Rosary & Benediction On Sept. 20, 1918, after celebrating Mass, and praying in thanksgiving, Padre Pio was suddenly overtaken by powerful trembling. He saw Our Lord in his crucified form. He was lamenting the ingratitude of men, especially those consecrated to him and favored by him." "Christ’s suffering was apparent as was his desire to join souls to His Passion. He invited him to let His pains enter into him, meditate on them and at the same time concern himself with the salvation of others. Following this, St. Pio said” I felt full of compassion for the Lord's pains and I asked him what I could do. I heard this voice: 'I will unite you with my Passion.' And after this the vision disappeared, I came back to myself, my reason returned and I saw these signs here from which blood flowed. ”The stigmata was not the result of a personal request, but came from an invitation of the Lord, who, lamenting the ingratitude of men, and consecrated persons in particular, conferred on Padre Pio a mission as the culmination of an interior mystical journey of preparation. The love of Jesus in the Eucharist was intimately connected with love for Mary. He wrote, “I feel that I am closely bound to the Son through the Mother, without seeing the chains that hold me fast … I am constantly dying and yet forever alive.” With the passage of time his love for Mary became more fervent. He loved to call her “Mammina” (“Little Mama”). Padre Pio showed his Marian devotion by his constant and uninterrupted recitation of the rosary. He always had the rosary in his bleeding hands since he considered it a powerful weapon. “This prayer, the rosary, is a summary of our faith; the basis of our hope; the outpouring of our charity, he said.” In the monastery he spent many hours in prayer before the statue of Santa Maria delle Grazie, and asked her intercession on behalf of those who had come to him for help. May 2 Padre Pio Prayer Group Gathering at beginning with Mass at 8:30 a.m. St. Barnabas Church, 9451 Brandywine Rd.,

May 7 Knight of Columbus Holy Hour 7 p.m. at St. Barnabas Church. Rosary & Benediction

On  Sept.  20,  1918,  after  celebrating  Mass,  and  praying  in  thanksgiving,  Padre  Pio  was  suddenly  overtaken  by  powerful  trembling.  He  saw  Our  Lord  in  his  crucified  form.  He  was  lamenting  the  ingratitude  of  men,  especially  those  consecrated  to  him  and  favored  by  him."

"Christ’s  suffering  was  apparent  as  was  his  desire  to  join  souls  to  His  Passion.

REFLECTIONS FROM OUR SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR

LENT 365! aka “Sinners Anonymous” “If you have the courage to imitate Mary Magdalene in her sins, have the courage to imitate her penance!”

~St. Pio of Pietrelcina So how has your Lenten penances, sacrifices, and works of charity going? Difficult? Easy? “Don’t Ask?” “Just Right?” Well these 40 days are just the yearly refresher course on what we should be doing each and every day of our life. “Repent and believe in the Gospel” is not just a 40 days event. We “give up” our external Lenten practices of coffee, sweets, meat, television, internet, etc., to express our inner “giving up” of our sins of cursing and swearing, lying, cheating, gossiping, stealing, viewing/reading/owning immoral books/videos/magazines [these are not just pornography, but also trashy romantic books, gossip magazines, and many cable late night movies], adultery and fornication, abortion and sins against life, etc. If we cannot wait for Lent to be over so we can go back to our coffee, sweets, meat, television, internet, etc., then what does that say about our giving up our sins. Do we go back to sinning after Lent is over? No, that would be unthinkable, but we do not realize that Lent is 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year event. We do not stop in our quest to “Repent and believe in the Gospel” until our last breath has left our bodies. Lent begins at our baptism and ends at death. That is why children should do the external Lenten sacrifices to learn how to begin to turn away from their sins while adults do more works of charity and turn away from their sins. Most adults become frustrated after the third day of Lent because they cannot keep their external Lenten practices. They end up becoming discouraged and just stop. This just show us how weak our human nature really is and what does that say about any possibility for us to give up our sins. This brings to mind individuals who are in one of the many “Anonymous” groups that are available to help someone who has an addiction to something. They have to “repent and believe in their Higher Power” to get through each day of their life without partaking in their addiction. That is why we all, if we are honest with ourselves, are members of “Sinners Anonymous.” We are powerless over our sins; we need to rely on our “Higher Power” which is God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; we make an inventory of our sins and those who we have hurt from our sins; we tell some about our sins, that is the Sacrament of Penance; we have a sponsor, in our case a good friend, priest, or spiritual director, to help us on our daily journey to “Repent and believe in the Gospel;” and then work on ways to amend our life so that we learn to avoid our sins. Just as Alcoholics Anonymous was founded as a spiritual means to give up addiction to alcohol; “Sinners Anonymous” is also the spiritual means to give up our addiction to sins. Our program’s steps are not twelve steps but fourteen steps. They are the Fourteen Stations “steps” of the Cross. Jesus, Himself, has shown us how we are to take up our cross [sins] and follow Him. He has shown us how to daily die to our will and to do the Father’s Will. He took up His Cross out of love for us and we take up our cross out of love for Him. He is the “Higher Power” to help us “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” All we have to do is “just do it.” Something that is easier said than done. Jesus did it, so must we. We still have four weeks of Lent and Holy Week left before Easter. Our Spiritual Father, St. Pio had said: "If He asks us to carry the Cross, the Lord will help and give strength." St. Padre Pio will also help us to carry our cross and to helps us “to die to self and always live by Your most holy Word.” Easter will be here soon, but we first have to go through Holy Week. Yours in Christ, Fr. Edward J. Janoch Spiritual Director

