LUMSDEN HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION AWARDS 2020 GRADUATION AWARDS/SCHOLARSHIPS Lumsden High School recognizes that education is a life-long process. We are proud of our many graduates who pursue post-secondary education. To support graduates in their worthwhile endeavours, the Lumsden High School Graduation Awards Committee actively seeks out sponsors who are willing to support our graduates. We offer our thanks to the many contributors. Donors Local sponsors donate approximately $25,000 each year to our Lumsden High School Awards. These awards are not tied to any post-secondary institution; they are donated by private donations from local sponsors.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PROCEDURES Awards Application LHS Grad Awards 2020 – General Application and Community/School Service Application will be available on April 24, 2020. A digital version of the LHS Grad Awards Guide 2020, containing detailed information about each award, is available on the LHS website. Students must apply online and email supporting documents for graduation awards. Steps to Apply:

1) Complete the General Application online at https://goo.gl/forms/mKRvfceQQrqbajJv1

2) Applications cannot be saved while you are working or changed after they are submitted. Be sure you are ready to complete the whole application before you start.

3) Complete the Service Application as a Word Document if you are applying for an

award that requires it. Email it to [email protected] by the deadline. 4) Email additional documentation (ie. reference letters, etc) if required to

[email protected] by the deadline. All award applications must be submitted online and the Service Applications (Word documents) and any additional documents must be emailed to [email protected] by May 22, 2020 at 3:30pm. No exceptions. Awards Criteria

Each award has specific criteria that have been developed by the award sponsors. Students must ensure that they meet the criteria by reading through the LHS Grad Awards Guide 2020. Common award criteria are: community involvement, academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and geographic location. For some awards, students will need to fill out the Community/School Service Application portion of the Awards Application; for other awards, a written submission is required. Detailed requirements for each award are indicated in the Grad Awards Guide. Awards Selection The Lumsden High School Graduation Awards Committee consists of four to five grade twelve teachers, the career counsellor, and one administrator. The committee will select the award recipients based on the criteria for each award as specified by the award sponsor. Terms and Conditions To qualify as potential recipients for Lumsden High School graduation awards, graduates must meet the following conditions:

a) be a LHS 2020 graduate. b) be enrolling in post-secondary (university, college, technical institute, apprenticeship) for

the 2020-21 school year*. c) submit an application form online and email other documents to [email protected]

by the deadline. d) authorize the Lumsden High School Grad Awards Committee to collect, use, store, and

confirm information about the graduate, and share with donor selection committee(s) for purposes of administering the awards. The LHS Grad Awards Committee will use the information only for the purposes of evaluating the graduate’s application.

e) authorize LHS to take photos during the Grad Awards Ceremony and share the photos with the local newspaper and award donors.

f) sign the “Acknowledgement and Authorization” component of the application, agreeing to be bound by these Terms and Conditions.

Claiming Your Award A letter will be given to the recipient explaining the process for claiming the award. The recipient will be asked to provide proof of tuition fees paid to a technical institute, college/university, a recognized post-secondary institution, or proof of registration in an apprenticeship program and present to the LHS office by Friday, October 30, 2020. Alternatively, an award winner can email the documentation to [email protected]. A cheque will be issued or mailed out to the student for the award amount at this time. *Under extenuating circumstances, the Graduation Awards Committee may consider extending the receipt of the award up to one year. Please submit the “Grad Award Intentions Form” to Lumsden High School by October 30, 2020 to inform the Committee of your circumstances so they can grant an extension or not.

AMK ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS Award: $250 Number: Two Eligibility: This award will be presented to a graduate who has completed grade

twelve within the school year and has regular school attendance. It will be awarded to a student enrolled in a pre-employment trade course or to someone who is intending to do an apprenticeship. Although students need the minimum requirements for their trade, academic marks will not be taken into account in determining the recipient. Co-curricular activities and community involvement will be considered in choosing an applicant.

