In 1272 duke W³adys³aw I Opolski built a hunters' castle and a chapel, around which a hamlet sprang up. Having a favourable location on the route from Sewierz to Olesno enabled the town to develop - particularly owing to a boom in trade between Silesia and Ma³opolska. The privileges that

thLubliniec was granted in the 15 century, included, but were not limited to, exclusive rights to brew beer for the local people, as well as weekly fairs and annual cattle fairs, also contributed to the development of the town. Many guilds, established in the

th th15 and 16 centuries, also confirm the growth of the town.

Medieval Lubliniec was ringed with earth embank-ments and surrounded by moats; three gates led to the town: Krakowska (Cracow gate), Oleska (Olesno gate) and Opolska (Opole gate). The layout of the ancient fortifications may be still deduced from the layout of streets which surround the marketplace. From the very beginning of the towns' existence there was a duke's castle in the near neighbourhood. In August 1638 the Polish king W³adys³aw IV Waza was the duke's guest; in 1655, for a short period of time, the castle was a shelter for the painting of Our Lady of Jasna Góra, which had been carried away from Jasna Góra Monastery just before the Swedish siege began.

At first, the Lubliniec region belonged to the dukes of Opole. After the death of Jan II Dobry (1532), the last Piast duke of Opole, the town was possessed by the Habsburgs (1532-1742), and then, until 1922, it was within the borders of Prussia. The town was owned, among others, by members of such gentry' families as Kochcicki, Cellary and de Garnier.

Lubliniec retained its town charter even at the time when other Silesian towns were reduced to the role of so called, fair towns.

In 1812 Franciszek Grotowski, the owner of the Lubliniec estate, bequeathed his property for the establish-ment and maintenance of an orphanage for all orphaned children, regardless of their class and religion. The orphanage opened in 1848; the building erected for this purpose today houses the St Edith Stein School Complex (Zespó³ Szkó³ im. œw. Edyty Stein) run by the Catholic Association of Tutors. In 1893 the Silesian province authorities purchased the Lubliniec castle in order to establish a hospital for the poor, which between 1895 and 1896 was converted into the existing mental hospital. The town developed with the expansion of the railway. Lubliniec became an important rail junction, having good links with the towns of Upper Silesia, Opole, Poznañ, Wroc³aw and Czêstochowa. Trade boomed, industrial plants and various services sprang up.In 1921 the Council of Ambassadors decided to divide Upper Silesia between Germany and the Republic of Poland. The Lubliniec region was assigned to Poland.

thThe 74 Upper Silesian Infantry Regiment, which in 1939 fought fiercely against the German invaders, was stationed in Lubliniec.

Marketplace (Konrad Mañka square) - is surrounded by beautifully renovated th th

19 and 20 centuries tenements. The oldest of them was built between 1792 and 1793 and belonged to the municipal treasurer. On the facade of this tenement there is a tablet devoted to Pawe³ Golaœ, an outstanding commander during the times of the Silesian Uprisings. The present shape of the marketplace was formed after the fire in 1821. Today, as in former times, it's the favourite meeting place of the towns' inhabitants and their guests.

Small Marketplace (Miko³aj Kopernik square) - is a kind of extension of the Market-place. Formerly it was known as salt square or duck square. It was the place where salt, and later corn, was sold. Presently, the Small Marketplace is a municipal square, in the centre of which is a monument to St Edith Stein.

St Miko³aj's Parish Church -situated by the Market, on the ground where in 1300 the former church was erected. The present brick-built church was probably erected in 1576 to 1590; since then it has been rebuilt many times, but some gothic and baroque features have remained. There are two chapels inside the church: the northern - of the Kochcicki family, with the founders' vault, and the southern - early Baroque, St Karol Boro-meusz's chapel of the Cellary family. The chapel is distinguished by the dome with a lantern and internal frescos depicting the life of the saint. The vault (presently not existing) was used as a burial place for members of the Cellary, de Garnier and Grotowski families. In the church tower there is one of the oldest bells in the region, with a gothic inscription.

St Ann's Church - situated at the junction of St Ann's and Pasieczna streets. This wooden framework, charming little church with a shingled roof, in the centre of which there is an ave-bell hexagonal tower, originates back to 1653. The interior of the church hides a splendid baroque altar from

ththe second half of the 17 century, renovated many times and recently, in 1998 to 2002, thoroughly rebuilt owing to the endeavours of the St Ann's Foundation.

