In 2010, Lyon Rural Electric Cooperative began collecting an EEAC to implement its Energy Efficiency Program as filed with Iowa Utility Board. This plan was required by legislation passed by the Iowa Legislature. Each year the EEAC will be recalculated by first looking at the amount collected in the previous year (2016) compared with amount paid out for program expenses for that year (2016). The under collection or over collection will be added to or deducted respectively from the estimated expenditures needed to meet the program goals for 2017. Based on these calculations, the 2017 EEAC will be as follows: Farm and Residential 1.36% Small Commercial 0.72% Large Commercial 0.72% Novartis Animal Health 0.00% Public Buildings 0.00% Casino Resort 0.00% Electric Heat / Dual Fuel 1.36% Lyon REC News February 2017 Phone : 712-472-2506 or 1-800-658-3976 ~ Website : www.lyonrec.coop Office Hours : Monday thru Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 2017 Power Cost Adjustment (PCA) Lyon Rural Electric Cooperative has used a PCA to adjust its rates to reflect the changes in the cost of the power it purchases from L & O Power Cooperative (L & O). L & O purchases bulk power from the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) and Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Basin Electric). Basin Electric rates will remain the same rate after a mid-year rate increase and WAPA rates will decrease for 2017. In the December 2016 newsletter, I provided estimated PCA rates for 2017. The PCA rates for 2017 have been calculated. The 2017 PCA rate for regular energy will be $0.03711 per kWh compared to the current 2016 PCA of $0.03899 per kWh. The Farm and Residential Rate cost for 1,000 kWh will be $1.88 less in 2017 over 2016 costs after the mid-year rate increase. The Base Year or year this calculation is based on was 2006. There will be no change in the PCA rate for the dual fuel and electric heat rate in 2017. The 2017 PCA for dual fuel and electric heat will be $0.01450 per kWh. The Base Year is 2006. The 2017 PCA rate for energy used in the Casino Resort rate will be $0.02574 compared to the current 2016 PCA of $0.02648. The cost for 1,000 kWh will be $0.74 less in 2017 over current 2016 costs. Beware of cheapphone chargers

When inspectors from UL-Underwriters Laboratories-tested iPhone chargers for safety, the results, they said, were “literally shocking.”

UL calls power adapters sold for iPhones but not made by Apple “counterfeit” and warns that they might not have undergone electrical safety tests and can shock or even kill the user.

In a 2016 UL test of 400 counterfeit adapters, 99 percent of them failed. That means they either became damaged themselves or harmed the phones during charging, or leaked current that shocked or could have shocked the user.

The counterfeit chargers came with the UL safety inspection mark printed on them, but they had not been UL tested, the report noted. Some of the chargers cost as little as $1, while Apple prices on its “official” adapters start at $19.

While counterfeit adapters can look just like legitimate Apple chargers, they usually have a few “tells,” UL reported. For example:

• All UL-certified Apple chargers are white.

• Certification labels on genuine Apple labels do not misspell words or names-like “Abble,” for example, and say the product was designed by Apple and not by any other organization.

• Expect to pay at least $19 for a properly tested Apple adapter.

• If you find a charger loose in a bin of discounted electronics, it’s counterfeit. Apple products come in white Apple packaging.

Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Area Development Group (IADG), on behalf of Iowa’s rural electric cooperatives, municipal utilities and independent telecommunication companies, honored seven distinguished Iowa companies with the Iowa Venture Award at a luncheon held in conjunction with the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives’ annual meeting at the Sheraton West Des Moines.

Mogler Farms/Pig Hill West of Alvord

Mogler Farms is being recognized for their over $12 million state-of-the-art sow facility that incorporates the latest advances in pathogen filter technology. Bio-security, disease control, and herd health are equal priorities for the Mogler’s. They have a 4,400 sow herd that produces 11,000 baby pigs per month. Mogler Farms has incorporated advances for sow farrowing and lactation and they also have constructed on-site nurseries that keep the piglets for 18 days or up to 25 pounds before they are sent to wean and finishing facilities. Mogler Farms/Pig Hill West was nominated for the Iowa Venture Award by Lyon Rural Electric Cooperative.

“The Iowa Venture Awards Luncheon provides a forum to celebrate the courage, contribution, innovation responsibility and vision of Iowa entrepreneurs,” said IADG President Rand Fisher. “IADG, on behalf of our sponsors, is proud to recognize these seven outstanding companies for their contribution to their community, region and state.”

Five additional businesses were recognized with an Iowa Venture Award for their significant contributions in diversifying and strengthening Iowa’s economy. These 2016 Iowa Venture Award recipients include: Bratney Companies of Marshalltown; Christensen Farms & Feedlots, Inc. of Garner; Concrete Machinery Inc. of Iowa in Paton; Great Lakes Communication Corp. of Spencer; and Maassen Dairy Farms of Maurice. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Bill Northey, assisted in presenting the Iowa Venture Awards and honoring the Iowa companies and their leaders.

The 2016 “Outstanding Business of the Year” Iowa Venture Award was presented to Iowa Fertilizer, located in rural Lee County, near Wever, Iowa. Iowa Fertilizer is historic in many ways, including being the state’s largest single-site construction project spanning 500 acres with capital investment of $2 billion.

For 29 years, IADG has presented Iowa Venture Awards to individuals and organizations, both large and small, in recognition of their significant contributions to Iowa’s economy through entrepreneurial leadership, innovation and the creation of job opportunities. History has demonstrated that these are among the most accomplished and successful companies in the state. Together they are helping to sustain and grow Iowa’s economy. The Iowa Venture Award Hall of Fame showcasing these 248 companies can be found at www.IADG.com/HallOfFame .

IADG is the business and community development leader for Iowa’s rural electric cooperatives, municipal utilities and independent telecommunication companies. Since 1985, the Powerful Partnerships and economic development efforts of IADG and their sponsors have assisted with more than 2,000 projects, generating in excess of $10.15 billion of capital investment and over 51,500 new or retained jobs for Iowa.
