TECHNICAL DETAILSLOCATION The name Monteroni D'Arbia derives from the Latin "Mons" that means "mountain" and, subsequently it was added to the specification "Arbia" in clear reference to the location of the site closed to the homonym torrent. In the XIII century Monteroni d'Arbia was under the influence of the powerful city of Siena, but the actual development and consolidation of the village was in the next century thanks to the nearby Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala that let built a fortified mill around which the community of Monteroni d'Arbia created the first settlements. The village was fortified between 1322 and 1324 due to its strategic position near the so-called "Via Francigena" and over the following years it acquired a considerable economic importance, so that, in 1382, it claimed its own autonomy. In the middle of the XIII century the village underwent a violent plunder by the imperial troops allied to the Republic of Florence, looting that caused the destruction of part of its fortifications. Since then Monteroni d'Arbia became part of the Florentine countryside under the domination of the Grand duchy of the De' Medici family. During the period of the De' Medici domination the village of Monteroni d'Arbia had an important economic growth thanks to the incentive that the grand duchy offered to the agricultural activities. At the beginning of the XVIII century the dukes of Lorraine came to power and he kept it till when the territory was invaded by the French troops of Napoleon Bonaparte. During the Napoleonic domination, until 1814, Monteroni d'Arbia became a free municipality. In 1861 Monteroni d'Arbia was annexed to the Reign of Italy by King Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy.
