" The Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) describe what is essential for Victorian students to achieve from Prep to Year 10. They provide a whole school curriculum planning framework that sets out learning standards for schools to use to plan their teaching and learning programs, including assessment and reporting of student achievement and progress.”(VCAA, 2006).

When I begun studying in 2005 VELS was being introduced, all of my lessons are structured around VELS and I have a strong understanding of the Early Years Literacy Program (EYLP) as well as Progression Points and benchmarks for students.

“The Early Years Literacy Program is a proactive, intervention initiative, focusing on improving the literacy skills, dispositions and outcomes of all young children leading to the achievement of the program’s targets” (Department of Education, South Australia”.

“It is clear that Luke is most confident when it comes to teaching Literacy. His explanations are clear and he roams around the class well”Sue Dalrymple, 2008

Posters I created for a class report on Milk. We brainstormed the ideas together and then brainstormed what a report should have in it.

Five Food Groups work completed by Grade 3 students.

To engage students in literacy we can use a wide range of multi modal resources, such as•Listening posts•Computers•Video Cameras•Picture Story Books•Fiction Story Books•Interactive Whiteboards Sample lesson plans for

up to help remind the students on milk facts.

“Luke has consistently created and implemented games and lessons to suit each group and their needs” Sue Dalrymple, 2008

Sample Lesson Plans from the Numeracy lessons I have taught.

A worksheet I created where the students use dice and counters, after rolling the dice the students share the counters into different groups.

One of the worksheets I created for the topic of Time, using a real timetable.

A Fraction Paddocks Maths game sheet which I created where the students ‘race’ against each other to try and fill as many squares as possible using multiplication.

A sample lesson plan.

Numeracy is an important part of Education and I already have a large range of experience in teaching it. During 2008 I worked closely with Maths consultant Sue Fine in creating engaging and fun activities for the students which cater to their “level”. I also adopted Maths rotations.

“Luke clearly enjoys Maths and it shows in his teaching”.Lesley Cox, 2007

I have a vast range of experience with ICT which I feel that I can bring into the classroom. I took IT Management in Year 11 and 12 and my Major was Information Technology throughout my tertiary education. I also worked at a technology helpdesk for IBM for a year in 2005. During my employment with IBM I specialised in helping people out with basic computer problems. During my employment I aided users with different types of computer experience, which will be beneficial when I step into the classroom.

As ICT is my major I have taken several ICT lessons across multiple year levels, including Prep and Grade Six. Several examples of my lessons can be found on the following two pages.

One of the open ended ICT activities I gave to Grade Sixers who were beginning to use computers.

Luke’s ICT lessons were engaging for the students. They enjoyed learning about all of the different things that they can use Word for.Bill Porter, 2007

“Assessment is the ongoing process of gathering, analysing and reflecting on evidence to make informed and consistent judgements to improve future student learning.” (Department of Education, 2008). There are three different types of assessment: assessment for learning, assessment as learning and assessment of learning.

“Luke joined the class teacher for a cluster meeting on writing assessment and requested further information on the outcomes of that meeting”Lesley Cox, 2007

" Quick Vic Reporting is the software package chosen by the Victorian Government for the implementation of a new system of student reporting, based on the new Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). “

During my last placement I was able to sit in on a Professional Development session which was an introduction to Quick Vic for beginning teachers. I was also able to see the program in action while my teacher wrote reports, which means I am quite familiar with Quick Vic.

“Whilst teaching Luke has been responsible for the tone of the room and the overall behaviour of the class. He has calmly and competently dealt with behaviours ranging from inattention in class to serious playground disturbances” Sue Dalrymple, 2008

My behaviour management policy is that of assertive discipline. Assertive discipline is about “catching students being good, recognising and supporting them when they behave appropriately and on a consistent basis letting them know you like what they are doing” (Kizlik, 2008).

I have noticed that by using assertive discipline in the classroom the students react well and respond well to the positive feedback. Using assertive discipline means that I am not spending most of my time yelling at students, but educating them.

“Luke has established good routines for the weekly planning of work programs” Sue Dalrymple, 2008

Throughout placement I begun using a planning template and then went on to develop my own, which can be found above. It can be modified easily and I can see what I have planned for the class simply.

“Multiple intelligences is an educational theory, first developed by Howard Gardner, that describes an array of different kinds of "intelligences" exhibited by human beings”. There are eight different kinds of multiple intelligences.

How to learn or teach anything eight different ways:Words (linguistic inteligenceNumbers or logic (logical-mathematical intelligence Pictures (spatial intelligence)Music (musical intelligence)Self-Reflection (intrapersonal intelligenceA Physical Experience (bodily-kinesthetic intelligence)A Social Experience (Interpersonal intelligence) and / orAn experience in the natural world (naturalist intelligence)

The de Bono Hats system is a thinking tool for group discussions. There are six different hats which each represent a different viewpoint. They can be used in the classroom to expand the thoughts of children and to get them to think from a different viewpoint.

The White hat represents facts, the red hat represents emotions, the black hat represents negative judgement, the yellow hat represents positive judgement, the green hat represents alternatives and creativity and the blue hatRepresents process control, or thinking aboutthinking.
