STORAGE AND HANDLING OF LUBRICANTS

• LUBRICANTS GENERALLY COME IN

– OIL DRUMS

– GREASE DRUMS

Page 3: Lube Storage - points to know!

OIL DRUMS• STEPS TO BE TAKEN AFTER

RECEIPT OF THE LUBES:

• UNLOADING

• STACKING/STORING– INDOORS– OUTDOORS– POSITION:

• HORIZONTAL

• 3’O CLOCK – 9’O CLOCK POSITION

GREASE DRUMS

• INDOOR STORAGE

• VERTICAL STORAGE

• COVERED OUTDOOR TO AVOID RAIN/SUNLIGHT

DISPENSING

• SHOULD BE DISPENSED IN:

– COVERED CONTAINERS– or– DEDICATED CONTAINERS

Depending upon schedule & quantity

LUBRICATION MANAGEMENT

Avoiding Contamination

Good storage and handling practices- Use fork lifts for drum movement OR

- Use hoist/jaws OR

- Unload product through sliding

- Use wooden dunnage on floor while rolling drums.

LUBRICATION MANAGEMENT

To Avoid Contamination Use Separate dispensing equipment

for each grade

- Use of grease guns

- Use of hand pumps

- Colour coding of pipeline and dispensing equipment

in large installations

- Avoid residue in drums by proper dispensing.

LUBRICATION MANAGEMENT

Avoiding ContaminationAutomatic lubrication systems

- Thorough study of existing lubrication system

- Workout feasibility of automatic system

- Install automatic system when found cost beneficial

- Reduces loss, contamination, ensures better

performance

LUBRICATION MANAGEMENT

Avoiding ContaminationProper Maintenance of

dispensing equipment- Dispensing equipment should deliver required quantity

with proper quality.

- Dispenser should not be taken for granted for smooth

operation.

- Periodic calibration of each equipment wherever applicable

LUBRICATION MANAGEMENT

Reduction of Loss

- Stopping all oil leaks

- Collecting,Filtering and reusing unavoidable drips

- Adjusting lubrication system for right feed

- Avoiding overfilling the systems

LUBRICATION MANAGEMENT

Reduction of loss- Stop all oil leaks

- Leakage most common enemy of proper

lubrication management

- One drop per second can cause wastage of 2 KL per annum

- Exercise regular surveillance to identify leaks

- Rectify leaks by replacing seals etc.

LUBRICATION MANAGEMENT

Reduction of lossCollecting, filtering and reusing

unavoidable drips

- Put containers/half cut barrels for collecting leaked

lubricant

- Collect centrally and please ensure different grades

Do not mix up.

- Filter properly and reuse.
