GOALS AND CRITERIA TEXAS Develop a master plan for a fitness community - Support for compact neighborhood-oriented development - Provide 10/20 dwelling units per acre or more - Improve compatability with adjacent land uses - Deter short trip vehicle usage - Use streets 22 to 29 feet wide - Utilize Parking Garages Decentralize the fitness center into 3 parts - Center for Strength and Conditioning - Center for Cardiovascular Training - Center for Aquatics Training Optimize residential accessibility and convenience to parks, trails and open spaces - A park or high quality open space to be within a 2- minute walk of every dwelling - A dedicated green space should be 1/6 acre - Utilize 1/4 mile catchment areas for destinations Provide multimodal choices - Incorporate bike lanes - Use streets 22 to 29 feet wide - Sidewalks 5-8 feet of clear walking Establish connectivity - Block connections should be 300-500 feet, if longer use trails to maintain connectivity FORT WORTH BACKGROUND ABSTRACT PROJECT DESCRIPTION A person’s physical activity behaviors are enabled or constrained by various environmental forces . These forces can include finances, location of food sources, proximity of appropriate exercising facilities , exposure to marketing, and availability of public transportation. All have the effective ability to influence one’s decisions. In other words, context and convenience matters . Therefore, the goal of this project is to implement a healthy living and fitness community within a military setting. The study will focus on community design with the inclusion of a decentralized fitness center in order to meet the needs of military personnel and promote a culture of fitness. The intent of this project is to implement a fitness-oriented built environment within a military context to promote physical activity of military personnel. In consideration of the level of fitness required by the military and the prevalence of physical inactivity, this project intends to use community and building design to affect physical activity behavior in two several spatial scales. Scale One - Master Planned Community Scale Two - Decentralized Fitness Centers Obesity has become a public health crisis in the United States. The prevalence of obesity has steadily increased over the past three decades. Obesity has many health, social, psychological, and economic consequences for the individuals being affected as well as for the society. There are continuous changes in society (e.g., contextual environmental factors ) and in people’s active lifestyles that put a growing proportion of the population at increased risk for obesit y. Obesity Trends in US population 30% 20% 15% 1988 1998 2008 Obesity in the military has nearly tripled in the past ten years, posing a risk to national security and causing fiscal issues. The military is not your standard-issue work place; being physically fit is a requirement for many job descriptions in the organization. The various branches of the US Military vary in their physical fitness requirements . Physical Activity and the Military To maintain physical readiness, military personnel should adopt a training regimen that incorporates activities focused in the areas of strength and conditioning , cardiovascular aerobics , and aquatic training . SITE INFORMATION Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base (NASJRB) Fort Worth is a joint defense facility located within the city limits of Fort Worth, Texas. Fort Worth is part of the Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) metroplex . NAS Ft Worth is located seven miles North/Northwest of downtown Ft. Worth . It hosts units from the reserve components of the United States Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. The facility plays a pivotal role in training and equipping air crews and aviation ground support personnel. NAS Fort Worth serves approximately 10000 active duty and reservist personnel , while also serving tenants, and the surrounding communities. The intention is to use a Northeast section of the base as a potential location to implement the fitness community. This particular location has access to the natural amentiy of Lake Worth. This section of the base tends to be segregated and under utilized given its “prime” location near the water. population 51-59 41-50 31-40 22-30 18-21 Age 60-69 0% 100% 50% issues Connectedness and Convenience Walkability Bikeability Biophilia Integrated Design Transportation and Vehicular Use Impervious Surface Natural Amenities 1 2 3 Ex.