Conditions: Awarded annually. If no student(s) meet the criteria in a given year, the award(s) will be carried over to the following year. Monies will be awarded upon verification of enrolment at a pre-employment course or when the recipient registers in an apprenticeship with the Apprenticeship Board. Alternatively, the money will be awarded upon completion of the probationary employment period in a skilled trade. Winners must have their employer fill out a letter verifying they have completed the probationary period working in a skilled trade to claim the award.

Donor: AMK Construction Selection: Awards Committee BEN GREBINSKI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Award: Certificate Number: One Eligibility: This award is sponsored personally by Ben Grebinski who served the

School Division as Director of Education. This award is presented to a Grade 12 Student who has been active in school related athletics, the arts, and has earned honour roll status.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Ben Grebinski Selection: School Administrator, Awards Committee BETHUNE CO-OPERATIVE ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP Award: $300 Number: One History: The award is given to honour students from Bethune specifically students

who have attended Clive Draycott Elementary School. Eligibility: This award will be presented to a student who has attended Clive

Draycott Elementary School who has achieved success in school studies and will be continuing his/her education in post-secondary studies.

BETHUNE & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB AWARD Award: $800 and a plaque Number: One Eligibility: This award has been established to encourage and recognize community

and scholastic involvement by high school students of the Bethune area. This award will be presented to a graduate who has attended Clive Draycott School in Bethune. The successful candidate must have been in regular attendance at school, completed grade twelve within the year of application, have an academic average which qualifies him/her for entrance to university or technical school, and have been involved in community and school activities. The student must provide evidence of enrolment at either university or technical school. The student must not have received more than $500 from other scholarships/awards during the current year.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Bethune and District Lions Club Selection: Awards Committee BUENA VISTA PARKS & RECREATION PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Award: $1000 Number: One Eligibility: This award will be presented to a graduate who is registered at a post-

secondary institution. It will be awarded based on personal achievement and involvement in the school and community. First preference is given to a resident of Buena Vista. Second preference is given to a resident of the South Shore area. Although marks sufficient to graduate are necessary, grade averages will not be taken into account in determining the recipient. A letter of reference to attest to community involvement is required. The following point system will be also be used to determine the award recipient. CRAVEN AND DISTRICT ELKS LODGE #581 MOST IMPROVED STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP Award: $400, a personal plaque, and name displayed on a plaque displayed in

Lumsden High School and on a plaque in the Craven Community Centre. Number: One Eligibility: This award will be presented to graduate who is planning to further

his/her education at a recognized training facility. The award will be presented to the student who has the shown consistent improvement in work quality, work ethic, and overall performance. Although marks sufficient to graduate are necessary, grade averages will not be taken into account when determining the recipient.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Craven and District Elks Lodge #581 Selection: Each teacher of grade twelve students will submit a choice to the Awards

Committee, who will make the final decision. CRAVEN AND DISTRICT ELKS LODGE #581 SCHOLARSHIP Award: $400, a personal plaque, and name displayed on a plaque in Lumsden

High School and on a plaque in the Craven Community Centre. Number: One Eligibility: This scholarship is a general scholarship which can be used to assist a

graduate entering a post-secondary education facility. This scholarship is open to students who have not received more than $500 in scholarships for the current year. The award will be presented to the student who has most demonstrated volunteerism and involvement in the community at large.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Craven and District Elks Lodge #581 Selection: Awards Committee DAVE WAHL SCHOLARSHIP Award: $1000 Number: Two (Dependent upon donations in given year). History: This award is given in honour of Dave Wahl, retired LHS teacher, who

was a role-model and mentor to a generation of LHS students. In addition to his clear and professional instruction, Mr. Wahl’s curiousity and interest in all branches of Maths and Sciences led to all manner of fun and engaging demonstrations for his students. The ability of Mr. Wahl to inspire an interest in Maths and Sciences led a contingent of LHS graduates to pursue a career in Engineering, as well as many other fields, from Education to Medicine.