MEDJUGORJE

1

On  June  24,  1981,  six  children  in  the  town  of  Medjugorje,  Yugoslavia  (today,  Bosnia-‐Herzegovina),  began  to  experience  phenomena  which  they  alleged  to  be  apparitions  of  the  Blessed  Virgin  Mary.  This  apparition  had  a  message  of  peace  for  the  world,  as  well  as  a  call  to  conversion,  prayer  and  fasting.  It  also  entrusted  to  the  children  secret  messages  about  events  to  be  fulfilled  in  the  future.  These  "secrets,"  confided  individually  to  different  visionaries,  have  not  been  revealed  to  the  public.  The  apparitions  themselves  have  continued  almost  daily  since  1981,  with  some  of  the  now  young  adults  continuing  to  experience  them  regularly  (those  who  have  not  yet  received  all  the  secrets  intended  for  them)  and  others  not.  Originally  they  occurred  on  a  hilltop  near  the  town  where  a  large  Cross  commemorating  the  Redemption  exists.  They  have  since  occurred  in  many  other  places,  including  the  parish  church,  St.  James,  and  wherever  the  visionaries  happen  to  be  located  at  the  time  of  the  apparition.  The  news  that  Our  Lady  might  be  appearing  immediately  began  to  attract  pilgrims  to  Medjugorje,  first  from  the  surrounding  countryside,  and  then,  despite  the  communist  government  of  that  day,  from  Europe  and  the  whole  world.  These  included  clergy  and  theologians,  as  well  as  experts  from  the  physical  and  medical  sciences  who  testified  to  some  kind  of  phenomenon  taking  place  when  the  apparition  was  said  to  be  occurring.  The  private  judgment  of  these  early  visitors  did  much  to  bolster  people's  belief  in  the  events  at  Medjugorje.  In  addition,  some  pilgrims  reported  seeing  the  sun  spin  and  being  able  to  look  at  it  without  pain  or  eye  damage,  others  that  their  rosaries  turned  gold  colored,  still  others  that  remarkable  physical  or  spiritual/moral  healings  had  taken  place.  All  of  these  contributed  to  the  fame  of  the  alleged  apparition.

Ecclesiastical  Evaluation:  Since  the  Medjugorje  events  had  exceeded  the  scope  of  a  local  event,  Cardinal  Kuharic,  President  of  the  Yugoslavian  Bishops  Conference,  announced  in  January  1987  that  a

2

national  commission  would  be  established  to  continue  investigating.  This  decision  had  been  communicated  to  the  Holy  See,  which  stated  that  it  accepted  the  judgment  of  the  diocesan  commission  under  the  authority  of  the  local  bishop  but  urged,  as  well,  that  the  work  be  continued  at  the  national  level.  In  April  1991  the  following  declaration  was  made  by  the  Bishops'  Conference  of  the  former  Yugoslavia:  The  bishops,  from  the  very  beginning,  have  been  following  the  events  of  Medjugorje  through  the  Bishop  of  the  diocese  [Mostar],  the  Bishop's  Commission  and  the  Commission  of  the  Bishops  Conference  of  Yugoslavia  on  Medjugorje.  The  Director  of  the  Holy  See's  Press  Office,  Dr.  Joaquin  Navarro-‐Valls,  clarifies,  stating,    ‘You  cannot  say  people  cannot  go  there  until  it  has  been  proven  false.  This  has  not  been  said,  so  anyone  can  go  if  they  want.’

