The Transcantabrico GRAN LUJO

T he brand new and luxurious Gran Lujo, marked its first voyage from San Sebastian to Santiago de Compostela and vice versa in May 2011. Inspired by the Transcantabrico

Clasico, the train is completely refurbished and elegantly decorated to satisfy the taste of the most affluent customers. The common lounges have large windows, providing its guests a panoramic view of the sceneries while traveling.

The lavish Gran Lujo has 14 double suites, with either a double bed or two twin beds and an optional extra bed for traveling children under 14 years of age. The train accommodates a maximum of 28 guests and therefore, promises an excellent and more personalized service. The train crew is available 24 hours a day at your service.

The train remains stationary during the night to ensure a relaxing sleep for the guests.

The four original 1923 Pullman lounge cars have been specially and exclusively decorated for El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo,

making them true railway jewels.

Breakfast is served every morning in these common lounges, where guests can enjoy the Chef’s best cuisine and access to the all-day bar. Our lounges are equipped with national and international newspaper, television, a library and collection of board games. The panoramic lounge offers comfortable chairs for you to enjoy a book or watch the beautiful sceneries outside its large windows.

Engage in an intimate or private conversation with a friend at the tearoom and spend a lively evening in the pub, where live music and entertainment are offered. Non-alcoholic beverages are included in your tour but you are welcome to purchase your drinks from the bar.

The train is interconnected, allowing guests to freely move from one car to another.

The Suites

The suites of El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo have been tastefully designed and elegantly decorated to provide an unforgettable

experience and comfort for all guests. The suites either have one double bed or 2 twin beds, closet and suitcase storage. The amenities include a safe, 2 television units, a VCR, games console, HiFi system, double air-conditioning unit, PC with free internet connection, wireless telephone and mini-bar. The suites also have a large sofa, which can be turned into and extra bed for guests with children. San SebastiÁn - Santiago de Compostela

Itinerary

Day 1 Welcome to San Sebastian Your weeklong tour begins in San Sebastian with a welcome reception. After lunch, proceed on a guided sightseeing tour of this exciting city. Later, travel to Bilbao where the luxurious El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo, your hotel on wheels for the next seven nights, awaits. Board the train and settle in to your comfortable cabin as your railway cruise begins, traveling to Balmaseda.

Day 2 Modern city marvels of BilbaoBreakfast is served on board as the train makes its way to Bilbao, a modern city where the river searches for the sea. See the sights of this enchanting city and visit the Frank Gehry’s famous Guggenheim Museum, which is considered as the most important structure of its time. Rejoin the train and enjoy lunch as you travel to the capital of Cantabria. Santander is a quiet city combined with beauty and remarkable charm. Explore the area of El Sardinero and witness the majestic building - The Casino. Enjoy dinner in Santander, where the evening is spent.

Day 3 Divine visit to the monastery of Santo Toribio de Liebana The train arrives Unquera in the morning, where the coach awaits and takes you to the gorge of La Hermida en route to Potes. Here, visit the sanctuary of Santo Toribio de Liebana, which was founded prior to the 6th century. After lunch, depart for Cabezon de la Sal and visit the Comillas - the seat of the Archbishop.

Day 4 Travel back in time to Santillana del Mar After breakfast, disembark the train and board your coach that will take you to Santillana del mar, a picturesque medieval village captured in time. Visit the Neocave Museum of Altamira, which incorporates a replica of the nearby Stone Age caves famous for their prehistoric paintings. Day 5 Deep into the heart of Asturias This morning depart via coach and visit the National Park of Picos de Europa, the Covadonga Lakes, the Sanctuary of Covadonga and Cangas de Onis. Day 6 Journey to the charming city of Gijon The train departs from Oviedo this morning and brings you to the enchanting seaside city of Gijon. Day 4 Deep into the heart of AsturiasOn our way to Arriondas, we reach the heart of Asturias, the Picos de Europa National Park. Climb up to the beautiful Lake Enol, the Sanctuary of Covadonga, and finally, Cangas de Onís. After lunch, return to the train and follow the route of the International Descent of the River Sella to Ribadesella. Continue to Llanes, a marvelous fishing village in Eastern Asturias. The Lounge

With the excellent design and décor, the train boasts of its four lounge carriages that are probably the most charming and

beautiful space onboard. Throughout the 27 years of its history, its atmosphere has built many lifelong friendships.

The pub carriage is decorated and lit like a small ballroom, where guests can enjoy the evening with music and dancing. A separate lounge carriage has a second bar to accommodate guests who prefer a quiet and relaxing evening. The other two lounge carriages offer an area to read, play board games or chat with other passengers or simply relax and look out the window and enjoy the beautiful sceneries.

