The quality of mobility and the international dimension The Student Exchange Office for student mobility is a centralized structure from the very beginning of the Erasmus program. It takes care of student exchanges for all departments at LUISS Guido Carli.

The Erasmus and exchange programs have had a deep and stimulating impact on the whole University. They have played an important role in enhancing the International dimension of the institution.

LUISS boasts a distinguished tradition in education and is now enjoying a time of considerable growth and positive change in an increasingly open international environment. It provides the highest quality education and gives an international scope to the study of social sciences.

The use of the ECTS system has improved the transparency and clarity of student qualifications. The procedures have been extended to other international exchanges and the system has been used to build programs in partnership with other universities.

The increasing number of incoming students has encouraged the production of informational materials in English and the development of a web site in English, and not only of the pages related to the Student Exchange Office.

Some years ago LUISS started to offer a few courses in English in order to attract more international and Erasmus students. The university today offers full degree programs in English at all levels. LUISS’s rector is committed to keeping LUISS a first-rate university and to improving its results, especially at an international level, by increasing worldwide collaboration, strengthening postgraduate programs, expanding research opportunities, recruiting new faculty all over the international arena, and tailoring our curricula to the evolving needs of the global scenario. Study abroad programs are organized one year in advance. All the information in English for partner universities is updated and sent to the institutions several months before the student exchanges take place.

The LUISS Student Exchange Office has standardized and simplified all the procedures for Erasmus and exchange students. All internal administrative procedures are channeled through the Office. Many aspects are taken care of automatically by the offices involved, such as course enrollment and exam registration.

Erasmus and exchange students receive materials, information and support well before arrival.

Accommodation is guaranteed to all Erasmus and exchange students that apply by the deadline.

Orientation sessions, visits of the campuses and social activities are organized after the students arrive. The students receive an information package (in English and Italian), a university ID badge and a LUISS email address.

The first period of an exchange abroad is difficult for many students. Many practical matters are problematic and can become an obstacle. When they arrive, students do not know the country and often do not speak the language very well. They may experience culture shock and feel homesick. Moreover, they do not know the Italian university system, the procedures and rules of the host university. For these reasons, the staff of the Student Exchange Office takes great care of each student with face-to-face counseling and support and does the best to make them feel at home, with the help of the student associations.

Erasmus and exchange students receive support and advice for practical and academic problems during their whole period of study abroad, whenever they need it. The office is open to students every day from Monday to Friday, as well as on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The enthusiasm that staff and faculty put into their work and the attention we place on assisting outgoing and incoming students is a quality and strength we offer. Studying at LUISS means belonging to a dynamic and international community which shares interests, passions and experience. The University’s lifestyle is designed to promote integration among students, as well as active participation and direct relations with professors.

ESN Roma LUISS This is a recently established section of one of the biggest interdisciplinary student associations in Europe: the Erasmus Student Network (ESN). The volunteers who created and are running this section are proudly committed to the social and practical integration of international students coming to LUISS University and are actively working under the ESN mission’s principle “students helping students“.

Office Via di Trasone, 56 c/o Collegio Universitario Don Nicola Mazza

Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

http://esnromaluiss.it/

The goal of the association is to make each exchange student’s time in Rome and at LUISS University unforgettable by supporting diversity, promoting an international outlook and involving the students in many activities. ESN also provides relevant information and encourages the future exchange students to gain international experience and insight into different cultures.

Cost of living Money

On January 1

st, 2002 the Euro was introduced as legal currency in Italy, substituting the Italian ”Lira”.

Banks – opening hours: Monday to Friday; 8.30 a.m.- 1.30 p.m. and 2.45 p.m. - 3.45 p.m. We recommend going

to the bank in the morning. If you wish to open a bank account in Italy you will first have to obtain your Codice Fiscale (see n.9 TAXPAYER’S CODE NUMBER).

Credit cards are widely accepted in restaurants, hotels, railway stations and shops. You may use a credit card

(Visa, MasterCard, American Express, etc) to obtain cash in Euros from Automatic Teller Machines – ATMs – available in every bank at all times. Most cards have a limit on the amount of cash that can be withdrawn.

We recommend that students bring along a sufficient amount of Euros or travelers checks to cover immediate necessities (keep in mind that there are considerable delays involved in transferring money to Italy from abroad!).

Accommodation LUISS Guido Carli has a university residence but it is not open to exchange students. There are only 80 places available and priority is given to LUISS Guido Carli students that need it and that meet specific selection criteria. Most Erasmus students live in private apartments with Italian or international roommates in the neighborhoods near the University. The Student Exchange Office does not take direct responsibility for providing accommodation. A private organization takes care of it on the basis of the web application forms received (by the Student Exchange Office of LUISS Guido Carli) by May 31. The average cost is between €350/400 for a place in a double room and €450/600 for a single room per month plus utilities (telephone, electricity, heating, gas). Ask your coordinator for a copy of the accommodation documents. Please read the booking conditions carefully, follow the instructions and complete the application form. Students that wish to take care of housing themselves are advised to come to Rome at least one week before the arrival date. Useful links for accommodation:

Insurance Erasmus students All exchange students are required to have an insurance policy covering medical care and third party liability. For students from countries that are members of the European Union some medical costs are generally covered by their national health service. All European students should have the European Health Insurance Card – EHIC.

Visa and insurance for non-EU citizens: Visa application for non-EU citizens

Non-EU citizens should go to the Italian diplomatic offices (embassy or consulate) and apply for a Study Visa as soon as they receive their letter of admission from LUISS Guido Carli University. There is a list of Italian embassies and consulates on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website: http://www.esteri.it/MAE/EN/Ministero/LaReteDiplomatica/Ambasciate/default.htm To apply for a permit of stay, students must bring the following when they arrive.

A declaration of sufficient means of support An original bank statement Private health insurance valid in Italy Please note that private insurance from home countries is not accepted at the Questura, unless an official document from the Italian embassy or consulate for the home country states the insurance’s validity. Public Transportation

Rome has an integrated public transport network operated by the companies ATAC – Cotral – FS- Ferrovie dello Stato. The system includes a network of metro, bus, tram and metro-type rail service.

Bus and tram services (ATAC) cover the centre of the city and the suburbs. They operate from 5.30 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. Night bus service is available from midnight to 5.30 a.m. Night busses are recognized by the number followed by the letter N (notturno).

The price of a single ticket, valid for 100 minutes, is €1.50 €. The price of a monthly ticket, Intera Rete, valid for all buses and the metro, is about €35. Monthly tickets last for

the calendar month, so we recommend buying them at the beginning of the month. Note: Single or monthly tickets must be bought before boarding the bus. They can be purchased at ATAC kiosks (at the end of the line), newsstands, tabacchi (tobacco shops) or from automatic ticket machines. Single tickets must be validated when you begin your journey. Validation machines are located at the rear of buses and trams, at the entry gates of metro stations and within the entrance area of all rail stations.

The underground service is run by COTRAL, which also runs extra-urban buses. There are two lines, A and B, which connect extra-urban and peripheral zones with the center. The cost of a single ticket is €1.

Metro line A runs from Battistini Station, situated northwest of the city, to Anagnina Station in the southwest.

Trains circulate from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. (until 1:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays). Metro line B runs from Rebibbia station, situated northeast of the city, to Laurentina Station to the south. Trains

circulate from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. (until 1:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays). The only station where you can transfer from one line to the other is Termini Station.
