OPINION

Letters tO the Editor: The Republican Response to die Democratk Response to the Republican Analysis

To the Editor

In response to Phil Whitaker's attack on Nate LaMar's article in his Jenerto the editor in last week* s Das Tor. let me address each of his points one at a time. It'sgood to see some healthy debate on the campus!

"Regardless of one'sopiiiion of North, hewas still a "fall guy~for many above him

and was obviously notacting alone."*

Phil spoke of Sale's "repeti tion of a party line." Yes, Nate intended to be partisan, because as Phil would know if he had read the headline, this was the Repub lican Party view of the elections on election night. For the Demo cratic response he chose Scott Wallace, who did a good job wri t- ing the Democrat analysis. More- over. those who know Male know he's a conservative first and a Republican second. I. also a Re publican, pan with my party on issues such as industrial policy, campaign finance reform, and Is rael (or at least the Baker State Department's handling of Israel). In Phil's native Britain, rigid party discipline is strictly enforced within its parliamentary democ racy. TbebeautyoftheUSrepub- bc is thatthereisaplacefor healthy debate within parties, and not just "repetition of a party line."

I would like to see the source of the poll Phi] mentions stating "64% of voters said that President Clinton had no influence on the way they cast their votes." I

searched and searched in the li brary, but came up with nothing remotely supporting Phil's quoted poll. On the contrary, the follow ing major media, none of which are even conservative, published polls showing that this election was in deed a referendum on Clinton and Company: Time. Nov. 21.1994. p. 48; CNN Election Coverage. Nov. 8-9.1994: US News & World Re port, Nov. 21.1994. p. 39-40. Af ter all. not a single incumbent GOP Governor. Senator. or Congressperson was defeated.

Fxe it. a crisis of confidence exists between the US public and President Clinton and his liberal Democrats for many of the same reasons Liberal Democratic rartv Leader Paddy Ashdown or Labour Party leader Niel Kinnock became discredited with the British public I don't have the word space to elaborate here. Ask Phil about Ashdown and Kinnock.

Nate assumed too much when he thought all graduate students could think in the abstract concern ing the relationship between the tax and spend Congress and the spread of AIDS. Space constraints prevented him from speliin£ ii out last time, so now 1 will in me Am plest, most tangible way possible. As Bennett's book documents. Congress increased taxes and spending to pay for more welfare, among other pork. Wi ih increased welfare per child bom came less sexual responsibility. As a result, promiscuity increased. When pro miscuity increased, so did AIDS. It ain't rocket science to figure that one out!

Phil accuses Oliver North of placing "...his own priorities and beliefs ahead of any legal, institu tional, or constitutional con straints." Regardless of one's opinion ofNorth, he was stil 1 a "fall guy," for many above him and was obviously not acting alone. No Lieutenant Colonel (0-5) has that kind of power. Phil's use of the dominant media culture's trendy and fashionable buzz-words against North lead to me believe he sought very few sources before forming his opinion of North. This is how our liberal media would like for the duped public to form its opinions - solely dependent on them.

Brian Rovetta

To the Editor

I decided to write this let ter in response to Phil Whitaker's poorly worded rebuttal of Nate LaMar's analysis of Election '94. after a friend asked me what I thought of the exchange. Knowing that I was professionally involved with campaip work, my friend felt that 1 might be able to clear up his confusion.

Mr. Whitaker attempted to make five points and succeeded in making half of one. The other four and a half were unsuccessful due to Mr. Whitaker's critically sarcastic delivery, misrepresentation of the facts, and a flair for the absurd.

Point» 1: That Mr. LaMar made Mr Whitaker laugh !hen fee! sad. because his article was party- line rhetoric without regard to facts or common sense. FALSE. Mr. LaMar was offering his perspective as a Republican into the election results and the immediate future. His opinions were offered as noth ing more, and where he quoted sta tistics and results, his data checked out Mr. Whitaker's letter, on the

is little debate(Boulder. Co. and B<rkr-

Icy. Ca. fxct-ptrd) thai a

gwmunrnt whirh prohib

its prayer in sch(K»l... is a hollow threat and that

moral values are not important."

other hand, offers only one statistic, and it is misstated

Point # 2: That the election was not a repudiation of "Clinton and Company". Here Mr. Whitaker reversed a poll question and results (a major IMR no-no) when he stated that 64% of voters said that "Presi dent Clinton had no influence on the way that they cast their votes." FALSE. Thepoll showed that Presi dent Clinton was the main issue with 36% of voters. In sum. the majority of the voting population did. in fact, voteagai nst Clinton and Company, and. more importantly, the ideology that drives them.