Church of the Raising of the Holy Cross founded in approximately 1505 by Jan II Dobry, a duke of Opole, as primarily wooden. From 1843 to 1845 on the same place a brick-built church was erected. During the interwar

thyears it was a garrison church for the soldiers of the 74 Upper Silesian Infantry Regiment, stationed in Lubliniec.

St Stanis³aw Kostka's Church - built from 1928 to 1931, was primarily a chapel of the Oblates Seminary. The church, and the historic orphanage building of Franciszek Grotow-ski's Foundation erected in 1843 to 1848, form one archite-ctural complex. Presently the building houses a school complex (Zespó³ Szkó³ im. œw. Edyty Stein) run by the Catholic Association of Tutors. The replica of the cave of Our Lady of Lourdes and the monument to St Eugene de Maze-nod, the founder of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, are also worth seeing. Stained-glass windows from the 1950's are interesting, too.

Church of St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) - on ¯eromski street there is the world's first parish church of the Patron Saint of Europe - Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Edith Stein, consecrated in 1991. In the church there is a tablet devoted to Lubliniec policemen murdered in Katyñ and Miednoje. The church has stained-glass windows and a sculpture of the patron in the presbytery.

stIn Lubliniec the 1 Special Paratrooper Regiment - “Czer-wone Berety”- is stationed. The History of Lubliniec interweaved with Polish Army troops in 1922, when the town and district of Lubliniec

thfunded a standard for the 74 Upper Silesian Infantry Regiment. In 1986 the 4101 Military Unit, which was moved from the Pomeranian Military District, was stationed on the territory of

ndLubliniec. This Unit continues the tradition of the 2 Paratrooper Battalion, the Special Motor Battalion and the Sabotage Battalion “Parasol”. In 1995 Lubliniec inhabitants again funded a standard to the military unit. In 1996, near the headquarters of the 4101 Military Unit, an obelisk to Polish paratroopers, fighting on all fronts during the Second World War, was erected. The abovementioned famous

th74 Upper Silesian Infantry Regiment, whose traditions are cultivated by the inhabitants, was stationed here. In Secondary School No. 1, named after the Regiment, there is a Memory Chamber, where mementos of the soldiers and commanders of this unit have been gathered.

(“PARATROOPERS”) OF LUBLINIEC

Biking tourism becomes an increasingly popular form of leisure. This inexpensive, ecological way of travelling is gaining more and more followers.

The town, surrounded with forests, numerous water reservoirs and beautiful architectural monuments is a paradise for the lovers of “two wheels”. At the turn of September and October 2007 75 km of entirely new bicycle lanes are to be put at the public's disposal, which, combined with the existing network of lanes, will make Lubliniec one of the most cyclist-friendly towns in Silesia. Furthermore, the town is crossed by bicycle lanes belonging to the “Rowerem po Œl¹sku” (“Biking Silesia”) project, the aim of which is to create a dense and functional network of biking routes and lanes in the whole Silesia. The project consists of 2 international routes, 35 first class and several hundred second class routes. The first class routes begin at, or pass through, towns called regional hubs. Lubliniec is one of such hubs. The following routes intersect in the town:

The Lubliniec Region abounds in architectural monuments. It is worth visiting the beautiful palace and park complexes, located in Czarny Las near WoŸniki (presently a **** hotel), in Koszêcin, which is the seat of the Folk Song and Dance Ensemble “Œl¹sk” (“Silesia”), and in Kochcice, which houses a sanatorium. The Lubli-niec Region boasts of numerous sacred architectural monuments, especially small, wooden churches, chapels

th th thand bell towers from the 17 , 18 and 19 centuries, which prove the rich history of this region.

Among the Region's biggest attractions are, without doubt, nature reserves established to protect the most precious forests, water, swamp and bog flora as well as migratory and breeding bird sanctuaries.

It is worth mentioning that in the Ma³a Panew valley there is the only breeding station of the white-tailed eagle in this part of Upper Silesia. Beautiful forests and numerous ponds encourage tourists to watch the nature, angle and pick the fruits of the forest.