The Suites

Each suite in El Transcantabrico Clasico is designed to offer guests a space for rest and privacy. The suites come with a

double bed, with some offering a pull out bunk bed to accommodate a child less than 12 years of age.

The suites’ amenities include a mini-bar, safe, closet and luggage storage, desk and telephone with an external line. The private bathrooms that are equipped with hydro massage shower, whirlpool, steam bath and hairdryer.

The suites air-conditioning, heating, music volume and lighting can be individually adjusted for the guests’ utmost comfort.

The Lounges

The Expreso de La Robla offers three comfortable common lounge carriages with bar service, daily newspaper and magazines, a

computer for passengers’ use, and free internet connection.

Mingle with your fellow guests and enjoy a cocktail, challenge each other with board games, read your favorite book or simply relax as you watch the marvelous views outside the large windows. The lounges are available for all guests and offer opportunities for various activities depending on your mood.

Day 1 Your journey begins in GijónWelcome to Gijón, home to Romanesque churches, that date back from the 12th and 13th centuries. Check in to El Expreso de la Robla, your hotel on wheels for the next three nights. Settle in to your comfortable cabin as your railway journey begins, traveling to the first Galician site at the banks near the mouth of Eo’s River. Enjoy dinner in the Parador and overnight in Ribadeo.

Day 2 Breathtaking views of northern SpainEnjoy a succulent breakfast on board as the train makes its way to Viveiro, a beautiful walled city and a mirror to the splendid views from Mount San Roque. Rejoin the train and depart for Ortigueira where the coach to Cariño awaits. After lunch in Cedeira, continue on to Cape Ortegal and see the awe inspiring cliffs and views from the Northern most part of Spain Visit the Sanctuary of San Andres de Teixido and behold the beauty of this village which is indescribable in words. Transfer back to Cedeira and prepare to return to Ortigueira for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3 Explore the historic pilgrimage site of Santiago de CompostelaThis morning, board the coach to Santiago de Compostela. Upon arrival, explore the beauty and history of this city, whose Cathedral was the destination of the important 9th century medieval pilgrimage route, the Way of St. James. Visit the Plaza del Obradoiro, the Platerías, its famous Cathedral and discover why Santiago is hailed as a jewel in a crown. Continue on to Ferrol and enjoy a short sightseeing tour of this historical city before dinner. Overnight in Ferrol

Day 4 Conclude the journey with a visit to Cathedral at Mondoñedo and the beachesThe journey continues as you travel to Foz at the break of dawn and behold the breathtaking views from its cliffs. The next stop is the city if Mondoñedo, one of the most evocative capitals of the old Kingdom of Galicia. Visit the city’s main attraction, the three-nave cathedral of San Martiño, whose architecture reflects an unusual mixture of Gothic and Baroque styles and the beaches at La Marina Lucense. After lunch, travel to Navia where the train awaits and takes you back to Gijon. Upon arrival, bid a fond farewell to your newfound friends as your memorable journey ends here.

Bilbao/León/BilbaoDay 1 Start your train journey from BilbaoWelcome to Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque Country and the capital of the province of Biscay. Check in at the FEVE train station and board the Expreso de la Robla, your hotel on wheels for the next three nights. Settle in to your comfortable cabin as your railway adventure begins, traveling to Espinosa de los Monteros. Visit the Karstic Complex of Ojo de Guareña in Sotoscueva and find the largest cave collection of the Iberian Peninsula. Rejoin the train and depart for Cervera de Pisuerga where the train remains stationary for the evening at the station of Vado-Cervera. Dinner at the Parador of Fuentes Carrionas.

Day 2 Explore Leon, the city of Roman origin Enjoy breakfast on board as the train travels to Matallana where the coach awaits to take you to the Caves of Valporquero. The cave is famous for its fascinating stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes. Rejoin the train as it takes you to San Feliz and transfer to León, a fascinating city, famous for several monumental buildings, including the Real Colegiata de San Isidoro, San Marcos and more. Enjoy dinner at the famous wine caves of Prieto Picudo and overnight onboard as the train remains stationary at the railway station of San Feliz.

Day 3 Visit the natural wonders at Vegacervera and ValporqueroWhile having breakfast on board, the train makes it way to Guardo. After arrival, board the coach for your sightseeing tour and visit Romanesque Art of Palencia, Carrion de los Condes, Fromista, and Villalcazar de Sirga. The Lounges

The “Al Andalus” train is the largest tourist train in the world and boasts of its four railway gems – the spacious four lounge

cars. Enjoy a scrumptious buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner at the restaurant car, engage in a lively conversation with cocktails as you mingle with your fellow guests at the bar car and delight in nightly musical performances at the piano car.