As  the  Vatican  continues  to  study  Medjugorje  its  followers  wait  patiently  for  guidance  from  the  Church.

St. James Church, Medjugorje

SUGGESTED SCRIPTURE READING AND MEDITATION

FOR MARCH AND APRIL

And   the   angel   came   in   unto   her,  and  said,  Hail,  thou  that  art  highly  favored,   the   Lord   is   with   thee:  blessed   art   thou   among   women.  Luke1:28-‐30

For  he  hath  regarded  the  low  estate  of  his  handmaiden:  for,  behold,  from  henceforth  all  generations  shall  call  me  blessed.  Luke  1  :48

Do  this  in  remembrance

of  Me.                                            1  Corinthians11:24

When   Jesus   therefore  saw   His   mother,   and  the   disciple   standing  by,  whom  He  loved,  he  said   unto   His   mother,  Woman,   behold   thy  son!   Then   He   said   to  the   disciple,   Behold  thy  mother!   And   from  that  hour   that   disciple  took  her  unto  his  own  home.    John  19  26-‐27

Christ   is   the   mediator  of   a  new  Covenant,   so  that   by   means   of   His  death,   those   who   are  called  may   receive   the  promise   of   an   eternal  inheritance.            Hebrews  9:15

Five First Saturday Devotion

Our Lady returned to Fatima on Dec.10, 1925 and gave the great promise that went with making the Five First Saturdays: “I promise to assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep Me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, with intention of making reparation to Me.”

REFLECT THE RISEN CHRIST!

Pope  Francis  carrying  the  Paschal  Candle  at  the  Basilica  of  St.  Peter,  Vatican  City

“Those  who  went  to  San  Giovanni  Rotondo  to  attend  his  Mass,  to  seek  his  counsel  or  to  confess  to  him,  saw  in  him  a  living  image  of  Christ  suffering  and  risen.  The  face  of  Padre  Pio  reflected  the  light  of  the  Resurrection.”

From  the  Homily  at  the  Beatification  Mass  for  St.  Pio  of  Pietrelcina  by  St.  John  Paul  II,    2  May  1999    At  the  Easter  Vigil,  the  most  solemn  of  Masses  for  the  Catholic  Church,  the  Paschal  Candle  is  brought   into  a  darkened  church.    The  only  light  is  from  the  candle.    We  proclaim  three  times,  in  the  darkness:    Lumen  Christi  [Light  of  Christ]  and  then   the  darkened   church  begins   to   fill  with   light  as   the   church  glows  with   the   light   from  the  Paschal  Candle   to   the  candles  held  by  each  individual.    This  Lumen  Christi  is  a  reflection  of  our  receiving  the  Light  of  Christ  at  our  baptism.    We  were  promised  by  our  parents  or  by  ourselves  made  the  promise  if  we  were  baptized  as  an  adult,  to  be  enlightened  by  Christ   through  our   life’s   journey  by   being   taught   our   faith   through  words   and   actions.     Our   lives  were   promised   to  become   reflections   of   Christ   in   our   world.  We   reflect   both   the   Resurrection   and   the   Death   of   Jesus:     The   Paschal  Mystery.    In  a   letter   to  his  Spiritual  Daughter,  Raffaelina  Cerase,  Padre  Pio  writes   in  greeting:  “May   the  Holy  Spirit   fill   your  soul  with  His  most  holy  gifts  and  make  you  holy.  May  the  risen  Jesus  make  you,  too,  feel  a  spark  of  His  holy  love  and  reveal  more  and  more  to  you  the  mysteries  of  the  Cross.  May  the  sorrowful  Virgin  obtain  for  you  from  her  most  holy  Son  true  and   sincere   love   of   the   cross   and  may   your   soul   be   inebriated  with   it.   Amen.”     (April   10,   1915)     Easter   is   not   Easter  without  Holy  Week.    Christ  “showed  himself  the  Priest,  the  Altar,  and  the  Lamb  of  sacrifice.”  (Preface  V  of  Easter  from  The  Roman  Missal)    The  Victor  had  to  first  be  the  Victim.    As  Bishop  Fulton  Sheen  said:      “Unless  there  is  a  Good  Friday  in  your  life,  there  can  be  no  Easter  Sunday.”    All  this  is  to  help  us  to  Rejoice  in  the  Risen  Lord.    It  is  to  help  us  find  joy  again  in   the   midst   of   suffering,   the   carrying   of   our   cross.     If   our   world   was   always   one   filled   with  joy,  we  would  begin  to  take  it  for  granted  and  eventually  we  would  lose   its   meaning.     Suffering  takes   joy   away,   but   it   also  makes   us   joyful   again  when   the   suffering   is   gone.     As   the   fourth  verse  of  the  Lenten  song  Lord,  Who  Throughout  These  Forty  Days  states:             Abide  with  us  that  when  this  life

