The PPR Panel is a body of the Authority and is responsible for providing the scientific opinions of the Authority. 21 Members appointed for a 3-year mandate, which can be renewed twice. Supported by WG including external experts with ad-hoc expertise. Independence policy.

Article 29 of the General Food Law: The authority shall issue a scientific opinion: (a) At the request of the Commission, in respect of any

matter within its mission, and in all cases where Community legislation makes the provision for the authority to be consulted

(b) On its own initiative, on matters falling within its mission.

The EU Parliament or a Member State may request the Authority to issue a scientific opinion.

All requests for opinions have to state clearly the Terms of Reference to be addressed and the deadline to adopt the output. All requests need to be approved by the Mandate Review Committee of EFSA before being processed. Negotiation of the deadline possible with the Commission taking into account: Level of priority Extent of the mandate and existing resources The existence of new scientific elements

Achievements of the PPR Panel on the 25th of April 2012:

58 opinions adopted since 2004, of which 41 on generic issues, methodologies and guidance documents

Last adoptions: April 2012: Opinion on the RA of bees and Guidance on Dermal exposure

17 on particular compounds

Last adoption: January 2009: Opinion on the developmental toxicity of deltamethrin 6

Major change for the future: Development of Guidance document will be progressively transferred from the Panel to EFSA: Article 31 of the General Food Law EFSA WGs including experts of PPR Panel and of competent MS organisations