Point # 3: That Nate's sug gestion that the spread of the HIV /irus be attributed toa tax and spend congress is absurd, irrational, irre

sponsible and dangerous Similarly. Mr. Whitaker found it hard to be lieve that N'ate thinks that since Newt Gingrich will be Speaker of the House, that a cure for AIDS will be forthcoming. A Verbal diuretic gone berserk... Nowhere does Mr. LaMar predict a cure for AIDS thanks to a Republican majority, nor does he blame Congress for the HIV virus. What Mr. LaMar does point out is the direct relationship between a government with a welfare policy that financially promotes births out of wedlock and a tax policy that punishes couples who marry, with an increase in single mother fami lies, number of children bom into poverty.andadecayingmoral value system. There is little debate (Boul der. Co. and Berkeley. Ca. excepted) that a government which prohibits prayer in school and refuses to treat juvenile criminals like criminals promotes, by its inaction or its indi rect action, a climate where kids learn that punishment is a hollow threat and that moral values are not important.

Point # 4: Mr. North was defeated in the election for a variety of reasons, the Iran Contra affair being the principal one. I disagree with Mr. LaMar that the media was to blame. Someone who raises eigh teen million dollars can afford his own exposure. Again, however. Mr. Whitaker refuses to let the truth get in the way of a good story by mis quoting Col. North out of context. When asked whether he would fol low this President's orders. North replied that he wasn't in the service anymore and that this was not "his" commander-in-chkf. All-in-all, this was Mr. Whitaker's best paragraph.

Point # 5: No one, Vice- President Quayle included, ever suggested that Murphy Brown was real. But the fact remains that the glarnonzation of single-parent fami lies and insisting that one parent can easily do the job of two, is sending the wrong message. Mr. Whitaker's sarcastic jab regarding Vice-Presi- dent Quayle "potato"incident serves merely to illustrate the intellectual level at which he functions.

Constantin Querardp.s. to Mr. LaMar - Check your crystal hall... Helms will chair the Foreign Relations Committee and the only way Maria Cuomo will see the Supreme Court is on a tour!

To the Editor:

Reading Phil Whitaker's rebuttal tetter to Nate LeMar's article on the 1994 election re sults. 1 didn't know whether to feel pity, or laugh at it. Its clear that Phil does not have all his facts straight, nor is he a close follower of US politics. I have a B.A. with a major in Political

"It was clear that what Clinton saidof Bush now was

true of Clinton: he ju»t uitin'l get it."

Science and a minor in Legal Studies, as well as a Master of International Relations and a MBA. so I make it aduty of mine to follow the political scene on a daily basis, both nationally and globally.

A fact to consider, when looking at Phil's statement that "the overriding decision factors were local issues" : No incum bent Republican member of the House or Senate was defeated, and not a single incumbent Re publican Govemorwas defeated. And the democrats that were de feated were some of the biggest stars of the Democratic party, including House Speaker Tom Foley. Senator Harris Wofford, Rep. DanRostenkowskLSen. Jim Sasser, Rep. Jack Brooks, Gov. Ann Richards, and Gov. Mario Cuomo. To quoie Newsweek magazine (November 21,1994, Pg 54) -Of the 35 Democratic incumbents in the House who lost last week, 30 out-spent their challengers". I guess its true that money can't buy everything.

Two, Two, Two Food Reviews in One!

By Shaun DakiitDM Tor Restaurant Critic

Tom's BBQBBQ Close 10 Home from a Dis-lancf: TOM'S Chicago Style BBQNE Corner of 59th Ave. and BellRoad (and other locations)Ratings: J-Sviih5 heing the best.Atmosphere: 3"If you like BBQsmoke this is theplace"Service: 3 Hey.it's fast foodThe Food: 4Price: From $3 5<1- $8 depending onwhat goodies youorder.

I must ad mit I love rny BBQ. When I lived in Ja pan I wrote home and had my Parents send me a how-to-BBQ cookbook with recipes on making your own BBQ sauce. I simmered, stirred and jaired some of the best BBQ sauce ever found in rural Japan. At least that is what my students thought, and they did not have much else to base their opinions on.

Verdict. TOM's BBQ is one place not to be missed if you LOVE your BBQ!

Forthoseof you whodon'i know, there are several varieties of BBQ in the USA - along with, of course, the many multinational BBQs found around the world.

There is the basic "Ameri can" BBQ where you head to the local supermarket, pick up a bottle ofBBQ sauce, and fire up the grill in the backyard. Then there is your distinctive North Carolina BBQ which uses nothing but pulled pork and a sweet vinegar base -yum... Memphis says that dry ribs were "discovered" there, but I think it wasmost likely furtherdown South. Then there is TOM's Chicago style BBQ-in Phoenix.

