Do’s and dont’s for safehandling of crackers

During Deepavali celebrations children get injured due to carelesshandling of fireworks. Parents are indirectly responsible for theseaccidents as they fail to educated and guide the children on the correctways of handling fireworks.

The Loss Prevention Association of India Ltd. (LPA), for the past fewyears, has been guiding children and elders on the proper ways ofhandling fireworks.

Simple rules of safety as described in the Safety Bulletin of the LossPrevention Association are as follows:

Don’t light crackers inside the house, or light candles and oil lampsnear curtains or any other combustible material.

Hold sparklers away from the body.Light rockets pointing them straight up.Never light fireworks from balconies or near buildings: use open

grounds.Don’t bend over fireworks while lighting them: light them from the

side.Don’t wear long, loose, thin flowing dresses while playing with fire-

works.Never put fireworks in pockets.Never light fireworks under confinement in a metal container.Never light a flower pot by holding it.Never store fireworks or unpack them near a flame or a heat source.Never return to a firework once lit – it may explode in your face.Pour water over burns and go to a doctor. Don’t apply ointment,

butter or any oily substance.Show concern for infants, the aged and the sick. Don’t light loud

crackers near them.

Guard your eyes against damagewhen you burst crackersBy Dr. Vasumathy Vedantham

The incidence of fireworks-related injuries during Diwali is increasingeach year. The hands (40%), eyes (20%), and the head and face (20%)are the body areas most often involved.

Of these, eye injuries are the most sensitive and difficult to cure andcan often lead to complete loss of vision.

Lacerations, chemical injuries and embedding of foreign bodies arethe most common injuries to the eye from fireworks, with approxi-mately one third of the injuries resulting in permanent blindness.

Precautions to be taken:1. Wear eye protection such as plain glass that covers the eyes up

to the eyebrows while bursting crackers or watching fireworks.2. Stock a first aid kit with a rigid eye shield and antibiotic eye drops.

It is available in medical shops.3. Ensure that children are allowed to fire crackers only under adult

supervision.4. Check the area before igniting fireworks and remove any flam-

mable and combustible materials.5. Always have a bucket of water at hand to extinguish any incipient

fire or for rinsing the affected area of the body.6. Follow all safety precautions mentioned in the packet of the

firework.7. Use a thick agarbathi (incense stick), specially made for firing

crackers to ignite fireworks. It burns without an open flame, providesa safer distance between your hands and the fireworks and also makesthe wick to ignite slowly thereby giving you time to move away beforethe firework bursts.

8. Do not treat even minor eye injury as harmless. When in doubt, consult an eye doctor immediately.

Chemical burns to the eye:Following fall of chemicals into the eyes especially when rubbing eyes

after touching crackers or gun powders, symptoms such as pain, sensitivity to light, severe watering of eyes, reddened eyeballs, andswollen eyelids can occur.

It is advisable to wash hands properly before handling the patient’seye.

Open the affected eyelids gently with your fingers.Check if the eyeballs are intact or if there is a perforating injury with

collapse of eyeballs. If the eye ball is intact, flush the eye gently cool running cool water

to help clean and cool the eye and prevent further chemical reaction. The best way to do it is to hold the eye under a shower, or pour waterinto the eye using a clean container. Keep the eye open and as wide foras long as possible while flushing with water. Continue flushing for atleast 15 minutes.

Do not bandage the eye but apply a shield to it.Take the patient to an eye doctor immediately after the first aid

treatment. As a general rule, in cases of severe pain, reduced vision, or discolora-

tion (black eye), following a cracker injury, seek emergency medicalcare. Any of these symptoms could mean internal eye damage andmight need emergency intervention for preservation of vision loss.

YKNO HOLDS BARRED

VICTORIA HOSTELA write up in one of the three English dailies which are

a part of my menu took me back a half century with thepervasive smelly Buckingham Canal in between to 1952when I was a student of Presidency College and wasstaying in the Victoria Hostel.

