packaging producti wish to experiment with unique forms of packaging, with both the product package, as well as carry bags. Though I wish to en-sure that a relationship can be forged be-tween the product and its packaging. Look-ing into existing light bulb packaging, and asking the question, is this the best form? It is recognisable by all whom have even gone to the shops to buy light bulbs. It is a simple packaging form and in terms of transport, the simple rectangular form ensures many can be packed with no unwanted space in ship-ments.

When focusing on inspirations around light, look no further than the light bulb. It is the beacon of model technology which we all use today. However the idea of using the lightbulb as a case for candle light has al-lowed me to experiment with the form, but with some constraints. The constraints being that the candle must have a whole for heat and smoke to flow out. Also where is this candle holder to be located within a given environment.

I wanted to investigate the shattering light bulb as it is something that creates a unique form, something that looks different every time you see it. I think this is a perfect example for my candle light bulb as the hole created from the shatter means that a tea light can be plced in-side easily.

The melting light bulb is something that can relate to a candle, as they both associate melting. However I will need to experiment with how this could potentially be layed out, as the lightbulb is usually vertically alligned which would mean, balance would become a major factor especially when adding a melt-ing candle to the mix. I must ensure that the candle holder is safe when dealing with heat and a flame.

When focusing on my package design, pre-viously I had expressed interest in areas where packaging is an art form. However with my specific product, I wanted to ensure that the same bond existed from the product with its packaging. Hereby I have opted to build my packaging around the existing light bulb package, as my product itself, replicates the aesthetics of a light bulb.

The sketching above is a representation of what I envision the product will look like. The idea is to cross the characteristic of melting, from the candle, and combine it with the form of a light source, in this case, a light bulb.

The idea of the light bulb tea light holder is to expand on the idea of the product being syn-onymous. Hereby creating a tea light bulb.

The sketching on this page represents some of my ideas associated with form experimen-tation, as well as focusing on the idea of light reflection and refraction. To allow the product to create its own mood and environment.

This allowed me to think outside the phsical characteristics of the product itself and think of its potential surroundings.

However I think the graphics appear juvenile and I think it down grades the appearance of the product itself.

This was an example I found relating to packaging, it would take my design further as this is another layer to the product. This would be a carry bag, that would hold the product already in its box. However I think this takes away from the relationship between the bulb and its bulb box. So i have de-cided that this is not going to be taken further.

This is my final individual logo de-sign. It was designed to consist of the product itself, a light bulb,and tea light holder.The name ‘SYN’ comes from the idea of a synonym or that something is syn-onymous, where my product is focused around light. Two main sources of light are the candle, and the light bulb. I wanted to link the two to my product in name as I have tried to design my product to incorporate both products designs into one object.

The following are two examples of my final logo, which is to be used for the class group. This would appear as a simple icon of all of the students packaging. Simply to develop an ini-tial branding and relationship between all of the products, no matter what the products intended market.

There are 3 materials that are use in my product and packaging.

The first is Aluminide, this is a material that is constructed using 3d priting services. It replicates the look and feel of solid metal fittings and is to be used as the base of the light bulb. Hereby replicating the aesthetics of the light bulb fitting.Aluminide is a 3d printing resin that incorporates amulinium flakes to give the feel and appearance of a metalic object.

The Recycled card I am using, is .7mm thick recycled card as it is a material that hasnt had any additives to its colour or properties. This is an important component when thinking that the product is to be sold at a craft market. The importance of one off pieces and natural colours it essential. The simple box design is used to case the product itself.

I have chosen to use 3d printing for my product as it has allowed my product to come to life, particularly as the form is is complex and not easily replicated by hand modeling. Remembering that the product is to hold a tea light candle, it is essential that the materials used for this product are able to withstand high levels of heat. Therefore I have opted to get my models printed using a combination of white ceramics, that come already glazed and also a satin black finish to diversify my product range.

3d printing is one of the processes tnat I wished to use to develop my product this semester. I was par-ticularly intrigued by how the process worked, as well as the results that were now made possible. This additive process allowed my to develop the product and tinker with refinements that would only arise once I had crafted a physical model. Using the 3d desktop UP printers I was able to gage a greater understanding of the essential components of my product. These models were completed, and some also failed (pictured below), using an ABS filament. These were greater for refining my design, though could not be used for the final model, as the material could not hold the heat given off by the candle light. Therefore I had outsourced my 3d printing to shapeways where the models would be completed using Aluminide and ceramics, to ensure the product could absorb the heat without warping.

The photos taken on this page show my prod-uct in use. As witnessed, they case the tea light succesfully and look great on a dining table or in a display cabinet or anywhere else the user thinks they should belong.

These are the final submission models for week 14, I have had an issue with shapeways which has been sorted, but for the time being, the mod-els will not make it in time for submission, I have spoken to my lecturer Nigel, and this has been sorted.