The first thing you notice is the smell of wood-fired ovens that permeates the air in the parking lot and inside the restaurant. The din ning room is large, with the typical American fast food booths and the always necessary photographs of Chicago on the walls.

You order at the cash regis ter and are usually greeted by a cheerful and friendly cook who will, if you ask. substitute the daily spe cials for something else. My favor ite is the Chicken sandwich, a splen- dorous array of succulent white breast and thigh meat chopped up and placed in a hamburger bun, all smothered in TOM's awesome sauce. The portions are large and you can order a small, medium or large sandwich.

Coffeehouse is a cof fee lover's - "let's hang and read all af ternoon" - dream come true. Recently awarded the "Best Coffee House" in the New limes 1994. Orbit is an eclectic cafe located, of course, on the Cam elback corridor. While Orbit does of fer lunch and dinner

' to it's patrons. I have not had the chance to

eat and so this review is only about the atmosphere, coffee, arid des serts.

Orbit isa smoke free cafe, 1 say that up front because I know that several of you will want to smoke and, well, it's just not allowed. For me. the smoke free environment is a real plus - but that's another subject.

Orbit's design is. I believe, centered around a post-art deco at mosphere. As you walk in. you are met by several minimalist wooden tables with small lamps for reading.

Around the comer to your right is the performance area for the musicians and about eight wooden booths. The cafe has several board games and there are always games of Scrabble orChess goingon among the customers.

The coffee, by all accounts, isexceptional. All their baked goods are, however, quite expensive and 1 usually simply buy coffee and hold on to my money.

What makes Orbit the best coffee house around is their con stant presentation of musical acts almost every night of the week. In deed, just this week alone has the following acts performing: Mariah. European Violin & Gypsy Guitar. Nuance, Jazz Violin, Bass & Gui tar, Mary McCain, poetry slam: and TheChief.Jazz&Motown. All the acts are FREE.

On Sunday mornings from 10:30 AM-1:30 PM there is classi cal live piano. A fellow Spanish One study mate and myself have been going each Sunday and have found the music to be especially soothing for studying.

Try to get over to Orbit. While it is a distance, it is worth the trip.

I welcome any suggestions about new restaurants that youwould like to share with the Thunderbird community. I am currently looking for a good Mexican place. Please feel free to call Shaun Dakin at 993- 5361.

NHL Skates on Thin Ice as Lock-out Continues

By Derek McCaUum

The agreement that the NHL Plaver Association put forward to the National Hockey league earlier last week was rejected, in full After missing close to 20'r of the season thus fur. the N'HL is beginning to lose its position as players go over seas to play in Europe and fans lose interests in the banks of Big Busi ness which it has become.

The familiar roar that gen erally fill the professional arenas are not to be heard in thel'.S. or Canada as the lock-out continues. The new issue that is being faced by the two sides is a pay-roll tax. Not only do players now have «o worry about salary caps and free agency, but now the league is looking to install a new system which would help redistrib ute income earned so that the small town teams or the teams that do not have a high earning power can still survive on the frozen pond

This program would force all the teams to pay on a consistent scale, but would redistribute earn ings from the high earners to the low to help pay the salaries. The owners. on the other hand, prefer the free

market capitalist system that pre vails and would like to open it up more in terms of their freedom to buy and sell players.

Some players have aban doned hope of returning to the nnk in the NHL in the near future, and have opted to co plav in the Swedish leagueoreiseuheremEurope. Other players criticize those leaving, ques tioning their commitment to the NHLPA. In short, the players that are going elsewhere to play arc the older players who can't let their skills slip away as they do not have the time to regain them. Those criticizing are the younger ones who have eight ;c ten years io gel their abilities back to peak levels.

What it boils down to is that the players want equal and fairtreat- ment across the league, whereas the owners want the economics of the league to take control, with them at the helm. The fans are wondering where this actually leaves every thing. Most are fearful of the end results, especially those who are in the small towns with teams.

This fear is about teams in these small markets movingtoareas

with higher earning potential so that the players would have the salaries they are demanding. The fear is justified with the recent move and expansion of the league to places like Anaheim. where the Mighty Duck marketing has supported the team as much as the ticket sales, and teams like the Tampa Bay Lighten ing, who draft players just for a spectacle, as in the drafting of Manon Rheaume. the first ever female hockey in the NHL.

It's ironic how more than sixty-five percent of the players in the NHL come from these low in come earning area;, yet the N'Hf, can not find a way to keep a team there without subsidizing the own ers. In the end. what we get is a game operating as a Big Business, a sport looking more like an adver tisement.and a love turned into war. With close to twenty percent of the season gone by without a single game being played, players going elsewhere to play, and a lock-out that will continue to persist, the hockey season, and quite possibly the NHL. has nearly blown it's final whistle.