Eligibility: This award will be presented to a graduate who has:

a) Academic achievement in the Maths/Sciences b) Been accepted into an Engineering program at the university-level

(first preference given to students attending U of R or U of S) i. Applicants entering other math/science related fields will also

be given consideration, especially in a year where there are not enough students entering engineering

Osiowy, Tim Sullivan, Mike Andre Selection: Awards Committee DENNIS DRAPER SCHOLARSHIP Award: $500 Number: One Eligibility: This award will be presented to a graduate completing grade twelve

within the school year with an academic average qualifying him/her for entrance into a postsecondary institution.

Good citizenship, sportsmanship and involvement in school/community activities must be demonstrated by the successful candidate. Preferential consideration will go to graduates from Buena Vista or Regina Beach.

The student must not have received more than $750 from other scholarships/awards during the school year.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: The Dennis Draper Scholarship Fund Selection: Awards Committee GOVERNOR GENERAL'S MEDAL FOR LUMSDEN HIGH SCHOOL Award: Medal Number: One Eligibility: The graduate with the highest average based on grade eleven and grade

twelve marks will be presented with the Governor General's medal. Courses taken after graduation to upgrade marks are not to be included.

JAMIESON FAMILY LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP Award: $4688 (one award) or $2344 (two awards) or $1562 (three awards) Number: One to three (dependent upon quality of applications) Eligibility: This award will be presented to the student who is currently enrolled at LHS and is eligible for graduation at the end of the current academic year. The applicant is to have been employed on a part time basis for the past 6 months and intends to remain employed prior to beginning studies in the upcoming academic term. The ideal recipient will have submitted a written statement describing the commitment as a volunteer in school and/or in the local community and how pursuing post secondary education or training will help them deepen their commitment to becoming a community builder. This award is for the student who has

been accepted and intends to attend a licensed post-secondary institution in the province of Saskatchewan. Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Jamieson family Legacy Scholarship Fund Selection: Awards committee to follow specifically outlined criteria KEDLESTON COMMUNITY CLUB AWARD Award: $285 Number: One Eligibility: This award will be presented to a grade twelve graduate who has

attended Clive Draycott School and who has registered in post-secondary education. First preference will be given to a student who has enrolled in an agriculture program. Second preference will be given to a student who has enrolled in a technical institute. A student’s academics and school and community involvement will also be considered. The recipient must not have received any other scholarship.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Kedleston Community Club Selection: Awards Committee LAUREN RICE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Award: $2000 Number: One Eligibility: This award will be presented to the graduate who demonstrates school

and community involvement and academic achievement. The successful candidate must be accepted into a nursing or pre-nursing program.

LEROY STARKES MATHEMATICS AWARD Award: $200 Number: One Eligibility: This award will be presented to the graduate with the highest average in

Pre-Calculus 30. Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Mr. Leroy Starkes Selection: Senior Mathematics Teachers LIFE TOUCH CANADA AWARD Award: $250 Number: One Eligibility: This award will be given to a graduate who has been actively involved in

yearbook for a minimum of one year. The candidate’s dedication and commitment to yearbook will be considered. Preference will be given to a student who has not received another LHS Graduation Award.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Life Touch Canada Selection: Awards Committee, with consultation from the Yearbook Advisor LUMSDEN & DISTRICT ARTS COUNCIL BURSARY Award: $500 Number: One Eligibility: This award is intended to support a local student pursuing continuing

education related to the arts. The award will be given to a graduate who is entering a post-secondary college or university program relating to the arts. Programs could include visual arts, film, dance, theatre, photojournalism, creative writing, music, graphic design, architecture, interior design, decorating, media productions, art/music education or other degree/course deemed to meet the intended goal of the Art Council as determined by the Awards Committee.

Applicants are required to write a paragraph indicating:

1) The role “art” plays in their own life and why it is important to them 2) Why “art” is important in their community and suggestion(s) to

encourage and support “art” in their community

The bursary recipient is requested to attend a Lumsden and District Arts Council meeting or Open Studio to share his or her arts and his or her postsecondary plans with the council. All responses will remain property of the Lumsden & District Arts Council.

