In this talk

• Preparation of mass construction (including DOM and DU integration)

• DU-2

• Procurement of components

• Documents for STAC

• Review of the project

M. Circella, Technical and Planning issues, KM3NeT SC meeting, 29 July 2015 2

Preparation of mass construction

PMTs: 15,000 available – 7,500 being equipped (base installed, coating, test) in Naples – 7,500 shipped to Erlangen (test scenario to be defined)

DOM/DU integration sites:

4 DOM integration sites (Catania, Naples, Erlangen, Nikhef) preparing to mass production – target speed is 3-5 DOMs/week/site – each site committed to 120 DOMs

Strasbourg expected to join DOM integration later (people available, applying for funds)

3 DU integration sites in preparation: Nikhef, LNS and Naples

3 deployment preparation sites in preparation: CPPM, LNS and Naples

Important points:

Request for funds for 6 LOMs and 4 acoustic release frames ongoing in Italy (in order to sustain installation of batches of DUs)

Transportation (of components, DOMs and DUs) to be organized by all involved institutes until this is centrally supported (Common Fund)

DU-2 (general remarks)

3

Infrastructure in KM3NeT-It ready for connection (new CTF and JB installed)

PPM-DU left disconnected at end of operation (additional motivation to go for deployment of DU-1&2!)

Integration plan defined• DOMs built in Nikhef, Naples, Catania• Base module built in Bari• Integration of DOMs to VEOC started at Nikhef, completed in Naples• Integration of base module to VEOC and all following actions (tests, arrangement on LOM,

etc.) to be done in Naples

Schedule slipping (see later): first 3 DOMs mounted with VEOC, the rest awaiting for VEOC upgrade

Aiming for a deployment in fall (from second half of October until mid-November)

Review to be launched in early September

From now on: alternate-weekly meeting on DU-1 and DU-2 (next one will be on August 5)

DU-integration mailing list set up (I will distribute instructions for subscription soon after this meeting)

Preparation of DU-2

4

Availability of components:• DOMs – full set in production at NIKHEF + 3 to be built in Catania + 3 in Naples (progressing well, see Daan’s

report)• VEOC – available but needs modification to BEOC (see Edward’s report)• buoy - ordered• mechanical parts for buoy – to be produced• ropes and mechanical parts for DU – can be procured quickly• anchor – available, under finalization • base container – in preparation (in aluminum!) – see next slide• equipment for base container – available (except BCI, which has been ordered)

Availability of deployment tools:• LOM and acoustic release – available• acoustic release frame – not available • steel ropes for acoustic release and acoustic release controller – presumably available (to be confirmed)

Availability of integration and test tools:• LOM loader – available • welding machine – available• testing equipment – available• dark room – very simplified layout considered (DU arranged on transportation palette and shielded from light)• dark rom calibration tools – available• shore station/DAQ test station – in preparation• Field test equipment – to be defined (can it be the same as for DU-1?)

Recent news: • Flange machined and equipped with connectors and (dmmy) penetrator for pressure test• Pressure test of sealed container ongoing (today!) • Cases of penetrators produced, now being equipped with feedthrough in USA

implemented by Pave Technology (to be

tested later by KM3NeT)

Procurement of components

Decided/ongoing:

• BCI (BPS-CLB Interface for base modules) – 35 (enough for full Phase-1)

• AHRS – 190 (enough for completing Phase-1)

• Power-boards – 350 (enough for completing Phase-1)

• VEOC – new round of pre-production for 5 cables

• DC/DC converters for the 5 VEOCs (estimated delivery: October) – should we start by building one VEOC ORCA-style with the existing DC/DC of Nikhef?

• SFP receivers for shore stations in KM3NeT-Fr and KM3NeT-It

• Note added during the meeting: SFPs and optical components for base modules of KM3NeT-Fr to be sorted out

Please inform me of ANY new order of components, possibly in advance if it requires more than 10 kEuro (they need to be accounted for in the table cost of the experiment)