Of  suffering  is  past,    An  Easter  of  unending  joy  We  may  attain  at  last.

The  Joy  of  the  Risen  Christ  is  revealed  through  Jesus  by  stating  that  he  is  the  Light  of  the  world,  a  light  that  dispels  the  darkness.    He  overcomes  sin  and  death.    He   enlightens  us   to   follow  the  narrow  path   to  Heaven.    He   fills  us  with  His  Wisdom,  an  enlightenment  through  knowledge  of  Him  through  His  Bride,  the  Church.    All  this  is  done  so  that  we  may  reflect  the  Risen  Christ  in  our  world  and  to  those  who  live  in  the  shadow  of  death.    He  guides  us  on  the  way  to  peace.    Just  as  every  day  of  our  life  is  a  Lent,  at  turning  away  from  sin  and  believing  the  Gospel;  we  also  are  to  reflect  the  Risen  Christ  dispelling  the  darkness  of  sin,  every  day  of  our  life.    This  is  only  done  through  Christ.  Reflect  the  Risen  Christ!  Fr.  Edward  J.  Janoch  Spiritual  Director

DIVINE MERCY In  church  history,  when  there  is  an  upcoming  serious  challenge,  God  usually  sends  Mary,  a  Saint,  or  Jesus  to  inspire  someone  to  convey  to  people  what  to  do.  Some  examples  are:    St.  Ignatius  at  the  time  of  the  Protestant  Reformation,  Our  Lady  of  Guadalupe,  when  Mexico  was  conquered  by  Spain,  our  Lady  of  Fatima  at  the  start  of  the  World  War  I,  and  Saint  Faustina  for  World  War  II  and  the  Third  Millennium.          Pope  John  Paul  being  not  afraid  but  rather  full  of  trust  in  God,  realized  that  he  had  a  special  role  to  play  in  the  Fatima  promises.    He  consecrated  Russia  and  the  world  to  the  Immaculate  Heart  of  Mary  and  down  came  communism  in  Europe  and  Russia.      This  was  a  great  blessing  from  God.  However,  the  world  situation  almost  seems  worse  now  then  it  was  before  communism  fell.  Our  own  country  seems  to  be  getting  worse  with  moral  erosion  and  the

conflict  with  secularists  who  try  to  dechristianize  society.  Fear  is  gripping  the  hearts  of  Americans  due  to  world  conflicts.  Like  St.  John  Paul  we  need  to    “be  not  afraid”  and  trust  in  God.

We  can  do  this  in  two  basic  ways:

The  first  way  is  by  heeding  the  Fatima  message  of  prayer  and  penance.  Fr.  Andrew  Apostoli  of  EWTN  points  out  that.  Sr.  Lucy,  one  of  the  Fatima  visionaries,  said  that  there  is  still  one  unfilled  condition  before  world  peace  could  occur-‐  the  first  Saturday  Devotion  which  is  treated  in  another  article  in  this  newsletter.

