A n exciting partnership between Blackpool
and The Fylde College (B&FC) and Lytham
St Annes Technology and Performing Arts College
(LSA), means that South Fylde now has its very
own sixth form college.
The new facility, which opened in September 2015,
provides high achieving school leavers with a
genuine college experience and a choice of either
A levels or level 3 Extended Diplomas, as a route
through to university and graduate careers.
Lytham Sixth Form College offers the best of
both worlds: all the experience of a traditional A
level provider (LSA) together with the vocational
expertise of an Ofsted Grade 1 Outstanding
provider (B&FC).
That’s great news for students, since they will
benefit from a unique learning experience designed
to equip them equally for the academic rigours of
university and multi-dimensional graduate careers.

FIND YOUREXTENDED DIPLOMA OR A LEVEL COURSE
L ytham Sixth Form College offers high-achieving
school leavers the opportunity to study ‘three
A level equivalent’ Extended Diplomas or the
facilitating A levels that gain entrance to the highest
achieving universities and graduate careers.
Just like A levels, level 3 Extended Diplomas carry
the maximum possible 420 UCAS points to gain
you entry to university. They are generally more
vocational and assignment based than A levels but
equally valued by universities and employers alike.
The broad academic and technical and professional
provision available at Lytham Sixth Form College
means we are able to accommodate the full range
of needs, aspirations and abilities of school leavers
within the local community.
A broad curriculum portfolio will align to priorities
such as Science, Technology, Engineering and
Maths (STEM) and the fiercely competitive entry
requirements of the top UK universities. In
addition, students will work together on
undergraduate themes in preparation for

ART AND DESIGNThis exciting, varied and practical
course is aimed at those who want
a career in art, art teaching, theatre

design, fine art or sculpture.
Covering a wide range of art and
design disciplines, students will
learn how to approach the creative
process to work through design
briefs, while developing the skills
and portfolio needed to achieve their
professional goals.

CPLD IN EARLY YEARS TEACHING (NATIONAL DIPLOMA)This Children’s Play, Learning and
Development (CPLD) programme
features a variety of core and
specialist modules, including Child
Development, Supporting Children’s
Language and Literacy, Safeguarding,
and Reflective Practice, which provide
the relevant occupational competence
required to be early years educators
or to become an early years teacher.
This programme has a requirement
of 750 hours in placement to develop
practice in the sector.

ARTThis A level provides the ideal
springboard to a wide variety
of related courses and careers,
including: scientific illustration;
fashion; sculpture/3D design; general
illustration; fine art; and other visual
related studies in film, animation and
design. At the start of the course
students take part in teacher-led
practical creative tasks based around
a generic starting point or theme.
All students then develop their own
personalised responses leading to a
finished piece of artwork. The initial
introduction of new formal practical
skills provides the basis for creative
exploration and development in a
diversity of media and genres to
establish a unique signature style.

equivalent full Level 2 qualification,

BIOLOGYA Biology A level can lead to a variety
of careers, among them medicine,
veterinary medicine, dentistry,
physiotherapy, nursing, forensic
science, biochemistry, genetics, marine
biology, horticulture and zoology.
Through a variety of learning styles
(group discussions, presentations, role
plays, research and practical laboratory
work) you will develop knowledge and

of science. Our two-year programme

CHEMISTRYThis two-year A level programme is
ideal for those students wanting to
pursue a career in chemistry-related
areas such as medicine, veterinary
medicine, dentistry, forensic science,
biochemistry, chemical engineering and
industrial chemistry. Through a variety
of teaching methods that include
group discussions, presentations,
role plays, research and practical
laboratory work, you will focus on the
following units of study: Chemistry
in Action; Investigative and Practical
Skills; Kinetics, Equilibria and Organic
Chemistry; Energetics, Redox and
Inorganic Chemistry; Investigative and
Practical Skills. Successful students
will be eligible to progress to a related
undergraduate course at one of several
universities across the UK.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATUREThis course encourages students to
develop their understanding of English
Language and English Literature as

major literary genres – prose, poetry
and drama – along with a range of
non-literary texts will hone students’
ability to write for different audiences
and purposes. Those planning to

HISTORYA History A level develops the skills of
analysis and judgement, which allows
students to gain confidence in writing
and speaking persuasively. It also
develops key research skills, along with
an understanding of the media and
its influential role in society. All these
skills are highly relevant to university
study and to the contemporary work
environment. On this course, a varied
curriculum brought to life through
fascinating trips and visits, focuses
predominantly on Early Modern History,
specifically Britain and Europe in the
seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
There is also the opportunity to
independently investigate a period of
change in Modern History.

