Posing as civic workers, police nab ganja peddlersA police team masquerading as Chennai Corporation staff on fogging operations arrested two persons, including Moorthy

(a resident of West Mambalam), for peddling ganja near Marina Beach area on Oct. 25.The police had received a tip that ganja was being peddled in areas like Triplicane, Marina and Ice House.Sources revealed the involvement of a gang that supplied the contraband to several junior artistes in the cine industry.

Following this, police found one Moorthy alias ‘Ganja’ Moorthy, a junior movie artiste, actively involved in the operation.A police team headed by Marina inspector G. Harikumar managed to locate Moorthy going on a bike on the afternoon

of Oct. 25. Realizing that he was being trailed, Moorthy abandoned his bike in Sivarajapuram and escaped.After almost three hours, when no one came to claim the bike, police decided to change tact. They posed as fogging staff

from the Corporation and started calling out the owner of the bike to remove it. When Moorthy came with his accompliceto remove the vehicle, police caught both of them.

Moorthy told the police that he sourced the contraband from suppliers in Sivarajapuram. He had rented a house in WestMambalam for Rs. 3,000 where he packaged the ganja. Police raided the house and seized 5 kg of ganja.

Suresh (a resident ofKamaraj Colony, T. Nagar)found a 5-foot long snake inhis house at around 10 a.m onOct. 26.

Sir, A big surprise awaits those who regularly pass through the crowdedRailway Border Road and Ranganathan Street (T. Nagar). Yes, these roadshave been cleared of the decades-long encroachment both by the vendors/hawkers and also the complex owners. To some extent, the encroachmentshave also been cleared on the services lanes of Usman Road. With theencroachments gone, one can really appreciate the width of these roads. Duraisamy subway full of potholesSir, I am a handicapped person living in West Mambalam for over five

decades. I drive a converted 2-wheeler and have to cross DuraisamySubway to reach my workplace. The subway has been in a bad conditionfor a number of years. The road is full of potholes and it gets worse duringrains. The subway walls have developed several cracks from which waterleaks during monsoon thereby flooding the subway. Corporation recentlyre-laid the service lanes but ignored the subway road. I appeal to theauthorities to mill the surface and re-lay the subway road.—S.R.
