Dear Meeting Planner:On behalf of Lviv City Council, I would like to thank you for your interest in Lviv.Lviv is not called Europe’s Last Hidden Gem for no reason. It is a city steeped in architectural splendor and old world charm and an established cultural and scientific center. It is becoming a modern hub for business with a vibrant and youthful population of over 2,000,000 within its metropolitan area, many of whom are university students and future business leaders. The old world charm of the city center with its active Café Society is a

mix of locals connecting for business or pleasure and tourists relaxing over coffee or beer. But these are not reasons to consider Lviv for your meetings.Successful meetings take people out of their own environments and put them in creative think tanks to explore a new notion of reality and possibilities for a few short days, and send them back transformed. The Lviv Convention Bureau understands this and will help you plan meetings for successful outcomes. Lviv has a history of hosting international meetings, starting from the Galician National Exhibition in 1894 to the Presidential Summit for Central European Countries in 1999, and the successful UEFA European Championship 2012.Our new airport, 100’s of rooms in top-rated hotels, and unique and inspired venues can make a successful meeting much more memorable. Plus, we would love to have you here. Plan your next event in Lviv and discover for yourself the power of Ukrainian hospitality in 2016.

Sincerely, Andriy SadovyyMayor of Lviv

v The first...The first book in Ukraine

In 1574 in Lviv, Ivan Fedorov printed the first book in Ukraine — “Apostol” (“Apostle”) — 1,200 copies — a large number for that time. The first Ukrainian book was notable for its large size, variety and artistic polygraphic

representations.

The first brewery in Ukraine (1715)In the second half of 17th c., Count Stanislaw Potocki issued a decree, whereby the Jesuit monks were named owners of a large plot of land where they could build a brewery. The quality of the Lviv brewed beer

was strictly controlled by the Jesuit priests, so it was very flavorful and quickly gained popularity in the region and in the distant countries of Central Europe.

The first vaccine against epidemic typhusThe inventor of the first effective vaccine against epidemic typhus was Rudolf Weigl — a Polish biologist, graduate of Lviv University Biologic Faculty and a First World War military doctor. In 1918 Weigl

saved the lives of many people who were prisoners of war by giving them the vaccine against typhus. During his work Weigl was infected twice with typhus.

The first hotel in UkraineThe first hotel in Ukraine was opened in 1785 — “Pid Rymskym Tsezarem” (At the Roman Ceasar’s) by Lviv entrepreneur, Johann Preshel (presently the Museum of Ethnography). At the beginning of the 19th

c. the hotel was considered one of the most imposing stone constructions in the area.

The first oil lamp in the world It was invented by chemists, Johan Zeg and Ignatsy Lukesevyc in 1853. Their employer, the pharmacist Mikolias, encouraged them to extract alcohol spirit from oil. While

experimenting, the two researchers accidentally stumbled upon the cracking process used in petroleum chemistry. From that moment, paraffin oil became one of the most popular ways to provide light in inhabited areas. Even today it is still used by a third of the world’s population.

The first railway in UkraineThe first railway in Ukraine was built in 1861. In 1859 the first railway tracks were laid from Przemysl to Lviv, a distance of 97.6 km.The railway station was meant to be the hub for trains departing in four

different directions: to Krakow, Chernivtsi, Brody, and Pidvolochysk.

Lviv is an important city to the history of not only Ukraine, but Europe as well. It is the city of inventions, the city of important historical events and meetings. The intellectuals who lived in Lviv made its name sound bright and honorable. The first newspaper in Poland and Ukraine was issued here, the first football and hockey games in Ukraine were hosted here, the first Ukrainian university, city theater and post office were opened here. For many centuries Lviv has been and still is a scientific, cultural and tourist trendsetter for Ukraine.

This museum, situated in the beautiful Shevchenkivskyi Hai Park (Shevchenko’s Grove), was created in 1971 as of the largest open-air museums of its kind in all of Europe. Its aim is to preserve the wooden folk architecture, everyday life and art artifacts that depict daily routine, work and leisure of Western Ukrainian villages of the last three centuries.

Buildings include the folk architecture and authentic interiors of churches, huts, schools, windmills, oil manufacturing and pottery making buildings. A rich collection of clothing, furniture, musical instruments, ceramics, jewelry, religious icons and church accessories is featured throughout to give the visitors an authentic glimpse into the lifestyle of these bygone villagers.

Over 165,000 people visit this museum each year. Additionally, every weekend the museum offers workshops on traditional crafts such as blacksmithing, baking, pottery making, doll making and wood-carving. This is a rich visual and appealing overall experience, owing to the outdoor nature of the museum, the folk architecture, and all the individual accouterments used by people in these regions over the past 300 years.

