Memory Captures

Variety of sizes

I started collecting these Bank notes after I received what was then foreign to me my first non-

New Zealand Bank note. It was the fundamental pleasure of being able to capture a piece of a

country, something new and foreign to me, and being able to place it inside my exclusive

children’s treasure box. As me and the family embark on adventures throughout the years, the

concept of capturing a foreign object developed into an impulsive habit of collecting the last Bank

note we carried on the last day as a token, souvenir or for me “memory captures”, a physical

representation of the country I could look back on and cherish the families’ joyful laughs,

memories and exciting adventures till the very last day.

This is my collection of Bank notes I started in 2003, at the young age of 6 after receiving my

first bank note from a teacher.

When we first arrived in New Zealand in 2003 from Uganda Africa, everything was new,

everything was different, and everything was exciting, so being a 6-year-old I would often go

off to explore. It was my impulsive curiosity of wanting to learn and know about everything,

that intrigued me to listen with awe in class about the vastness of Countries, cultures, and

people from around the world. I was overwhelmed and my 6-year-old self couldn’t

comprehend the number of different places I could visit and explore, so my teacher handed

me an Australian bank note as a prize for being able to memorize and name all the different

flags.

I remember running to my mother and showing her my prize. I showed her how different it

was from the Ugandan and New Zealand banknotes we had, and told her how funny it was

that this came from a faraway place in the world and how important it was to them. So, we

sat there admiring the differences in the designs, color, and writings. I was amazed by how

different they each were, and how these pieces of colorful paper were important to millions

of people. From that day on, I wanted to see and have each countries bank note so I could

sit with my mother, and admire the different designs printed on them. Throughout the years

my collection began to grow, but so did its meaning and purpose.

Starting from 2007, me and the family began to embark on journeys to destinations around

the world. we started off on a family trip to Singapore, then Vietnam, then America. Along

the way, I held on to the bank notes from each country we left and each time I would be

fascinated by the different colors, faces, and materials used. I would end up showing them

all to the family when we arrived back home that it became a habit for us all to sit together,

and admire the designs. Because it was valuable and represented the country, we as a

family began holding on to the last bank notes we carried, and instead of buying t-shirts or

fridge magnets, the bank notes become our family souvenirs.

In 2015, we traveled to United Arab Emirates, Kenya, and South Sudan. I received a South

Sudanese bank note from my biological father. Struggling to find what could be a significant

piece to represent the most amazing experience we shared together, I kept the bank note. It

was already the perfect representation of South Sudan and it was given to me by my father,

so it would signify the experience.

My most recent bank note is from Zimbabwe, which was given to me in 2017, by a fellow

classmate upon hearing about the collection. In total, I now have 17 different bank notes, all

different sizes from around the world.

A mess of all our family bank notes.

The bank notes have now developed into more than just a token. Those 17 colorful pieces of

paper become more than just representing a country to admire, they became my memory

capsules that I would collect to cherish memories and significant times in my life. Like the

Zimbabwean bank note I was given, it has now become a significant item because, it would

symbolize this huge milestone in my life of beginning my career at Unitec, and developing

new friendships.

So, what’s next and what do I plan to do with the bank notes? I have planned to complete

the list of countries I want to visit written on my bucket list from 2008. I was pleasantly

surprised when I was told that several of the bank notes I had were rare since it was no

longer in use, which intrigued me to want to complete my collection of all 196 countries.

How amazing would it be to hold on to these bank notes that could all one day become rare

and historic? Not only would I be able to show my family and laugh at the times we traveled

together, I would be able to show them to curious friends or further into the future when

they are no longer in use. I have chosen these 15 bank notes to be displayed in a gallery

because of their unique imaging.
