Major financial institutions in Singapore have started to seek new talent in the wealth management sector, reflecting the expected growth in the sector, according to Director of Robert Half International, Mr Tim Hird. However, talent in this field is so limited that many banks need to search outside the country to look for the best talent.
In a question and answer session on The Future of Asset and Wealth Management in Singapore organised by SMU's Sim Kee Boon lnstitute for Financial Economics, recently, Mr Hird said expectations for university graduates working in the wealth management sector has also changed since the financial crisis. "If 18 months ago, these university graduates want to work in big banks, now they are focussing on the leadership and finan- cial stability of financial institutions," explained Mr Hird in the session held at SMU.
The session was broadcast live via the Internet and was also attended by students from the London Business School via video conference.
It was chaired by Visiting (Practice) Associate Professor Bernard Lee, who is also the Deputy Director of the Sim Kee Boon lnstitute for Financial Economics and Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HedgeSPA.
Head of Private Wealth Management for Southeast Asia and Australia at Morgan Stanley, Ms Tan Su Shan, said she and her team are often visiting the world's leading universities to find the best talent to work at Morgan Stanley.
"We want to get those who are smart because competition in the wealth management sector is global in nature. For university graduates, we want to attract those who can speak well and have integrity," she said.
Asked if language skills are needed, Ms Tan said if the private banker's focus is on the China market, being able to converse in Mandarin is definitely essential.
"If you focus on affluent clients from India or Indonesia, they can usually converse in English," she added.