LUMSDEN & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB AWARDS Award: $500 and plaque Number: Two Eligibility: This award has been established to encourage and recognize community

and scholastic involvement by high school students of the Lumsden area. This award will be presented to two Lumsden High School students whose parent/guardians receive their postal service at the Lumsden post office or who is within the Lumsden & District Lions Club service area. The successful candidate must have been in regular attendance at school, completed grade twelve within the year of application, have an academic average which qualified him/her for entrance to university or technical school, and have been involved in community and school activities. The student must provide evidence of enrolment at either university or technical school. The student must not have received more than $500 from other scholarships/awards during the current year.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Lumsden & District Lions Club Selection: Awards Committee LUMSDEN HIGH SCHOOL AWARDS OF HONOUR Award: Certificate Number: No limit Eligibility: Certificates will be presented to grade twelve graduates who attain an

average of 80% in the following: English Language Arts A30/A31, B30/B31, History: Canadian Studies 30/31, plus any two other 30 level subjects.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Lumsden High School Staff Selection: Awards Committee **This is calculation is subject to change. We will be as flexible as we need to be based on

these exceptional circumstances. LUMSDEN HIGH SCHOOL P.R. IONEL AWARD Award: $1000 Number: One Eligibility: This award was established by Percy Ionel, a former teacher at Lumsden

High School, to encourage and recognize athletic participation, academic success, and student leadership.

The graduating student who receives this award will have demonstrated academic success, athletic participation, and student leadership. The student will have an academic average which qualifies them for university or technical school.

The award recipient will be decided upon by a panel of school personnel which may include administrators, teachers, and support staff. All staff interested will have the opportunity to participate in the selection process. A decision will be made based on the student’s academics, athletic participation/ability, and on school leadership.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Dr. Jim Rice Selection: Awards Committee LUMSDEN HIGH SCHOOL SUBJECT AWARDS Award: Certificate Number: Number of 30-level courses offered in each school year Eligibility: In each 30-level course offered at Lumsden High School, the student that

attains the highest mark will be awarded a certificate. Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Lumsden High School Staff Selection: Awards Committee **These awards are subject to change and may not be awarded this year. LUMSDEN HIGH SCHOOL VISUAL ART AWARD Award: $100 and plaque Number: One Eligibility: This award will be given to a graduate who has successfully completed

Visual Art 30 with a good academic standing. Preference will be given to a student entering a post-secondary course related to visual art. This could include programs such as fine arts, photography, computer-aided drafting, video game design, or film. In the event that there is no student in a current year that is entering this type of program, the recipient will be someone who has demonstrated hard work, creativity, and a passion for visual art.

LUMSDEN HISTORICAL SOCIETY AWARD Award: $100 Number: One Eligibility: This award will be given to the graduate with high achievement in History

30. A passion for and excellence in historical studies will also be taken into consideration.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Lumsden Historical Society Selection: Awards Committee, History 30 teacher LUMSDEN LEGION LANGUAGE AWARD Award: $200 Number One Eligibility: This award will be presented to the graduate with the highest average in

ELA A30. Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Lumsden Legion Selection: Awards Committee LUMSDEN VALLEY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP Award: $300 Number: One Eligibility: This award was established to recognize excellence in the area of

Environmental Science. This award will be given to a graduate who has taken Wildlife Management 10, 20, or 30 or Environmental Science 20. First preference will be given to a student who is planning to study in the field of environmental science, science, or natural resources. Second preference will be given to a student who has an interest in the outdoors, developed a leadership role for his or her peers as it pertains to the environment, or performed extracurricular work related to conservation or the environment.

