LUMOSITYS BRAIN TRAINER IS
designed to work on many cognitive skills such
as visual memory, visual attention, flexibility,
processing speed, reaction time, directionality
and executive functioning. Sets of games train
for certain diagnosis such as ADD, traumaticbrain injury, and stroke.
Two gamescircles and color match
are free for the first five trials. When the trial
expires, the app is available for $9.99 a year,
$4.99 for three months or $6.99 for six months.
For the iPad and iPod, the app store offers
the Brain Trainer Unlimited application for a
onetime fee of $49.99. It is also available to
purchase on a computer with a lifetime mem-
bership of $300.00, with other monthly and
yearly options available.
The full version includes 35 daily training
sessions of seven brain games. The Lumositygames have been developed and researched
by neuroscientists at top universities such
as Stanford, USCF and Berkeley. The games
have been developed and studied to work on
certain brain functions and for recovery from
certain brain injuries. They are rated for use
with ages 4 and up.
Circles works on thinking faster, reaction
time, and speeding up cognitive processes.
The player is presented a series of circles one
at a time for a few seconds before moving to
another series. The player has to decide if the
two series are a match.
Color match works on mental flexibility, cog-
nitive control, executive functioning, avoiding
errors, impulse control and resisting tempta-
tion. A word is presented at the top of a color
followed by a different color word presented
below. The player has to decide if the lower
word is the same color as the color that is writ-
ten above it.
Memory matrix exercises the working
memory. The game consists of tiles and the
ones that are shaded in are to be remembered
by the player after looking at them for a fewseconds. More tiles are added each time the
player succeeds.
The app will keep up with the high scores so
the player can compete against themselves or
friends. Total points scored after sessions as well
reaction times, total number correct and per-
cent accuracy is also available to the player.
These games are recommended daily to
be successful in making positive changes to
the brain.
Many students have iPods and home com-
puters, so this could be recommended by the
occupational therapist for home programs forparents who are willing to invest in them. One
of my children loved these games so much
that he used his own money and bought the