The great Marina beach, which had not become a topnotch burial ground then, was a perfect setting for a broad-minded life filled with ozone. Bus wars might have hap-pened in other continents but not in my Presidency filledwith pretty classmates and English lecturers, one ofwhom, after a great career as Assistant Professor, mar-ried an Assamese tea planter and settled in Guwahati butpursued her love for teachingg. After many years asProfessor, she retired as Principal of a college when Lakshmiand I visited her. She died a few months ago

leaving the world to darkness and to me. A few monthsbefore her passing, when she was in Bangalore, she phonedus. Since we were in Bangalore we met her, not imaginingthat it would be our last meeting.

Victoria has revived memories of things past. It tweaksto mind the abominable pain I suffered in the last year ofmy stay there at the topmost floor. Also, a couple of daysbefore my Malayalam examination for my B.A, my rightarm got dislocated and and I, in mad desperation, collectedall the 18 text books and threw them all down from the thirdfloor. Retrieval team of friends could not find even one ofthem the next day. The finders must have made a beelineto the Moore Market.

The final examination was at the Pachaiyappa’s Collegein the afternoon of a salubrious summer in the midst of a109 degree heat in a hall of the college which sported acorrugated iron roof. To make us feel even more comfort-able, the hall had no fans. Two months later, when theresults came, I was surprised to see my number in thenewspaper. The mark list surprised me even more becauseI had, with an injured arm and bookless in 109 degrees heathad scored the 35% required for a pass. THANK YOU,Victoria.

By Our Staff ReporterThe unexpected and inces-

sant rainfall from 11 a.m onOct. 17 threw the city out ofgear. According to ChennaiRegional Meteorological De-partment, the city recorded atotal rainfall of 16.19 cm in a34-hour period. The Depart-ment has forecast that rainswill continue for the next 48hours and the maximum tem-perature will be around 32 de-gree Celsius.

Several roads in the neigh-bourhood were inundated caus-ing traffic jams.

The rains however broughtcheer to a city which has beenreeling under relatively hotconditions for the time of theyear and with dipping ground-water levels.

T. Nagar became a night-mare for Deepavali shoppersas congestion increased follow-

Sudden showers throw city out of gear

ing the rain. Water stagnationalong the roadsides ofThyagaraya Road made it im-possible to park two-wheelersthere, adding to the chaos.

Vehicles plying towardsAshok Pillar from T. Nagarwere diverted after an MTCbus got stuck in the Duraisamysubway. Vehicles were di-

verted towards North Usmanroad, which further jammed thestretch. Parts of Ashok NagarMain Road, Kodambakkam, were also submerged.

RPF intensifies check on passengersOn account of Deepavali,

Mambalam Railway Protec-tion Force has intensifiedchecking of baggage to catchpassengers traveling withcrackers on train. According toan official, carrying crackersand any inflammable items inmoving trains, including sub-urban trains, is not only dan-gerous, but is also an offense.

To manage the ongoing festi-val rush, RPF assistancebooths have been set up at thestation. Apart from CCTVcameras, a tower has beenerected at the foot over-bridgeto monitor crowds.

By Dr. K. A. VijayaraghavanKids start firing crackers and

sparklers a week beforeDeepavali and this continuesupto Karthigai Deepam.

During this cracker season, your pets get frightened of thesounds, and tend to take shelterunder the cots in dark rooms.

Some dogs are so cared ofthese sounds that they do noteven come out for answeringnature’s calls, and some evengo off during the Deepavaliseason. Is it not a pity that, when you and your family areenjoying the lights and sounds, your pets should spend theirtime in isolation and indarkness?

It is possible for you to trainyour dog also to enjoy the lightsand sounds, and also the goodfood during this festival season.

The best approach will be tohold the dog and make it watchwhile the sparklers andcrackers go on, so that it will

Train your dog to enjoy Deepavalislowly cast off the fear for them.Do not at all allow it to go underthe cot. Your holding it will helpthe dog give up its feargradually.

This is very much like trainingyour pet dog to walk on theroad. If your pet had beenmostly an indoor dog and if youtake it out on the road all onsudden it will get scared of thevehicles and the crowd on theroad. If you take it out for shortdistances regularly, it will castoff the fear and start walkingboldly on the road.

So, what is needed is agradual exposure of your petdog to the lights and soundsassociated with Deepavali.

Do not feed your dog with toomany sweets during theseason. After giving a sweet ortwo, give it a raw carrot so thatits teeth will get cleaned. If thedog allows it, clean its teethwith vinegar after it hasconsumed some sweets.
