Children of Bauhaus ideas, the Ly-

rois chairs celebrate a rendezvouswith their occupants in a conversati-on between art and design.

German artist and designer Alex-ander Becker claims to have rein-vented the chair, announcing therelease o a custom urniture line ochairs, built entirely rom a set o -gures he drew years ago and keptalive ever since. Each chair is madeup o the silhouette o a human sha-pe, which happens to lend itselperectly to carrying the seat.

Chairs. Not exactly sexy. Most peo-ple dont even think about chairs.

Now, with the notion o the envi-ronment infuencing the individualbecoming common sense and sty-le, theres a growing tendency ochoosing the meaningul over themindless. It works both ways, sha-ping ones particular environmentbecomes an act o essential sel-expression.

An empty chair has never been aconversation starter, somethingwhich Alexander overcomes: Artand design are about interaction, having a seat in a chair that isntempty its carried by humanshapes ater all starts an ins-tant conversation, a ready-made

    rendezvous.

While the design world treasuresthe clean and rectangular lines o

the amous Bauhaus architectureand urniture pieces, this line o al-most organic shapes is infuenced inless-than-obvious ways: I see theLyrois chairs in direct successiono the Bauhaus chairs, created

by designers, cross-pollinatingconcepts rom seemingly unrela-ted felds and orging somethingnew, expands Alexander Becker, notorious in his treatment o the Ly-rois gures, this time going three-dimensional, crossing-over rom artto design and vice versa.

The production is set up as a mic-ro-manuacturing project, eaturinga series o eight chairs: A coupleo lounge chairs, a directors chair,a bench, and a bar stool, allbuilt around, o course, the Lyroisshapes.

The micro-manuacturing part is aselegant as the chairs themselves.Nothing but the showroom modelsare built or ware-housed until theyare ordered. This allows or wide-ranging customizations or custo-mers who absolutely need speciccorporate colors or matching ma-terials. The shapes are xed as this

is what makes an original Lyrois, something the artist insists uponbeing non-negotiable even regar-ding his own, uture works.

The chairs project is uniquely split in two branches, there is one high-class furniture line in heavy wood

and a second, art-object line of

chairs in 25% scale, stage props and collectors items, sculptures in translucent and colored acrylicglass.

    About tHe Artist

In 1997, Alexander Becker drew abunch o shapes, 17 gures gathe-red around the silhouette o a dan-cer. Since then, they come back,

year ater year, in always dierentstyles and patterns, covering bagsand wallpapers, populating storewalls and windows, as well as beingeatured on tiny vinyl stickers andcut as huge decals or tableaux; ela-borate arrangements on industrialmaterials. Repetition changes.

Lyrois is an art scheme, an experi-mental brand, and a design meme inthe making. Lyrois sounds similar tothe rench Le Roi, yet it is otherwiseunrelated. The shapes are sampled, over and over, with the techniquesdu jour, and the materials we con-temporarily love; bright, opaque,or translucent vinyl, bullet-resistantPlexiglas, hi-tech paper, and indus-trial adhesive oil.

    Im an experienced designer, a no-torious artist, a curious entrepre-neur, a chaos-specialist, and the

mastermind and sometimes alterego o Lyrois. Im involved in designand art or 15+ years. I sell designand production services and priva-tely commissioned art as in logo-types, web- and print projects, andthose shapes you see all over myplaces. Alternating and escalatingbetween design, art, and business

keeps input and output levels up,also artistic creation is a productiveway o staying sane. Still curious?
