SAVE THE DATE Upcoming Grand Rounds
W e just wrapped up our 59th
Annual Winter Clinics in
McCall and had one of the
best faculty line-ups in sev-
eral years. The central topic of Managing
Obesity was so popular, we blew through
our cap of 120 on-site attendees and ended
up adding seats via web conference.
The wide variety of perspectives on this
topic by local and national speakers provid-
ed for, shall we say, a "vigorous" conversa-
tion. Duke University's Dr. Eric Westman
made a strong pitch for a no moderation
low-carb, high-fat (Keto) diet, while Dr.
James Valentine shared about the safety of
bariatric surgery. Drs. Jennifer Shalz and
Amy Baruch pushed lifestyle as medicine,
explored alternative medical therapies, and
gave physicians more education on nutri-
tion in one hour than most probably re-
ceived in all of residency.
Local obesity medicine physician, W. Allen
Rader, spoke on the psychology of weight
loss, and OB fellow Tom Wonderlich cov-
ered the care of obesity during pregnancy.
We finished up on Sunday with an excellent
presentation on the use of probiotics by Dr.
Robert Martindale of OHSU. Thomas Jef-
ferson University's Dr. Salvatore Mangione
provided a world-class presentation on the
need to reintegrate right and left brain
thinking in medicine, and also shared an
Augenblick approach to gait analysis. We
continued our learning with robust dialog in
our deep-dive sessions with some of the
speakers, and Idaho Medical Association’s
Teresa Cirelli shared on how to correctly
bill for obesity management. With the overall conference themed around “Idaho in the Movie’s,” local CEO Rhea Allen of Peppershock Media highlighted
some of the things happening in the film industry in Idaho right now: film festivals, movie making contests, documentaries, and burgeoning opportunities. Unfortunately, due to a large tri-state juniors competition on the slopes, Brundage Mountain would not host our infamous ski races. Nevertheless, prizes were still awarded this year to 17-year-old Anna Gussner, coming out of nowhere to steal the women’s trophy, and Dr. Global Warming winning the men’s ski races. The Travelling Horn “best ski race attempt” was given to Brundage Mountain. Special thanks go to Mayra Ruiz, director of ACMEC, for bringing together a record shattering CME event, and to our sponsors who keep it affordable: MIEC, Washington Trust, IMA Financial Services, DL Evans Bank, Dairy West, and St. Luke’s.

LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS: ACMEC
ONLINE CME ACTIVITY REVIEWERS
ACMEC conducted a needs assessment to
determine if members would like the Grand
Rounds video library to return. The library
would contain online recordings of select
Grand Rounds, consisting mainly of voice-
over PowerPoint. CME credit would be award-
ed to members upon successful completion of
a post-test and evaluation, with the option to
also earn MOC Part 2 points for select activi-
ties.
So far, ACMEC members have expressed an
interest in having these online modules availa-
ble to them. Therefore, ACMEC has started
developing these modules and are almost
ready to deploy them to members, but we
need your help!
We are looking for volunteers to review select
modules to help us troubleshoot any technical
glitches and validate the clinical content. The
estimated time commitment for each module
review is approximately two hours.
Current ACMEC members who are interested
in serving as reviewers should email us at
[email protected] with Online Reviewer in
the subject line. Thanks!
