Lung Infections

“Due care must be taken to improve lung health so that simple infections do not become life

threatening diseases.”

Lung infections are some of the most common ailments that affect people all over the world. The lungs

are organs located on each side of the chest consisting of the trachea or windpipe and bronchi through

which the process of breathing in and out happens. The lungs expand and contract as we take each

breath.

With changing seasons, the lungs get easily infected. Lung infections can also be caused by excessive

smoking and genetic problems as well. Most people neglect lung infections interpreting it as a common

cold but some diseases can even lead to death. Visit your nearest Apollo clinics centre to know more

about lung infections and how to avoid getting infected.

Some of the symptoms to look out for when suffering from a lung infection are:

Fever: The body temperature in each person is different but developing a sudden fever can be a

sign of a lung infection. A simple course of antibiotics can cure the fever and cure the infection.

Cough: A cough that gets worse with time and is productive is a sign of a lung infection and

needs immediate medical attention.

Shortness of breath: Experiencing regular shortness of breath is a sign of respiratory tract

infection but if it worsens after a few days, it is a sure sign of a lung infection.

Chest pain: This chest pain is not cardiac, but a sharp pain that occurs when coughing or

breathing deeply. It feels like tightness in the chest that needs to be checked out by a doctor.

There are a few other ailments that affect the lungs due to a various factors including lifestyle choices,

viruses and physiological problems. Some of these infections are:

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): COPD is a chronic lung disease that refers to

chronic bronchitis. It’s most common symptoms are shortness of breath and cough. The best

way to treat it is with medication and lifestyle changes.

Pneumonia: Pneumonia is a lung infection that shows up in the form of cough, fever, chest pain,

nausea, weakness and shortness of breath. Pneumonia can be contracted from anywhere

usually through bacteria and viruses. A common cold or flu can manifest into pneumonia which

is very hard for the lungs to cope with.

Asthma: Asthma occurs when the bronchial tubes get inflamed or fill up with sticky secretions

making it hard for an individual to breathe. Some of the common symptoms of asthma are

coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest.

It is not very hard for the lungs to get infected, especially in the monsoons and winters. Due care must

be taken to improve lung health so that simple infections do not go on to become life threatening

diseases.
