INTERVIEW TO MANUELA TOSELLI

for Nocivelli Award 2017

Could you analyse the themes and the contents of the work that you have presented at the Nocivelli Award? And could you please illustrate the modus operandi that led to the creation of your artwork?

The work that I have presented at the Premio Nocivelli is a painting realised by the overlaying of different types of natural silk. It is called “Presenze Sottili #7”. It’s part of a cycle of artworks in which I analyze a specific action, which is usual in our daily life, even if we are not fully aware of it. In a symbolic and conceptual way, I observe the weight that a person, a gesture or a situation takes on from the moment in which it begins to manifest itself, without being able to perceive its presence, until the point in which it is too late. In order to realise that, I use the silk, the medium that characterizes all my work. In fact, layer by layer, the silk becomes more and more consistent and takes shape. “Presence Sottili” represent all those things, circumstances or people, that are beyond our control just because actually we do not give them the right weight and importance. Given the lightness and impalpability of individual meetings, we never measure until the moment in which we feel oppressed by their burden. It is a tacit assent of our reason that we remain victims.

LUISACATUCCIGALLERY

At the Luisa Catucci Gallery, we believe in the power of inspiring art and culture.

Humanity’s emancipation and evolution, since the beginning of time, is reached by feeding the soul and brain with stimulating nourishment, in order to open more doors hidden in our brains, to become better beings, better societies and thus a better planet. Art is an outstanding power food. We truly value its fundamental role of instigator for reflections and feelings out of the ordinary.

Based in Berlin, in the newly trend neighbourhood of Schillerkiez Neukölln, just a few meters away from the unique park of Tempelhofer Feld, Luisa Catucci Gallery, is more then just a conventional art gallery; it places itself as one of the fundamental elements of the area’s cultural turmoil.

The gallery’s program focuses mainly on art exhibitions, inspired by ecological, social and existential matters, through a variety of media, including photography, video, painting, sculpture and printmaking.

Beside the exhibitions, Catucci organises regularly multidimensional events, in order to bind art with talks, culture and enjoyment, supporting the vibrant spirit of the town and the area.
