LESSON ONE THE BIBLE IS IMPORTANT

    Introduction

Christians are instructed to study theBible because it is a book filled withthe words of God. If it was just the

words of men and nothing more, itwould be a waste of time. But theBible is filled with vital informationabout how to be saved and how tolive a life pleasing to God. It is at thefoundation of true Christianity.

The Bible is the Word of God. Millionsupon millions of people havebelieved it. People have even died

    for the Word of God.

    Cranmers martyrdom

The Bible has been treasured by thepoor and by the rich. It is the mostloved and the most hated book onthe Earth. It has shaped the destinyof nations, so that kings and queenshave sworn to uphold it. Others have

treated it with spite, and have doneeverything in their power to destroyit. But it cannot be destroyed.

    Queen Elizabeth IIs coronation

    Sanctify them through thy truth:

thy word is truth. (John 17:17).

When Jesus prayed that believerswould be sanctified (made holy), Heknew that it could only happen bythe Word. It would have to be apresent Word. There is no way anon-existing, hidden or far awayWord could change a persons life.Gods intention must be to get His

    Word to believers.

If the Word has power to sanctify, and is true, it cannot have any errorsin it. It must be inerrant. It cannothave any failings in it. It must tellthe full truth. It must be infallible. Ithas to be clean and pure if it has thepower to make holy.

Thy word isvery pure: therefore thyservant loveth it. (Psalm 119:140).

The Bible, which contains the holyScripture, is fully pure. It should notbe hard to love it, because it is pureand reliable. Everything it says isright, and we should want to live itout.

    Gods revealed will

So shall my word be that goethforth out of my mouth: it shall notreturn unto me void, but it shallaccomplish that which I please, andit shall prosper inthethingwhereto Isent it. (Isaiah 55:11).

God has not hidden His will. He hasnot kept the knowledge of salvationfrom the world. It is right there inthe Bible. His Word has all that isnecessary or sufficient for salvation.

The Bible does not show allknowledge, but it shows what Godintends to show.

If God could not do what He said, Hewould be weak. But if God does whatHe says, He is showing that He isalmighty.

And God would not give His Word, only to have His Word lost or onlyhalf come to pass in the Earth. If Hegave it, He fully intended that itwould come to all men before the

end of the world, and that it wouldbe able to fully change the lives ofpeople anywhere.

For this cause also thank we Godwithout ceasing, because, when yereceived the word of God which yeheard of us, ye received itnot astheword of men, but as it is in truth, theword of God, which effectually

worketh also in you that believe.(1 Thessalonians 2:13).

If God has given His Word, then menmust receive it. They must accept it.

The Bible is a divine book. It cannotbe treated as anything else.

Some people might not like the rulesof the Bible, because they go againstthe world. But Gods words are right. And people have an inward witness, their conscience, which indicates thatthe Bible is right.

    Study the Word

The Bible has some easy parts, andsome parts which are deep. Goddoes not want us to just know Biblestories, or about the Bible, but togrow in our knowledge of His Word.

As newborn babes, desire thesincere milk of the word, that yemay grow thereby (1 Peter 2:2).

    There are certainly some things

which are dark in the Bible.

A wise man will hear, and willincrease learning; and a man ofunderstanding shall attain unto wisecounsels: To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words ofthe wise, and their dark sayings.

    (Proverbs 1:5, 6).

As we apply ourselves to the Word ofGod, and pray for Gods help, andlisten to and read good teachings,we are going to find great wisdom. The Spirit of God will illuminate ourunderstanding.

    Study to shew thyself approved

unto God, a workman that needethnot to be ashamed, rightly dividingthe word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15).

There are so many passages ofScripture which show how importantit is for us to learn it. If we do notlearn, we will stumble about, or havewrong ideas. God wants us to knowHis truth, He wants us to walk on in

His way. This means that we shouldregularly read the Bible and alsotake heed of proper preaching andteaching.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Psalm119:105).

    No Bible contradictions

Some people say that there arecontradictions in the Bible. But theysay this because they have notstudied it properly, and oftenbecause they want to believe lies.

Here is one example, where twoverses appear to give differentinformation.

    Two and twenty years old wasAhaziah when he began to reign;

and he reigned one year inJerusalem. And his mothers namewas Athaliah, the daughter of Omriking of Israel. (2 Kings 8:26).

Forty and two years old was

Ahaziah when he began to reign, andhe reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mothers name also wasAthaliahthe daughter of Omri. (2 Chronicles22:2).

The question is, if Ahaziah reignedfor one year, why does one versesay that he was 22 and the otherthat he was 42 years old?

The answer is that the people ofJerusalem made Ahaziah king withhis father when he was twenty-two,and only reigned independently as aking for one year when he was forty-two years old.

This diagram shows Ahaziahs life, and when he was reigning for twenty

years as a regent under his fatherand under the control of the peopleof Jerusalem, and when he thenreigned on his own for one year.

    Ahaziahs lifetime in years

    In the first passage, a semi-colon ;

divides the information, Two andtwenty years old was Ahaziah whenhe began to reign; and he reignedone year in Jerusalem.Just becauseit does not mention the twenty yearsdoes not mean that it is wrong. Whatwe find is complementary notcontradictory information.

Most accusations are a lot easier

    than this to refute.

    Bible prophecy

The Bible contains many propheciesabout things which have proved tobe very accurate.

It is astonishing how manyprophecies about Jesus appear in theOld Testament which were fulfilled inthe New Testament.

If these are right, and many otherprophecies have also been fulfilled, then we should be confident thatother things which the Bible saysshall occur in the future are going tocome to pass also.

For whatsoever things were writtenaforetime were written for ourlearning, that we through patienceand comfort of the scriptures mighthave hope. (Romans 15:4).

There is a purpose in what waswritten in the Bible. We must see

that God has written the Bible for ustoday. It was not just for peopleliving in the days Moses or in thedays of David or in the days of theApostles. It was not just forChristians hundreds of years ago. Itis a sure Word of prophecy which hascome to us.

There is no way that the prophets

could have made up where Jesuswould be born, or at what time, orall the things He would do. But if theprophets were speaking from God,and were writing the truth, then theBible must be exactly what it claimsto be.

Some people try and say that theBible was written after events, or

was tampered with so that theprophecies would fit events. But thediscovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls

that were preserved in desert cavescontaining documents which datefrom before the time of Christ, shows that the writings of theprophets are really from ancienttimes.

    Further study

Psalm 119 talks about the Word ofGod. It shows that it is not a book ofsuggestions, but law which must beobeyed. It is Gods law.

There are words which the Bible usesto describe Gods law which youmight not fully understand. Read thesurrounding passage to find themeaning. Then you may look up theword in the Oxford English Dictionary(which is the best record of words).

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.(Psalm 119:11).

The Word of God does not only existin a book, but it should be put intothe heart. The heart means the innerman, our soul and our spirit, whichincludes our mind.

We should take the time to read andhear the Scripture, think about it andalso memorize some verses. After

all, it is Gods Word, and it makes uswise. Of course, it is only good if weactually obey God and do it.
