He is Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong, teaching the Harvard GSD‐HKU Joint Studio, undergraduate design studio and a MArch seminar. Until January 2009, Tom Verebes was co‐Director of the post‐professional masters’ level Design Research Lab, at the Architectural Association in London, where he had taught since 1996. He is the Director of the AA Shanghai Summer School (2007‐2009), to be hosted at the HKU Study Centre Former Director of the AA D_Lab (2006‐2007), and former AA Diploma Unit Master. He was also Guest/Visiting Professor at Akademie der Buildenden Künste ABK Stuttgart, among other appointments. Graduate of McGill University (Canada), LoPSiA (France), and at the AA in London.
Tom is the Creative Director of OCEAN.CN, a Hong Kong‐based design consultancy network, and he co‐founded the OCEAN design network in 1995, subsequently directing OCEAN UK within OCEAN D. He has worked in the offices of Rick Mather, Munkenbeck + Marshall, and Stanton‐Williams in London, and was a partner in IDP Hong Kong in 1994.
Recent exhibitions include Venice Biennale, Beijing Biennale, Seville Biennale, Zoomorphic (Victoria & Albert Museum, London), Latent Utopias (Graz, Austria), Experimental Architecture (FRAC Collection, Orléans), and Artists Space (New York). Recent publications include editing and writing a 368 page monograph, ‘DRLTEN: A Design Research Compendium’, along with numerous articles in issues of Architectural Design AD, Architectural Review, RIBA Journal, Urban China, Urban Flux, Archicreation, World Architecture, and books including ‘Digital Architecture Now’, Disappearing Architecture, 10x10x2, Next Generation Architecture: Folds, Blobs, and Boxes, and others. He has lectured extensively in Asia, Europe, North America, and the Middle East.
His research focuses on the paradox between the evolutionary, adaptive nature of cities, and the augmentation of the cultural, social, environmental and economic sustainability of contemporary architecture. This approach to urbanism and architecture necessitates advanced computational methods to manage dynamic information related to the performance of urban environments and architectural spaces, and the prototyping of innovations beyond standards and conventions.
