2012-2013 Lake Washington Schools Foundation Report to the Community

New ways of doing things require new resources…Lake Washington School District is striving to implement programs for our students that are far beyond basic. That is why we look to our community partners, like the Lake Washington Schools Foundation, for financial support.

— Lake Washington School District Superintendent, Dr. Traci Pierce

“ “

OUR MISSIONLake Washington Schools Foundation raises funds to support academic excellence and success for all students in the Lake Washington School District.

OUR VISIONEach student in the Lake Washington School District will receive an education that ensures their future success. In doing so, we sustain economic vitality and enrich our community’s quality of life.

Our Funding Priorities• Equal access to educational opportunities• Future-ready skills• Quality teaching and leadership

Dear friend of Lake Washington Schools Foundation, Thank you for being part of our foundation community that wants every student to achieve their full potential. Engaging, challenging and providing extra support to students takes resources, and your

fundraising to the max, and we were able to grant the school district the largest amount in our history.

With Your Help…In 2012-2013, Lake Washington Schools Foundation was able to:

• Invest over $437,000 in classrooms across the school district, our largest amount ever,

• Grant $225,000, to help launch the STEM-based Signature Programs, providing real-world experience in science, technology, engineering and math,

• Help high school students stay on track to graduation with summer school.

This year, high school students are tackling challenges in the Signature Program classes that you learned about and helped to fund at last year’s Legacy for Learning luncheon. We look forward to collaborating with the school district to bring similar experiences to elementary and middle school students across the district.

We are delighted to introduce Kristina Williams, who has joined our team as executive director. Kristina invites you to ask her how you can invest in, volunteer or connect with the foundation.

education will result in a stronger community and brighter future. We look forward to what we can accomplish together this year.

With gratitude,

Peg HuntBoard President

Students at Mead Elementary can practice math at their own pace at school or at home.Reaching for Success Grants We love the IXL online math program and how it supports our goals of a family dedicated to learning. Our third grader has done over 15,000 math problems. We like that she can practice a topic in-depth to understand it fully.”

— Nina S., Mead Elementary parent

7,247 students benefitted from 30 grants at 22 schools

Reaching for Success grants allow teachers to develop innovative projects that engage students and provide extra learning opportunities. Recent grants have funded: online math practice, robotics, summer reading, kindergarten readiness programs, laboratory materials and musical instruments.

A Finn Hill Middle School student received an alarm clock to help her get to school on time. The Access Fund

The perception is that everyone in our area is well off. But that’s not the case. We also have students who don’t want to admit that they’re not as well off as their friends.”

— Ellen Zambrowsky-Huls, Redmond High School counselor

1,111 students benefitted at 13 schools on 1,827 occasions

The Access Fund enables low-income middle and high school students to get the most out of school by providing small scholarships to pay for school-related expenses. School staff identifies and immediately respond to students’ needs. Last year, the fund helped students pay for: lab, art and sports fees, field trips, SAT test registration, senior caps and gowns and more.

A Redmond High School student raised her biology grade from an “F” to an “A” and is more confident in the class.LINKS - Looking Into the Needs of Kids and Schools

This student has always been an incredibly hard worker, but biology was a big challenge. The concepts were difficult and her ability to read the material and comprehend it was low. With the support of her LINKS tutor, she is more confident and comfortable with biology.”

— Caitlin Bank, Redmond High School biology teacher

In 2012-2013, LINKS volunteers mentored or tutored 8% more students than in the previous year.

892 students were matched with 294 volunteers who donated 6,845 volunteer hours.

LINKS is a district-wide volunteer mentoring program that matches at-risk students with caring adults to enhance the children’s academic, social and emotional development. Volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and include business people, parents, high school students and retirees.

Juanita High School students developed their research skills by responding to a simulated tuberculosis outbreak. STEM Programs

I like the problem-solving we get to do in this class. For example, when we diagnose a ‘patient,’ there are so many factors to consider.”

— Juanita High School Signature Program student

300 STEM High School students tackled real-world problems through thematic, interdisciplinary instruction

Foundation grants helped launch the new STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) High School and STEM-based high school Signature Programs, cornerstones of a district-wide effort to develop STEM education and project-based learning. In these programs, students investigate, innovate and think critically while solving real-world problems. Internships with business partners such as EvergreenHealth and Genie/Terex connect students to careers and STEM professionals.