The  second  way  is  by  heeding  the  message  of  Divine  Mercy.  In  the  1930’s,  St.  Faustina,  a  Polish  nun,  wrote  a  diary  of  some  600  pages  called  “Divine  Mercy  in  My  Soul”  recording  revelations  she  received  from  Jesus.  If  people  do  what  Jesus  recommends,  we  can  obtain  His  mercy,  individually  and  for  our  world.    If  not,  there  will  have  to  be  a  judgment.

SOME  ELEMENTS  OF  DIVINE  MERCY  ARE:

1. Ask  for  mercy-‐  “Souls  that  make  an  appeal  to  my  mercy  delight  me  to  such  souls.    I  grant  even  more  graces  than  they  ask.  I  cannot  punish  even  the  greatest  sinner  if  he  makes  an  appeal  to  My  compassion”(diary  1146).  “Beg  for  mercy  for  the  whole  world”(570).  ”No  soul  that  has  called  upon  My  mercy  has  ever  been  disappointed”    (1541).

2. Be  merciful  to  others-‐  “I  demand  from  you  deeds  of  mercy  which  are  to  arise  out  of  love  for  Me.  You  are  to  show  mercy  to  your  neighbors  always  and  everywhere.  If  a  soul  does  not  exercise  mercy  in  some  way,  it  will  not  obtain  My  mercy  on  the  day  of  judgment”(1317).

3. Completely  trust  in  Jesus-‐  “I  have  opened  my  heart  as  a  living  Fountain  of  Mercy.  Let  souls  approach  this  sea  of  mercy  with  great  trust”  (1520).  ”On  the  cross,  the  Fountain  of  My  Mercy  was  opened  wide  by  the  lance  for  all  souls-‐no  one  have  I  excluded”(1182.)    I  am  offering  people  a  vessel  with  which  they  are  to  keep  coming  for  graces  to  the  fountain  of  mercy.  That  vessel  is  the  image  with  the  signature,  “Jesus  I  trust  in  You”(327).  “The  graces  of  mercy  are  drawn  by  means  of  one  vessel  only,  and  that  is  –trust.  The  more  a  soul  trusts,  the  more  it  will  receive”(1578).  “Trust  involves  a  turning  back  to  God,  a  real  conversion  of  our  whole  lives  to  God,  repenting  of  our  sins  and  forgiving  others.  Trust  involves  a  living  faith;  tell  humankind  to  snuggle  close  to  My  merciful  heart,  and  I  will  fill  it  with  peace”(1074).  A  living  trust  in  Jesus  is  the  antidote  to  the  fear  that  grips  at  the  heart  of  so  many  people  today.

4. Proclaiming  mercy-‐  ”Souls  who  spread  the  honor  of  My  mercy  I  shield  through  their  entire  life  as  a  tender  mother  her  infant.  At  the  hour  of  death  I  will  not  be  a  Judge  for  them,  but  a  Merciful  Savior”(1075).

5. Confession-‐  tribunal  of  god’s  mercy.”    When  you  go  to  confession,  to  this  Fountain  of  Mercy,  the  blood  and  water  which  came  forth  from  the  heart  always  flows  down  upon  your  soul”(1602).  In  the  Tribunal  of  Mercy,  the  greatest  miracles  take  place  and  are  incessantly  repeated”(1448).    “Come  with  faith  to  the  feet  of  My  representative,  the  priest”(1448).  I  Myself  am  waiting  there  for  you.  I  am  only  hidden  by  the  priest.  I  Myself  act  in  your  soul”(1602).  Focus  much  more  on  Jesus  than  an  individual  priest.

6.   The  image  of  Divine  Mercy-‐  “I  promise  that  the  soul  who  will  venerate  this  image  will  not  perish.  I  also     promise  victory  over  its  enemies  already  here  on  earth,  especially  at  the  hour  of  death.  I  Myself  will     defend  it  as  My  own  glory”(47,48).  “The  two  rays  denote  Blood  and  Water.  The  pale  ray  stands  for  the     Water  which  makes  the  soul  righteous.  The  red  ray  stands  for  My  Blood,  which  is  the  life  of  souls.  These    two     rays  issued  forth  from  the  very  depths  of  My  tender  mercy  when  my  agonized  Heart  was  opened  by  a     lance  on  the  Cross.  Happy  is  the  one  who  will  dwell  in  their  shelter”(299).  “By  means  of  this  image,  I  will     grant  many  graces”  (742).

