Lulu StewartI am especially drawn to visceral environments in the human body and the landscape we live in and architecture plays a big influence in my work . Making art for me is a communication between the medium and visualizing cellular models that float, and become interwoven-connected.

I create land scrapes with paint, paper, ink or collage in 2-D and 3-D that beg the question, is the art a representation of nature, science, organic matter or is it something unto it’s self. I like to think I’m creating environments that transport viewers into a fantastic universe where micro and macro systems converge.

I began my artistic studies in metallurgy and jewelry design in 1995 at the Oregon College of Arts and Crafts and went on to study film at the Portland Film Center, and photography at Portland State for a short period.

In1998 I founded the Newer Collective, a bi monthly film and music salon that

brought together international and local short films by the likes of Miranda July as well as bands Sleater Kinney and Papillion.

In 1998 and 1999 I produced three video, performance and sculpture installation’s, “Molecular Four”, “Incubator” and “Flood Gate.”

In 2001 I moved to Los Angeles where my work has maintained a consistent visual thread of abstracting layers and molecular forms with paint, paper, and collage.

My work is not a literal translation of natural systems but the extraction and deconstruction of ideas and images loosely based on nature and cells. I am interested in the interconnected systems of our environment and fascinated by the fundamental relationship between the exquisitely complex molecular world and our connection to it.