LUTHER COLLEGE ENTRANCE AWARD Award: $100-500 (depending on how many students apply) Number: Unlimited Eligibility: This award will be presented to graduates admitted to the University of

Regina, registered through Luther College in the Faculties of Arts, Science, or Fine Arts, in degree or pre-professional program, beginning studies in the Fall Semester immediately following high school graduation, and taking no less than 9 credit-hours in the Fall Semester.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Luther College Selection: Awards Committee and Luther College NUTRIEN AG SOLUTIONS SCHOLARSHIP Award: $500 Number: One Eligibility: This scholarship is intended for a Lumsden High School graduate who is

entering into an agriculture or agribusiness programs, or intends to pursue a career in anything related to the agricultural industry. Students must outline in a paragraph how their future plans pertain to the agriculture industry. Preference will be given to a student who has not received more than $500 in scholarships/bursaries.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Nutrien Ag Solutions Selection: Awards Committee PAPA GEORDIE & LUMSDEN SUPERMARKETS BALANCED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Award: $500 Number: Two Eligibility: This award will be presented to two graduates who are registered at a

post-secondary institution. This award is presented to students who are well-rounded individuals, have learned the importance of a positive work ethic and have shown commitment to a balanced lifestyle through community and school involvement and part-time work. Although marks sufficient to graduate are necessary, grade averages will not be taken into account in determining the recipient. Students must complete an application form to be eligible.

PIMÂCIHOWIN (MAKING A LIVING) SCHOLARSHIP Award: $1500 Number: One Eligibility: This award will be presented to a Prairie Valley graduate who is a self-

declared First Nations/Metis/Inuit. The candidate must display perseverance and diligence as a student academically. The grade 12 average of all subjects and overall grade 10-12 average will be considered by the committee. The candidate must be enrolled in a Saskatchewan post-secondary institution. The candidate must be caring, generous, and involved in their community; display potential and responsibility; strong desire to succeed; financial need; and a positive attitude. Candidates must complete the Pimâcihowin scholarship package and submit to the Career Counsellor by May 15, 2020.

to enter the College/Faculty of Education and who has the highest average of English Language Arts A30, B30, Canadian studies 30, one 30 level math, one 30 level science, plus the next two highest marks of any two 30 level subjects. The PVSD student need not be accepted into the college/faculty of education, but must be enrolled in a university degree program. excellence in music and dedication to the Lumsden and district bands. The winning student must be enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution. Preference will be given to a graduate pursuing a career in music or music education.

of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality. This award will be presented to the graduate who has demonstrated a helping attitude toward those most vulnerable, as is the mission of the Red Cross. The recipient will have performed volunteer service in the community and will have exhibited one other Canadian

time resident of the Regina Beach area and a charter member of the Regina Beach and District Lions Club. This award is intended to recognize community and scholastic involvement by high school students of the Regina Beach area. The successful candidate must have been in regular attendance at school, completed grade twelve within the year of application, have an academic average which qualifies him/her for entrance to university or technical school, and have been involved in community and school activities. The student must provide evidence of enrolment at either university or technical school. The following point system will be used to determine the award recipient:

RURAL MUNICIPALITY OF LUMSDEN SCHOLARSHIP Award: $750 Number: One Eligibility: The R.M. of Lumsden has established an educational scholarship for

students residing in the R.M. of Lumsden #189. This award will be presented to the graduate who demonstrates community involvement. The successful candidate must have been in regular school attendance at school, completed grade twelve within the year of application, have an academic average which qualifies him for entrance to university or technical school, and have been involved in community activities. The student must provide evidence of enrolment at either university or technical school. The candidate must have not received more than $500.00 from other scholarships/awards during the current year.

Conditions: Awarded annually Donor: Rural Municipality of Lumsden Selection: Awards Committee SASKATCHEWAN YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP SCHOLARSHIP Award: $1000 Number: One Eligibility: This award will be presented to the graduate who has completed all three

levels of the Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship program. The graduate’s achievement, dedication and post-secondary plans will be considered in the selection process. The successful applicant must provide Saskatchewan Apprenticeship with evidence that he/she has, within two years of high school graduation, been registered in a contract of apprenticeship for one year in Saskatchewan or completed one year of a Saskatchewan post-secondary training program in a designated skilled trade. Applications are due to the Career Counsellor by March 1.

education of any type. Or who can demonstrate a disadvantage related to the COVID-19 event such as a loss of employment. The candidate must be able to demonstrate volunteerism in the South Shore communities. A reference letter describing the volunteerism is recommended.