6. The  feast  of  mercy  on  the  Sunday  after  Easter  is  called,  ‘Divine  Mercy  Sunday’.  “On  that  day  the  very  depths  of  My  tender  mercy  are  open.  The  soul  that  will  go  to  Confession  and  receive  Holy  Communion  shall  obtain  complete  forgiveness  of  sins  and  punishment”(699).      A  holy  hour  on  Divine  Mercy  Sunday  is  held  at  many  churches  at  3  p.m.

7. A  Novena  to  the  Divine  Mercy  begins  on  Good  Friday  and  culminates  on  Mercy  Sunday.    “By  this  novena,  I  will  grant  every  possible  grace  to  souls”(796).

8. “The  Chaplet”.  The  Chaplet  or  basic  prayer  of  Divine  Mercy  is  said  using  a  Rosary.    It  begins  with  the  Our    Father,  Hail  Mary,  Apostle’s  Creed.  On  the  large  beads  before  each  decade,  the  prayer  is,  “Eternal  Father,  I  offer  you  the  Body,  Blood,  Soul  and  Divinity  of  your  dearly  beloved  Son,  Our  Lord  Jesus  Christ,  in  atonement  of  our  sins  and  those  of  the  whole  world.”  On  10  small  beads  we  say,  “For  the  sake  of  His  sorrowful  Passion,  have  mercy  on  us  and  on  the  whole  world.”      The  concluding  prayer  is,    “Holy  God,  Holy  Mighty  One,  Holy  Immortal  One,  have  mercy  on  us  and  on  the  whole  world.”    Repeated  3  times.

9. The  three  o’clock  hour.  It  is  recommended,  although  not  necessary,  that  the  Chaplet  be  recited  at  3  o’clock.  The  hour  at  which  Jesus  died  for  us.  (if  you  can  not  recite  at  3’oclock  just  meditate  for  a  moment  on  Jesus’s  divine  mercy  and  mention  your  intentions).  Try  setting  a  reoccurring  reminder  on  your  phone  for  3  p.m.

10. Mercy  for  dying-‐  Jesus  said,  “Pray  as  much  as  you  can  for  the  dying.  By  your  entreaties,  obtain  for  them  in  My  mercy,  because  they  have  most  need  of  trust,  and  have  it  the  least”(1777).  ”At  the  hour  of  their  death,  I  defend  as  my  own  glory  every  soul  that  will  say  this  Chaplet;  or  when  others  say  it  for  a  dying  person,  the  indulgence  (pardon)  is  the  same”(811).    There  is  a  group  of  people  who  say  the  chaplet  around  the  clock  for  the  dying-‐-‐what  a  blessing  they  are!

11. Preparing  for  the  second  coming-‐  “Speak  to  the  world  about  My  second  coming.    Speak  to  the  world  about  My  mercy…..it  is  the  end  times.  (The  end  times  began  with  the  descent  of  the  Holy  Spirit  and  the  birth  of  the  Church).  After  it  will  come  the  day  of  justice”(848)  “You  will  prepare  the  world  for  My  final  coming”(429).  “Tell  souls  about  this  great  mercy  of  mine,  because  of  the  awful  day,  the  day  of  my  justice,  I  am  prolonging  the  time  of  mercy.  (1588).  I  am  prolonging  the  time  of  mercy  for  the  sake  of  the  sinners.  But  woe  to  them  if  they  do  not  recognize  this  time  of  My  visitation.”(1160).  ”The  one  who  refuses  to  pass  through  the  door  of

My  mercy,  must  pass  through  My  door  of  My  justice”(1146).  The  exact  time  of  the  second  coming  is  not  definite.  It  could  be  tomorrow  or  many  years.  St.  Faustina  said  “My  mission  will  not  come  to  an  end  upon  my  death.  I  will  draw  aside  for  you  the  veils  of  heaven  to  convince  you  of  God’s  goodness”(281).

St. Faustina and Padre Pio-- Pray for Us.

Jesus I Trust in You.

Help us to be “another Pope John Paul” being not afraid, but rather trusting in Jesus to bring about grace-filled positive changes in

ourselves and our world. Amen.