The tearoom offers large windows and comfortable chairs where you may simply relax, while enjoying the view of beautiful scenery that passes by your window. All carriages are air-conditioned and open 24 hours a day for all guests to enjoy with the friendly waiting staff ready to serve you at all times.

The Suites

The carriages of the “Al Andalus” were used by the British Royal family in the earlier days as they journeyed from Calais to the

Cote d’Azur. The train has also recently remodeled seven suite sleepers, five of which were built in France in 1929. The Belle Epoque inspired suites have been enhanced with advanced technological features, but at the same time preserving the historical value and charm for the comfort and enjoyment of the guests.

The “Al Andalus” has a total of 32 suites consisting of 12 Standard and 20 Superior Suites, all of which have separate air conditioners. The Superior Suites have 2 low beds, a safe, closet and a private bathroom, while the Superior Suites are equipped with a double bed (150 x 200 cm), a mini-bar, safe, closet and large full bathroom.

Day 1 Sunday: Sevilla - CórdobaYou are welcomed and received at the Santa Justa train station in Seville at noon. Board the Al Andalus Train and enjoy a delicious meal as the train travels to Cordoba. Upon arrival, visit the Historical Quarters, hailed as a World Heritage Site since 1994. The tour includes visit to the Alcazar, the famed Mosque and the Jewish Quarter. The rest of the afternoon is yours free to explore this historical city. In the evening, dinner is served at a local restaurant, where you have the opportunity to taste the cuisine of Cordoba. Spend the evening onboard, as the train remains stationed in Cordoba.

Day 2 Monday: Córdoba - Baeza - Úbeda - GranadaThe train arrives at Linares-Baeza this morning, after breakfast. Today, visit the Museum of Olive Oil, the old town of Baeza and the International University of Andalucía. Continue on to Ubeda, and discover the Monumental City with its preserved Renaissance style churches and palaces. Following lunch, you have some free time to discover the surroundings of this magnificent city at your own leisure. Return to the train and enjoy dinner onboard as you travel to Granada where the evening is spent.

Day 3 Tuesday: GranadaThis morning, visit Alhambra - a palace and fortress complex constructed during the mid 14th century by the Moorish rulers of the Emirate of Granada. Continue on to the Gardens of Generalife, a romantic garden remarkable for its location and diversity of its flowers, plants and fountains. Proceed to the city of Sierra Nevada and discover the Quarters of Albaicin, Sacromonte, the Cathedral and the first Renaissance Church in Spain. Enjoy some free time in the afternoon as you discover the hidden treasures of Granada. Dinner is served at a local restaurant followed by a remarkable Flamenco Show. Return to the train and spend the evening onboard in Granada.

Day 4 Wednesday: Granada - Ronda - CádizMarvel at the magnificent view of the mountain ranges as the train travels to Ronda. Explore this amazing city, and discover its famous bridges- the

Puente Romano, Puente Viejo and Puente Nuevo. Ronda is also the cradle of “Bullfighting.” Once a year, a unique and historical bullfight events take place at Spain’s oldest ring - Plaza de Toros de Ronda. After lunch, board the train as you travel to Cádiz – the oldest city in Western Europe preserving a remarkable historical heritage. Discover the fascinating architecture of its monuments, massive stonewalls and forts as you stroll along the city’s impressive streets. Dinner is served at a local restaurant before returning to the train for an overnight stay in Cadiz.

Day 5 Thursday: Cádiz - Jerez - Sanlucar - JerezEnjoy breakfast onboard as the train travels to Jerez – home of “Sherry” wine and historical buildings. Visit a wine cellar where you have the opportunity to learn about the elaborate process of wine making and taste some of their products. You then proceed to the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art and marvel at the show called “How the Andalusian Horses Dance.” Continue on to Sanlucar de Barrameda, a city located at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River and in front of the National Park of Doñana - the largest nature reserve in Europe. The reserve is a protected area and declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994. After lunch, cruise along the Guadalquivir River and enjoy the magnificent view and wonder of nature. Return to Jerez in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day at leisure exploring this magnificent city. Enjoy dinner at a restaurant and spend some time mingling with your new friends at the farewell party. The evening is spent onboard as the train remains stationed in Jerez.

Day 6 Friday: Jerez - SevillaAfter breakfast, the train arrives Seville, the capital of Andalucia and Cultural Center of Southern Spain. This morning’s tour includes visit to reputed World Heritage Sites such as the great and beautiful minaret tower - La Giralda, the famous Cathedral, the beautiful palace of Alcazar, the 13th century tower Torre del Oro and the Archivo General de Indias. Return to the Santa Justa train station where the train crew awaits to assist you with your luggage. Bid farewell to your new friends as you continue your onward journey.