Olesko Castle

Olesko Castle is probably the most famous castle of Lviv oblast, restored from a complete ruin. It has been a witness of the history of the region for more than six centuries. The castle was first mentioned in manuscripts in 1327. Its location on the border of Lithuania and Poland resulted in a constant struggle for the castle and a frequent change of ownership.

Olesko castle is well known not only in Ukrainian but also in Polish history because of the fact that King of Poland Jan III Sobieski was born there. During his reign the castle received the status of a royal residence.

In its subsequent history Olesko castle repeatedly suffered from destruction. The active restoration of the castle began only in the 1970s.

Nowadays, it belongs to Lviv Art Gallery. Its exhibition includes more than 1,500 items, such as the unique icon collection from 15th–18th centuries, the biggest wood sculpture collection of 14th–19th centuries, including Pinsel’s works, tapestries and furniture collection and paintings.

Pidhirtsi Castle

Pidhirtsi Castle is one of the best European examples of Renaissance palace bastion fortifications.

The palace is often called the ‘‘Polish Versailles’’.

The stone castle was founded in 1635 by Crown Hetman Stanislaw Konetspolskiy at the place of the old fortifications belonging to the Pidhoretski family. The park of Pidhirtsi belongs to the monuments of a landscape art of national importance.

The castle itself was designed by a famous architect Guillaume Levasseur de Beauplan in the middle of 17th century. The function of the castle is noted in a Latin inscription at the entrance to it: ‘‘Victory is the crown of martial efforts. Victory is triumph. Triumph is rest’’. It is for the rest of the crown hetman the castle in Pidhirtsy was built. Many of the European monarchs had been to the castle. Polish King Wladyslaw IV and Jan III Sobieski, the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, the German Kaiser Wilhelm were among them. In 1940 the State Museum was founded in the castle, the collection of which was robbed by Nazis. After the WWII, the structure of the castle was under the disposal of the Ministry of Health, and was turned into a tuberculosis hospital afterwards, while the remaining works of art were given to the Lviv Art Gallery.

Zolochiv Castle

Zolochiv Castle is one of the most important monuments of defense architecture on the territory of Galicia.

In 1634–1636 it was built by Jakub Sobieski, who was father to Jan Sobieski — the Polish King. In 1686 by order of King Jan III Sobieski the castle was renovated and decorated with works of art. Thus, a beautiful Renaissance ensemble of the castle is created by the Entrance Tower, the Chinese palace as well as the large palace residence building.

During the centuries the castle has served as a fortress, a royal residence and even as a jail and an

educational institution.

Nevertheless, the castle has remained without substantial losses until today.

At the courtyard of Zolochiv Castle the Grand Palace there is an exposition of the 17th century interiors and historical halls. The fad of the 18th century — the Chinese Palace which is one of the few examples of oriental architecture on Ukrainian land — is also preserved perfectly. Today, it exhibits the oriental culture of Japan, China, India, Egypt.

Zhovkva Castle

The architectural style of the castle built in 1594–1606 is the interweaving of the Renaissance andBaroque styles. King Jan III Sobieski liked Zhovkva Castle a lot and therefore, it served as the residence of King Jan.

In 1648 the castle was attacked by Cossacks, but after a large ransom the building remained intact. In 1655, when the attack was repeated, Zhovkva Castle was captured again.

At the beginning of the 18th century the castle served as the residence for Tsar Peter I, and was visited by Ukrainian Cossacs Hetman Ivan Mazepa. Today, at least half of the Zhovkva Castle building needs restoration. The other half of the building operats as a department of Lviv Art Gallery.

Svirzh Castle

The early references about the castle are found in the archives of 1530, when it belonged to noble family of Svirzhsky. But the current look of the

castle started to form in the middle of 17th century, since the ownership of Count Alexander Tcetnera. It is believed that the strengthening of Svirzh castle was conducted by a famous fortress architect, general of artillery Pawel Grodziski.

Despite its prime location for the defense the castle is situated on Mount Belz and was surrounded by impenetrable marshes, ponds, ditches and composite bridge at the foot of the walls), the palace style of its architecture could hardly have a serious defensive value. It is known that during the Ukrainian-Polish War of 1648–1654 the castle was gained by Cossack troops several times and in 1648 it was burned by the Tatars.

Stare Selo Castle

Stare Selo Castle (Old Village) is one of the largest castles in Ukraine which covers about 2 acres of area. It can also be called the strongest castle of Lviv, as it faced numerous enemy attacks remained unharmed after battles.

The castle was built in 1589. It had suffered from numerous military attacks and remained unharmed but in 1648, when it was attacked by Cossacks it was devastated. The following year the castle was restored. When in 1654 the army of Bohdan Khmelnytsky planned to attack Lviv it didn’t dare to attack the Old Village fortress. In 1672 the Turks attacked castles moving from one to another, but they didn’t manage to get the Old Village Castle as the fortress was too strong.

However, there is only defensive wall that survived till now.
