PROGRAM

These woods, their weary wanderer soonin awe and fearful wonder swoon;I weep with joy beneath the moon.

And as the darkened hours flee,my heart beats ever rapidly.Though heavy hang my eyes with sleep,my singing soul, it cries to thee:

Come and sing with me!

The twinkling sky casts forth its tune:O must I leave thy charms so soon?I weep with joy beneath the moon.

Hymn for Our TimeTune: HyfrydolSetting by John Ness BeckText by William P. MerrillG. Schirmer 11575

Not alone for mighty empire, stretching far o’er land and sea,

Not alone for bounteous harvests, lift we up our hearts, to Thee.

Standing in the living present, memory and hope between,Lord, we would with deep thanksgiving praise Thee most for

things unseen.

Not for battleship and fortress, not for conquests of the sword;

But for conquests of the spirit give we thanks to Thee, O Lord;

For the priceless gift of freedom, for the home, the church, the school;

For the open door to honor in a land where people rule.

God of justice, save the people from the clash of race and creed,

From the strife of class and faction; make our nation free indeed.

Keep our faith in simple valor strong as when our life began,Till it find its full fruition. Alleluia. Amen.

PART II: LIFE-GIVING WATER

The Water Is WideTraditionalArr. Craig Hella Johnson (b. 1962)G. Schirmer 50490633

The water is wide, I cannot cross o’er,And neither I have wings to fly.Give me a boat that can carry twoAnd both shall row, my love and I.

PART I: THE BEAUTY OF COLLABORATION

The Choral Fantasia, Op. 80Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827)Sung in GermanH. W. Gray Co., Inc.

With grace, charm, and sweet soundsThe harmonies of our life,And the sense of beauty engendersThe flowers which eternally bloom.Peace and joy advancing in perfect accord,Like the alternating play of the waves; All harsh and hostile elementsRender to a sublime sentiment.

When the magic sounds reignAnd the sacred word is spoken,That strongly engender the wonderful,The night and the tempest divert light,Calm without, profound joy within,Awaiting the great hour.Meanwhile, the spring sun and artBathe in the light.

Something great, into the heartBlooms anew when in all its beauty,Which spirit taken flight,And all a choir of spirits resounds in response.Accept then, oh you beautiful spiritsJoyously of the gifts of art. When love and strength are united,The favour of God rewards Man.

Ballade to the Moon (from Three Nocturnes)Daniel Elder (b. 1986)GIA Publications G-8071

On moonlit night I wander free,my mind to roam on thoughts of thee. With midnight darkness beckoningmy heart toward mystic fantasy:

Come and dream in me!

How beautiful, this night in June! And here, upon the velvet dune,I weep with joy beneath the moon.

The path lies dark before my sight, and yet, my feet with pure delighttrod onward through the blackened vale, beneath the starry sky so bright.

O share thy light!

Now love is gentle, and love is kind,The sweetest flow’r when first it’s new,But love grows old and waxes cold,And fades away like morning dew.

There is a ship and she sails the sea,She’s loaded deep as deep can be,But not so deep as the love I’m in,I know not if I sink or swim.

Sicut CervusGiovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525–1594)Text from Psalm 42:1Sung in LatinMercury Music 75–7

As a hart longs for the flowing streams, so longs my soul for thee, O God.

Wade in de WaterTraditional SpiritualArr. Allen Koepke (1939–2012)Santa Barbara Music 227

Wade in the water, children,God is gonna touble de water, my Lord.Chills the body, and not de soul.Well, de River Jordan is so chilly an’ cold, but not de soul.If you get there before I do, just tell my friends I’m a-comin’

INTERMISSION

PART III: THE AMERICAN HERITAGE

Saints Bound for HeavenArr. Alice Parker (b. 1925) and Robert Shaw (1916–1999)Lawson-Gould LG00911

Our bondage it shall end by and by,From Egypt’s yoke set free,Hail the glorious jubilee,And to Canaan we’ll return by and by.

Our Deliv’rer He shall come by and by.And our sorrows have an endWith our three-score years and ten,And vast glory crown the day by and by.

And when to Jordan’s floods we are come,Jehovah rules the tideAnd the waters He’ll divide,And the ransom’d host shall shout we are come.

Then with all the happy throng we’ll rejoice!Shouting Glory to our King,Till the vaults of heaven ring. And thro’ all eternity we’ll rejoice!

God Is SeenTune: Captain KiddArr. Alice Parker (b. 1925)Lawson-Gould LG 51333

Through all the world below God is seen all around,Search hills and valleys through, there He’s found. The growing of the corn, the lily and the thorn,The pleasant and forlorn, all declare, God is there,In meadows drest in green, God is seen.

See springing waters rise, fountains flow, rivers run,The mist that veils the sky hides the sky hides the sun. Then down the rain doth pour, the ocean it doth roarAnd beat upon the shore, and all praise, in their ways,The God who ne’er declines His designs.

The sun with all his rays speaks of God as he fliesThe comet in her blaze ‘God,’ she cries; The shining of the stars, the moon, when she appears,His awful name declares; see them fly through the sky,And join the solemn sound all around.

John Saw Duh NumbuhTraditional SpiritualArr. Alice Parker (b. 1925) and Robert Shaw (1916–1999)Lawson-Gould LG51109

John saw duh numbuh dat no one could numbuh, comin’ up on high.

John saw duh hundred an’ forty four thousan’, comin’ up on high.

Tell John not to call duh roll till I git dere, comin’ up on high.

PART IV: JOY OF LIFE

NoelTodd Smith/arr. Brad Holmes (b. 1956)Sung in Kituba dialectFirst Step Publishing

There Is No RoseConnor Koppin (b. 1991)Traditional English (ca. 1420)MorningStar 50-1121

There is no rose of such virtueAs is the rose that bare Jesu;Alleluia. For in this rose contained wasHeav’n and earth in little space;Resmiranda (wonderful thing).Leave we all this worldly mirth,And follow we this joyful birth;Alleluia. Amen.

It Takes a VillageJoan Szymko (b. 1957)Text adapted from a West African sayingSanta Barbara Music 331

It takes a whole village to raise our children,It takes a whole village to raise one childWe all ev’ry one must share the burden,We all ev’ry one will share the joy.

To Luther let us singA joyous song of love and cheer.May our voices loudly ringIn praise of Alma Mater dear.May our thoughts to thee oft turnWhen we’re absent far away.May we then sincerely yearnTo return to thee someday.

DORIAN FESTIVALS AND SUMMER PROGRAMS

MUSIC AT LUTHER

Martin Luther—our namesake—believed music to be “one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.” For more than 130 years, Luther

students have been sharing this marvelous gift with audiences across the country and around the globe.

Music is much more than a gift, though. It’s an integral part of the community of faith and the community of learning on campus. The arts are fundamental to the liberal arts experience at Luther; they help to define what it means to be human. Here, creative scholarship, personal growth, worship, and social relations merge to create an understanding of the wholeness of life.

The vibrancy of Luther’s music program is rooted in a balance between the academic rigor of our acclaimed music major and the numerous opportunities for study and performance by students from all disciplines across campus.

The Luther campus is alive with the sounds of six choirs, three bands, three orchestras, two jazz bands, and nearly 1,000 student musicians. Our students participate in large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons, and master classes. More than 300 music majors study music theory/ear training, history, education, composition, jazz, church music, and performance. It all adds up to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world!

For more information about Luther’s music program, visit the Luther College music website, http://music.luther.edu.
