How to protect your eyes whilelighting crackersBy Our Staff Reporter

The incidence of fireworks-related injuries during Diwali is increasingeach year. The hands (40%), eyes (20%), and the head and face (20%)are the body areas most often involved.

Of these, eye injuries are the most serious and difficult to cure andcan often lead to complete loss of vision.

Lacerations, chemical injuries and embedding of foreign bodies arethe most common injuries to the eye from fireworks, with approxi-mately one third of the injuries resulting in permanent blindness.

Dr. Vasumathy Vedantham (Medical Director, Radhatri Nethralaya,Hindi Prachar Sabha Street, T. Nagar, Ph: 2433 2229, 2431 1550)advices parents, community leaders and children to be educated on thehazards of fireworks and prevention as well as the first aid treatmentof injuries, especially those involving the eyes.

She has the following advice to offer:1. Wear eye protection such as plain glass that covers the eyes up

to the eyebrows while bursting crackers or watching fireworks.2. Stock a first aid kit with a rigid eye shield and antibiotic eye drops.

It is available in medical shops.3. Ensure that children are allowed to fire crackers only under adult

supervision.4. Check the area before igniting fireworks and remove any flam-

mable and combustible materials.5. Always have a bucket of water at hand to extinguish any incipient

fire or for rinsing the affected area of the body.6. Follow all safety precautions mentioned in the packet of the

firework.7. Use a thick agarbathi (incense stick), specially made for firing

crackers to ignite fireworks. It burns without an open flame, providesa safer distance between your hands and the fireworks and also makesthe wick to ignite slowly thereby giving you time to move away beforethe firework bursts.

8. Do not treat even minor eye injury as harmless. When in doubt, consult an eye doctor immediately.

Chemical burns to the eye:Following intrusion of chemicals into the eyes especially when

rubbing eyes after touching crackers or gun powder, symptoms suchas pain, sensitivity to light, severe watering of eyes, reddened eyeballs, and swollen eyelids can occur.

It is advisable to wash hands properly before handling the patient’seye.

Open the affected eyelids gently with your fingers.Check if the eyeballs are intact or if there is a perforating injury with

collapse of eyeballs. If the eyeball is intact, flush the eye gently cool running cool water

to help clean and cool the eye and prevent further chemical reaction. The best way to do it is to hold the eye under a shower, or pour waterinto the eye using a clean container. Keep the eye open and as wide foras long as possible while flushing with water. Continue flushing for atleast 15 minutes.

Do not bandage the eye but apply a shield to it.Take the patient to an eye doctor immediately after the first aid

treatment. As a general rule, in cases of severe pain, reduced vision, or discolora-

tion (black eye), following a cracker injury, seek emergency medicalcare. Any of these symptoms could mean internal eye damage andmight need emergency intervention for preservation of vision loss.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, I am a regular reader of Mambalam Times and I follow yourarticles of public interest very closely.

One such aspect is your reporting of encroachments in public places.I would like to point out that a huge generator belonging to a private

enterprise is blocking the pavement outside Vasantham MarriageHall, Arya Gowda Road, close to its intersection with Srinivasa PillaiStreet. The generator is kept on the pavement at the busy intersectiondepriving the road users of their rightful space. To add to that, there isan obstructive wall protecting the generator which effectively pre-vents the pedestrian from using the pavement and forcing them to walkon the busy road and risk their lives. I have often witnessed seniorcitizens struggling to cross the road here.

I appeal to the concerned authorities to take immediate action ingetting the generator removed from the pavement. – S Rajagopalan,16 Umapathy Street Extension, West Mambalam.

NOTA can increase percentage of polling andbring down bogus votes

Sir, - This refers to the ‘No Holds Barred’ column by M. A. Sadanandtitled ‘None of the above—NOTA’ published last week in MambalamTimes.

NOTA is a ‘notable’ development to have happened in the electoralprocess of the democratic India. While the NOTA option will force thenetas of political parties to think many times before they come up withtheir choice of ‘NOTABLE’ candidates, for those voters who used toshun the elections (not vote) on the basis of the ‘credentials’ of thecandidates, the NOTA will make them rethink, for, they can nowexpress their dissent by pushing the NOTA button.

NOTA in effect will also minimize bogus voting. NOTA will effectivelypreclude NOT ABLE candidates from the contest. Thus, the NOTAoption is NOTABLE on many counts.— V.S. Jayaraman, 31, MotilalStreet, T. Nagar

Potholes riddle Guild Street near Madley subwaySir, There is a deep crater and a number of potholes at the intersec-

tion of Guild Street and Madley Subway in front of the TASMAC shop.It is a busy stretch and vehicles struggle to pass through this section

everyday owing the bad condition of the road. The condition worsensduring rains and vehicles, especially 2-wheelers, often skid whilepassing through this stretch. A major mishap is in the waiting.

The section of the road just opposite to this, in front of T. Nagar PoliceStation, was asphalted but this stretch was ignored.

Repeated requests to the authorities have only fallen on deaf ears.I appeal to the authorities to take immediate action and get the road

repaired before the onset of monsoon. – M.A. Jaishankar, 38, NatesaIyer Street, T. Nagar; Ph: 97909 34666

Generator blocks pavement of Arya Gowda Road

Sir, We are residents ofJeevanan-dam Street, WestK.K. Nagar. This Street is animportant link connectingVembuliamman Koil Street withEast and West Vannier Street.

Vani Vidyala and MeenakshiCollege are located onVembuliamman Koil Street andthis road is the main approachfor both the school and the col-lege students. Thousands of ve-

Sewage water stagnation in Jeevanandam Street hindersresidents and road users

hicles pass through this road as this is the main connection from ArcotRoad to K.K. Nagar and Ashok Pillar. For more than two monthsdrainage water has been oozing out from a leak in the pipeline andflooding the street.

The stagnation is also causing an awful stench throughout the dayand posing a safety and health hazard to nearby residents and roadusers. This has also caused sudden spurt in proliferation of mosquitoesand a number of children and elderly residents of the area have beenafflicted with fever, diarrhea and other such symptoms. A number ofour Residents’ Association members and also individual residents havelodged several complaints with the concerned officials in our ward officeof Metrowater and Chennai Corporation but no remedial action has

been taken so far. Weare also sending somephotographs of thepresent condition ofJeevanandam Streetfor publication.

We hope that afterthe publishing of thisletter in MambalamTimes, the authoritieswill wake up and takeremedial measures toplug the leakage andrid the residents of thehardship. – Resi-dents, Jeevanan-dam Street, WestK.K. Nagar
