Dearest readers;
I would like to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to read my small (and somewhat insignificant) magazine.
I do not know what you are hoping to gain from this experience, but if for five minutes you can ogle at the cuteness, learn something new and admit joy into the universe, I know I have done my job.
Enjoy the issue

The brainchild of 26-year-old Brighton born singer/songwriter Mike Rosenberg, Passenger is redefining the definition of folk poet in the 21st century. Formerly a five-piece band, Passenger has returned to his roots, bringing music to the streets of many countries including Australia, America and the United Kingdom. A classic journeyman musician, cut from the same mould as Emylou Harris, Syd Barrett and John Prine, Passenger has the unique ability to move from witty to woeful with every song. After six months spent circling the UK with his debut album Wicked Man’s Rest, Passenger drastically stripped back his sound to produce the second studio album; Wide Eyes Blind Love, which was exposed to the public as it was created: on the road. Setting up on street corners across the UK and Australia, Passenger halted passers-by in their hundreds; all connecting to t h e e u p h o n i c t o n e s a n d powerfully composed lyrics
pouring from this lone figure armed with nothing but his g u i t a r. T h i s i s m u s i c a s Rosenberg intends it to be, unvarnished and honest, just pure talent and powerful tunes that affix directly to the crowd’s i n d i v i d u a l t h o u g h t s a n d f e e l i n g s . S t r u c k b y t h e undeniable freedom of the busking life style, Passenger developed the grass roots method of Wide Eyes Blind Love into the germ of a new album. Impressively and entirely funded by monies pooled from b u s k i n g , M i k e s e t a b o u t r e c o r d i n g a s e r i e s o f collaborations with musical friends he met along the way. Flight of the Crow is the exceptional result of Passenger’s fearless journey, with Australian artists such as Josh Pyke, Matt Corby, Boy & Bear and Kate Miller Heidke, lending their voices to the most intriguing unanticipated creative project of 2010. Following the small success of Flight Of The Crow, Passenger released the chart-
topping, multiplatinum album All The Little Lights in July of 2012 . Ful l o f melancholy quirkiness and cascading lyrics, the single Let Her Go went to #1 in multiple countries almost overnight. Due to Rosenberg’s musical palette being sufficiently broad, his folk like lyrics and musical component quickly became the ‘norm’ for the new wave of wispy, whimsical folk-pop. The fourth and latest studio album, Whispers (released June 2014) was recorded in the same studio as previous Passenger works, with similar assortment of contributing members. The charm that made those records glow still exists in spades, b l o o m i n g o n t h e vibrant Thunder and haunting on the sombre Golden Leaves. Both beautifully written and s u n g , W h i s p e r s u s e s a n assortment of instruments and backing vocals to produce a soothing yet painfully honest record, from one of Brittan’s best vocalists. □

Where does the name “Vancouver Sleep Clinic” come from?
When writing for this project I wanted to tie all the songs together with a sleepy & relaxing vibe that I was hoping could help people to relax or perhaps even sleep. I personally struggle to sleep without a playlist of beautiful music! So that’s the ‘Sleep Clinic ‘part, and I tried a lot of different city names before it and Vancouver just had a really nice ring to it – and is also a beautiful city which helps paint a picture I think!
What i s your a l l - t ime favor i te Vancouver Sleep Clinic song?
Vapour was the first song I’d written for the project, and a lot of it was done in my bedroom – so I guess that will always have the strongest significance to the success of VSC. The lyrics mean a lot to me as well.
What is the story behind that song?
Basically it was written in a time when I was thinking about a lot of things. I struggled to find a home with people and things around me, so I had spent a lot of time alone in my bedroom writing and translating a lot of different thought processes I was going through onto paper. Vapour delves deep into these thoughts and discusses the short life that we have here and my struggle with finding a home around me. I personally think there’s so much more to live for than worldly possession or personal gain, and this song is about that.
Who / what inspire you to make music?
So many different artists and styles of music! My dad has played The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac records to me since I was around 3, but I suppose the turning point when I decided ‘this is what I love to do’ was when I discovered the likes of Sigur Ros, Mogwai & This Will Destroy You. Post-rock bands really helped me to see the beauty in music and unveil the copious amounts of creativity and exploration you can use when searching for a sound.
What’s coming up for Vancouver Sleep Clinic for the rest of the year?
It’s a super exciting time for this project! We’ve just put out the debut EP titled ‘Winter’ which has had a surprisingly generous response. I’m now busy writing for a record which I hope will be really special. A lot of awesome touring opportunities are coming up as well which I can’t wait to share! Loving every minute of this journey. □