LAWThe study of law develops students’
ability to structure arguments
effectively and to interpret theoretical
evidence so as to apply it to practical
situations. In this programme,

areas of study: Understanding Legal
Values, Structures and Processes;
Understanding Legal Reasoning,
Personnel and Methods; Criminal
Law; Understanding Substantive Law;
Understanding Law in Context. A law
qualification is directly relevant to the
legal profession and especially for those
looking to become Legal Executives,
Criminologists, Solicitors or Barristers;
however, it can also prove beneficial
for careers in media and journalism,
the Civil Service, business and
administration, management
and politics.

on Core Mathematics, with applied
subjects also being studied: Statistics
in Year 1 and Mechanics in Year 2.
Upon successful completion, students
would be eligible to apply for a place
at university where they could either
continue their study of Mathematics or
channel their aptitude for the abstract
towards one of the following disciplines:
the sciences, engineering, economics,
medicine, business and accountancy,
computing or management.

FURTHER MATHEMATICSWith highly developed analytical and
problem-solving skills, mathematicians

business. This one-year AS programme

study: Complex Numbers; Matrices;

MEDIA STUDIESMedia graduates have highly developed
communication skills, particularly
beneficial for careers based in PR
consultancies, communications
agencies, marketing organisations and
media companies, but also in local and
central government and within colleges
and universities. Our Media Studies A
level is excellent preparation for a host
of related undergraduate programmes,
allowing students to develop a thorough
understanding of the contemporary
media landscape. The course begins
with an exploration of the various
aspects of television, advertising and
lifestyle texts but as it progresses,
students are encouraged to research
particular enthusiasms, for example
the video-games industry or issues
connected to social networking.

MUSICMusic is a highly regarded academic
subject, developing a variety of skills
not just prized within music careers,

On this course, students will develop
performance skills, compose music
and learn about harmony while honing
their aural and analytical skills by
studying selections from the ‘New
Anthology of Music’ and wider listening.
Obvious career routes (via university)
include: Music Therapist; Musician;

School Teacher however the following
roles would also suit graduates of

PERFORMING ARTS DIPLOMA WITH A LEVELSOur Performing Arts Diploma is
equivalent to two A levels and must
be studied alongside other A levels.
A total of 12 units are based around
the following areas: Devised Drama;
Scripted Performance; Movement; and
The Performing Arts Business. Teaching
comprises a series of workshops
and vocational sessions designed
to help students hone their skills as
professional performers as well as
develop links in the performing arts
community. This Diploma, coupled with
your choice of accompanying A levels
will be excellent preparation for related
study at university along with a variety
of stage, TV and film work.

A* - C or an equivalent full Level 2

PHILOSOPHY AND ETHICS (RELIGIOUS STUDIES)This fascinating course is an excellent
preparation for a wide range of arts
and social science degrees and is fully
recognised as an academic qualification
by all universities. With a natural
emphasis on the development of
critical thinking, debating, researching
and presenting skills, the study of
Philosophy can lead to rewarding
careers in areas such as law, teaching,
management, business administration,

technology is based on the principles

Quantum Phenomena and Electricity;
Mechanics, Materials and Waves; Fields
and Further Mechanics; Nuclear and
Thermal Physics; and Turning Points
in Physics. There is an emphasis on
solving mathematical problems, leading

PSYCHOLOGYPsychology is the fascinating scientific
study of behaviour. Students will
explore how people interact, how we
change and develop, how we think,
how the nervous system works, how we
differ from animals and how we decide
what is normal. In doing so, they will
develop their ability to think critically
and analytically, further develop both
their oral and communication skills,
and their ability to plan statistically
viable experiments. A level Psychology
can open up a range of careers and
undergraduate courses in psychology,
the social sciences, neuroscience
and media studies. Popular career
choices include social work, clinical
or educational psychology, research,
teaching and the media.

THEATRE STUDIESThis highly practical course has
enabled past students to progress to
undergraduate courses in acting, stage
management, media, English and
drama therapy, with other students
having progressed to actor training at
leading drama schools. There is also the
option of progressing to specialist arts
therapist, teacher or theatre technician
training. The course combines practical
workshops (with the teacher as
director) with research and discussion
style seminars. Learning mostly
comprises a live theatre production,
prescribed plays and excerpt
performances in front of an external
examiner. Potential students need
to be aware that this course involves
a demanding extra-curricular
rehearsal schedule.
Entry Requirements
In order to study this A level programme
students must gain 5 GCSEs at grades
A* - C or an equivalent full Level 2
qualification, including English
Language or Maths and a grade B
or Merit in an Art subject.
