Key conventions In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions

of real media products? The key conventions of a music magazine:

• Large TitleThis must draw attention to the magazine, through the use of bright colours and font

type. The title is often large to catch your eye, and is also to distinguish this magazine from others of a similar kind.

• Cover linesThese are to give the reader an idea of what they can find within the magazine. Cover

Lines will usually cover a wide range of subjects within the genre and be the most appealing to customers. They are also used to intrigue readers and make them want to buy the magazine.

• Contact detailsContact details are usually in the form of a telephone number, fax number or website. • Strap linesStrap lines add extra information to the cover, and usually contain band names, or free

items included in the magazine, eg posters, discounts. • Main imageThis will be relevant to the magazine and the genre of music, and is usually of a band or

solo artist who is of high demand at that time. There will usually be some kind of interview or story about this person inside the magazine.

• Main Image cover lineThis is a reference, or quote to the picture, will most likely be eye catching and intriguing

to the reader. • Date & barcodeThis is for the readers benefit, and so they can keep track on each issue, making sure

they do not miss one. The barcode is on the front cover so it is easy to locate.

How did you attract your audience?

Page 4: Lucy Blumberg Evaluation

I have incorporated all of these key conventions into my magazine front cover, as seen in the image. I chose the catchy title name ‘stargirl’ and used the feminine colour of pink to attract my target audience. I decided to put the masthead at the bottom of the page as this differentiates it from other magazines. The cover lines that I have chosen are aimed to intrigue readers and make them want to buy the magazine, and I have used the words ‘hottest’ and ‘cool’ to make the magazine appeal to a young teenage audience. I have included popular band names in the strap line again to attract young girls, and to give the effect that the magazine includes a large amount of information, so buyers think that they are getting a lot for their money.

All contents pages show the audience/reader information on what the magazine includes, and is about. Contents pages are used as the brief of the magazine. It doesn't need to be fancy, however it is important that it is legible to the reader. It also gives the reader easy access to any story or piece they want to read, and they can locate the page quickly.

I have used the same colour theme for my contents, as my front cover. The writing is clear to read and the topics have been divided up into sections so the reader can choose what they would like to look at. The main picture is of the person I have written my double page spread on, so this magazine issue has been largely based around her. She is looking into the camera and therefore engaging with the reader, and I have used a black and white image to differentiate it to others in the magazine, and her name is in pink as stands out in front of the image. I have also included an editors letter which gives the magazine a more personal feel to it, almost as if the editor is introducing the magazine to you as you read it. The page as a whole looks really positive, and I have again opted for youthful language such as ‘cringe’ and ‘hottest’ to appeal to the target audience. Instead of using the word ‘contents’ I have chosen to use ‘This Week’ as I think it sounds less formal and more appropriate for young girls.

Double page spread

For my double page spread I have used various pictures of the person I interviewed, one with her friend, to show that she spends a lot of time with the people she loves. This sets a good example to youngsters reading the magazine, as many stars who first get into fame get swallowed up in it and it ruins their life. I have used the same colour scheme as the cover and contents, and I have also used a rainbow in the background, so the page is attractive and to portray that she is a dreamer.

My media magazines target audience is aimed at teenage girls aged 11 – 13, and would appeal largely to girls who love to gossip, and are first starting to wear make up. The whole magazine comes across as very feminine, and the pink and yellow colour scheme I have used is very stereotypically girly. The magazine also would appeal to young girls wanting to be stars when they are older, or perhaps who have a strong passion for something and they are looking up to ‘Kelli’. I have used about the same amount of text as images in my magazine, and this is because young teenagers don’t often like to read a lot of text, and prefer looking at images. I have used informal language to appeal to my audience, youthful words such as ‘hot’, ‘cool’ and ‘awesome’ are words that teenage girls use daily, so they would be able to relate strongly to the context. I have used various different images, with the ‘star’ in a mixture of different places, to portray that she has a busy and interesting lifestyle, that people would like to read about.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

What is the target audience for your product?

What kind of media institution might distribute your media

product and why?

A magazine company that may be interested in publishing my magazine is called ‘Natmags’. They currently publish women magazines such as Cosmopolitan, and Company, and I think that there is a gap in the market for a young teen music magazine, and they might be interested in attracting young girls, and well as women. My magazine would fit perfectly into their market as they don’t really have much choice on offer for young girls to read at the moment.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this

product?I have used various methods of technology

in the construction and development of my magazine. These include; Microsoft publisher, paint, Gimp, a digital camera, a blog and polls. I have learnt that a blog is a very simple and effective way to record your development, and polls are extremely useful in collecting feedback on your ideas. I found it difficult taking appropriate pictures, and I had to whiten the background of my image for my front cover, on paint which was very time consuming. If I were to do this again I would have used Coral to edit my images, and take my pictures on a white background to make editing easier. I liked using publisher to create my pieces as it was easy to use and edit texts, and it was the most convenient programme to construct a magazine on.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression

from it to the full product?

I feel that I have learnt a lot from my preliminary task, especially in how to make my work look more professional and presentable. I have created my product based largely around my target audience and I found this easy as I was once a young girl so I can relate to what they would like to read about. I have also learnt how to use programmes such as Publisher and Gimp effectively. I have aimed to base everything that I have constructed and written to appeal to young teenage audience, so my magazine would have a best possible chance to sell a lot of copies. I have also learnt that you need to differentiate your magazine to other competing ones, so on my front cover I decided to put the masthead at the bottom of the page, so viewers would have to look at the whole page first to see what the magazine was, thus paying extra attention to it. I have really enjoyed creating this product and making it in my own style.
