TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 16

If anything interesting ishappening in your

neighbourhood please informMambalam Times.

1954 witnessed the peak of success for G. Ramanathan andthe film ‘Thookku Thookki,’ was indeed his career best. In thisfilm, his music touched rare heights of melody, rhythm andexcellence and almost all its songs became hits and somebecame immortal melodies of Tamil Cinemawhich are stillpopular. After more than half a century, those tunes areremembered, heard, and hummed by millions of Tamilianswherever they live around the globe.

Before taking an in-depth look at the various songsRamanathan composed for this film, it will be interesting totake a look at the production ‘back-story’ (a familiar Hollywoodexpression translated as ‘pin kathai’ in Tamil!) which createdmovie history in more ways than one.

‘Thookku Thookki’ was a popular folk tale and stage play inTamil Nadu. It was brought to the screen for the first time in1935 by the famous Madurai-based Rayal Talkie Distributorswith the movie pioneer R. Prakash directing it and handling thecamera.

Noted star of that era C. V. V. Panthulu played the title rolewith the star of yester-decades, known as ‘Stunt Queen’, K. T.Rukmini in the female lead. K. N. Kamalam and ‘Clown’Sundaram formed part of the cast. R. M. Krishnaswami(RMK), then a young, talented camera assistant, was workingwith Prakash. This film was embedded in his mind. He turnedproducer in the 1950s with his Aruna Films and made hisdirectorial debut with ‘Rajambal’. He took up ‘Thookku Thookki’as his next production, which turned out to be the biggestsuccess of his career.

(This writer knew RMK well and worked with him on some ofhis Malayalam movie projects in the script department. For awhile, both worked on a thriller screenplay with MGR to be castas hero but for many reasons the production had to be shelvedbecause MGR was not available for RMK on the latter’s terms!RMK was a tough guy and among his intimate circles he wasknown as ‘Murattu’ Krishnaswami’!)

The tale of ‘Thookku Thookki’ was all about five maxims: 1.A father cares only for the riches earned by his son. 2. Only amother stands by the son through thick and thin. 3. A sistervalues her brother only for the gifts he brings her. 4. A wifeshould never be relied upon since she will even murder herhusband. 5. Lastly, a friend in need is always a friend indeed.

A prince (Sivaji Ganesan) listens to the maxims in a religiousdiscourse and sets out to prove them wrong. He undergoesseveral adventures and finds more than a grain of truth in themaxims.

Sivaji as the hero came up with a fine performance while T.S.Balaiah, in the role of a North Indian Seth, was superb. Thescenes featuring Balaiah speaking Sowcarpet Tamil with hismistress (Lalitha, the hero’s wife) were entertaining.

What elevated this film to great success was its scintillatingmusic composed by G. Ramanathan. The lyrics were by A.Marudhakasi, Thanjai Ramaiah Das and Udumalai NarayanaKavi.

An interesting back-story about the song composing:Udumalai Narayana Kavi based in Coimbatore reached Ma-dras by the Blue Mountain Express on the morning of the dayscheduled for the song composing and recording. He was toreturn by the same train from Central Station around eight inthe night. In less than 12 hours, Narayana Kavi wrote five ofthe eight songs which were composed immediately by G.Ramanathan, rehearsed by T. M. Soundararajan and others, andsung and recorded . An amazing feat of creativity, it vouchesfor the musical genius of G. Ramanathan, the poetic talent ofNarayana Kavi and the captivating singing of TMS.

Many of the songs rendered by Soundararajan becamepopular and it was this film that laid the foundation for hisglorious career. Female singers M. L. Vasanthakumari, M. S.Rajeswari, P. Leela and A. P. Komala also contributed to therichness of the music. Noted singer and actor V. N. Sundaramlent his voice to one of the songs along with TMS and others….

Now for the songs in detail … (To be continued)

Corporation likely to reviseproperty taxBy Our Staff Reporter

Chennai Corporation is planning to link property tax with the currentguideline values, instead of old base rates finalised in 1998. This is likelyto increase the property tax rates across the city.

Following complaints from residents pertaining to anomalies andinconsistencies in the base rates, the civic body is planning to requestthe State government to amend the Chennai City Municipal Corpora-tion Act to revise the property tax every year based on current guidelinevalues.

The civic body continues to calculate property tax based on theannual rental value of a property and on base rates fixed 16 years ago.

With the Chennai Corporation considering a proposal to reviseproperty tax rates on the basis of current guideline values, residentswonder what the impact on their expenses will be.

Some neighbourhoods in the recently-added areas of Chennai Corpo-ration pay the same property tax as those in well-developed areas suchas T. Nagar that fetch high rental values, experts said, pointing toanomalies.

Residents of such neighbourhoods with low guideline values pay thesame amount of property tax as neighbourhoods with high guidelinevalues every half year.

A chunk of the 11 lakh residential and commercial properties whichhave relatively lower property tax rates are within the old city limits. The civic body will map all such roads to asses the loss of revenuebecause of the existing system. Based on a study, the civic body willrationalise and revise property tax rates.

Property tax is around 30 per cent of the total revenue of the civicbody. The increase in property tax collection is likely to result in a risein per capita capital expenditure. Chennai spends less than Rs. 2000per resident, much lower compared to developed cities.
