Message from the Headmaster

Lynnhaven Academy started in 2011 in the basement of an insurance company with a handful of students and a vision for a new kind of education. An intimate, first-rate, individualized academic experience with high learning expectations.

Lynnhaven was created to be a place where students could learn how to learn and succeed, both in and out of the classroom through experiential learning.

Over the years, Lynnhaven Academy has grown, expanded its facilities and reach, but it has never strayed from its core mission. We understand that not every student has had an unending string of successes in his or her learning career – that failure is actually an important part of the process that ultimately creates success. We help bright students learn that recognizing and rising above their individual challenges is ultimately the key to their success.

Our commitment is to preparing students for success in college and throughout their academic career and to challenge them to become exemplary citizens of a changing global society. Thank you,

Lynnhaven Academy faculty, staff and board of directors believe

that it is important to adopt a learning model that can benefit

all students who enter the school. In order to provide a rigorous

college preparatory curriculum for our students, we believe that

students should master the material they learn in and outside

the classroom. Too often students are moved through a curriculum

without mastering smaller units of study, thus causing them to get

further behind their peers. It is also equally essential for students to

masterfully anchor what they’ve learned in the classroom through

meaningful experiential learning activities. These two methods

of “mastery learning” is based on Benjamin Bloom’s Learning

for Mastery model. According to Bloom, mastery learning is

predominantly a group-based, teacher-paced instructional

approach, in which students learn by cooperating with their

classmates. Mastery learning does not focus on content, but on the

process of mastering it. This type of learning works best with the

traditional content-focused curriculum, one based on well-defined

learning objectives organized into smaller, sequentially organized

units.

“I HEAR AND I FORGET. I SEE AND I REMEMBER. I DO AND I UNDERSTAND.” - CONFUCIUS

We believe students are active

creators of their own knowledge.

Our teachers help facilitate and

cultivate this by asking big picture

and critical thinking questions,

guide them to explore the main

ideas and central themes, and

assess what they know. We aim to encourage students to use active

techniques (experiments, real-world problem solving) to create more

knowledge and then to reflect on and talk about what they are doing and

how their understanding is changing.

“Lynnhaven has had a major positive impact in my life. It has allowed me

to refine my attitude, pursue inquires of my interest, and enjoy it all

along the way.”
