alcohol– Wash with alcohol– Wash with acetone

• Irradiate to about 25 MRad• He leak -> P to 15.5 bar -> He leak -> irradiate -> P to 15.5 bar

-> He leak. Vacuum inside part.

Samples After Irradiation• Note that epoxy turns blue-like color. No evidence of epoxy running.

Before/After Comparison

• Small weight gain.

• Note that did not try to control electrical contact between fittings and pipe. Resistance after. Did not measure before.

• Change in leak rate not significant. Small change from setup on different days. Fine after about 100 thermal cycles.

• Next step is high pressure He test. Making setup.

First Conclusion

• Promising but need more testing.• Simple mechanical test completed(9394B) by constraining tube

and applying torque to fitting. Tube deformed first, glue joint did not break. Stopped and leak checked OK.

• In process of setting up shear tests that will compare irradiated to non-irradiated. And 9394 to 9396.

• Need more tests in C3F8 not irradiated and irradiated to understand penetration into epoxy. Bulk epoxy samples.

• Assuming all is OK, better control of glue application and assembly. These samples were done in a hurry.

• Need to understand importance of guaranteed electrical contact. Believe can make contact (by tube contact with fitting at end), which could be checked during assembly. Long term?

Capillaries

• Six samples made with Hysol 9394

• All pass He leak -> P to 20 bar -> He leak, Vacuum in part.

• Setting up to irradiate 4 in C3F8. Will keep other two at 20 bar in the meantime.
