First and foremost, let me extend my heartfeltappreciation for the outstanding support TheLutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia

(LTSP) receives from you — its graduates, friends, congregations, synods, and everyone else who sacrifices tomake its mission in education possible. Thank YOU!

The three special stories herein highlighting theministries and giving of Romeo Dabee ’05; David Rowe’81; and Dick Grove ’64, his spouse, Nancy, and ourdevoted donor, Irma Wright, are self-explanatory. They say a great deal about the challenges of ministry today indifferent settings, and about what your generosity hasmade possible in the preparation of our graduates and thedifference they are making.

As I read about Romeo’s diligent pastoral ministry tothe scurrying passengers and busy employees at JFKAirport, regarded as a global gateway with its 42-milliontravelers each year, I couldn’t help thinking that theseminary too has served as an international portal, with somany graduates who have served all over the world. Ournew Dean, Dr. J. Jayakiran Sebastian, brings richinternational experience to his post, succeeding Dr. J. PaulRajashekar, who has served so well in that capacity andwho decided to step down to pursue teaching and otherinterests on our campus. On another international note:This fall, for the first time, we will have a field workerassigned to Seamen’s Church Institute of Philadelphia andSouth Jersey. Second-year seminarian Kat Steinly ofSellersville will visit ships, extending Christ’s love toseafarers from around the world in 2012–13.

The story of the ministry of the Rev. David Rowe inOley, Pennsylvania, reminds us once more of how many ofour graduates are engaged in just plain solid ministry despitemany challenges. Thanks to those of you who are graduatesand professional ministry “friends” who minister valiantly inoften unheralded circumstances! We thank God forentrusting the development of such leaders to us, and for theproclamation they give to the faith by how they lead. Pr.Rowe’s daughter, the Rev. Becky Resch, was one of our firstscholars in the Theological Education with Youth (TEY)program. Her dad tells us that several weeks after her TEYsummer was completed, she told her family that she haddecided to pursue pastoral ministry. She went on to attendLTSP and now serves as an associate pastor at AbidingPresence Lutheran Church in Ewing Township, New Jersey.

Thanks to Irma Wright’s devotion and the devotion ofothers, the Dr. Grover C. and Irma S. Wright ScholarshipFund to benefit African American students at LTSPcontinues to grow. A story in this report highlights thatmuch of the most recent growth is due to a $13,000 giftmade to the Fund by the Rev. P. Richard Grove, ’64, andhis wife Nancy. Dick and Nancy have also contributedregular scholarship assistance to help seminarians withchildren to better afford their training. Thanks to Dick,Nancy, and so many of you who have given to support themany aspects of LTSP.

It once was the case that, with the support LTSPreceived from the national church combined with support from its partner synods, there was, frankly, littleneed for raising significant amounts of money from ourconstituents. The seminary had a modest endowment andthat, along with church support, made it possible not tocharge our students tuition and keep other costs very low. Some even claimed the seminary had “lots of money.” Thatwas then! That is not the case now!

PRESIDENTFrom the

Page 3: LTSP Annual Report 2012

Today, the seminary is facing stiff financialchallenges in these difficult economic times. We are not alone. Many leaders in ourcongregations, synods, and denominationaloffices, as well as executives for many non-profitorganizations AND in the households we visit, exchange the same lament with us. Our staffand faculty know personally about hardshipsimposed by these times, as I am sure you do too.We give deep thanks to our staff and faculty fortheir dedication in such times. Almost everyoneknows someone who has been laid off, downsized, or who remains chronicallyunemployed. Dave Rowe speaks of suchhardships in the story of his ministry in Oley.Still, through our faith we continue to know aGod of love and hope in the midst of trials.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church inAmerica and our partner synods once were in aposition to provide financial support sufficientto cover most of the seminary’s budgetaryneeds, which in turn meant that our graduatesusually left seminary with no educational debt.Today, these partners furnish the seminaryonly 15 percent of its budgetary costs. Most ofour students today enter seminary withsignificant debt incurred during theirundergraduate studies, and are willing in manyinstances to take on more. Donors like you,Dick and Nancy Grove, and Dave Rowe domuch by their gifts to help to support ourstudents, as you will read. Still, despite our bestintentions for furnishing student financial aid,we cannot do as much as we want in thesetough times. Consequently, many of ourstudents graduate with significant debt, eventhough our tuition does not rival that of somany graduate schools. In addition, ourwonderful students, who have sacrificed somuch in order to serve our Lord, simply willnot leave seminary with the earning power ofmany other graduate students entering themarketplace. The sad reality is that some oftoday’s seminary graduates may spend most ifnot all of their careers paying down their debt.

Finally, delivering the kind of qualityeducation our students deserve is just plainexpensive today. We desperately needed TheBrossman Learning Center so many of youhelped make possible. Before Brossman wehad no classroom building! Another exampleof costs: Today’s seminarians come to ourschool expecting the same kind of technologyresources they used in their classrooms incollege and often have at home. The cost ofmaintaining our technology with the rapidityof change is taxing on all educationalinstitutions. Yet many visitors may not “see”all that it takes to keep up with improvementsand keep it running smoothly.

We need your gifts to support ourseminarians and help offset the growing costsof training them effectively making use of suchtools as rapidly changing technology.

We also need you to continue to send usnew students, who we believe will continue tofind valuable leadership roles across the church. When we send them to your congregations, be good to them. They have given and willcontinue to give much. The church desperatelyneeds the kind of skilled professional leadersthat you can send us and we can prepare forthese difficult but exciting times.

Meanwhile, we will be pursuing thestrategic goals I wrote about in the last issue ofPS Magazine:

• To complete a curriculum revision intime for the 2013–14 academic year.

• To achieve financial equilibrium, working with our many partners andthrough good stewardship of ourresources.

• By 2015, to complete a $10 millionendowment initiative for studentscholarships, endowment growth, faculty development, and therenovation of perimeter housing.

• To grow the student body to 500 by 2014 by increasing admissions by 20 per year in all programs.

• To prepare for the 150th anniversaryof the seminary in 2014 by embracingthe future that God is sending.

With your prayers and with your supportwe will get there together.

Philip D.W. Krey

Page 4: LTSP Annual Report 2012

Dear friend,You are part of a remarkable story. This is the outline: somewhere in this world a pastor is serving because of you. A leader is guiding a special ministry of care

because of you. A scholar is teaching, a musician is leading a congregation in song, a volunteer is serving food to hungrypeople, because of you. There is much more that could be told.

Think of this: those actions are the result of the gifts of many people, including you. You have blessed the work of theseminary with your encouragement and support, and as a consequence, men and women have been prepared for service in thechurch and the world, to lead in the proclamation of the Gospel in word and deed.

This annual report is a way of sending our thanks to you for your support, and we hope it also gives you a sense of the goodthat is accomplished through your contributions.

As we send this report the campus has welcomed new and returning students, and we have begun the new academic year. Many of them are here only because you have helped through your generous gifts to the seminary. The impact of your gift, the“return on your investment,” is truly immeasurable.

And so we thank you on behalf of the students and the people they will serve throughout their lives of ministry, becauseyou are a part of this wonderful work of the Spirit to call and prepare leaders for the church.

Please remember the seminary with generosity in prayer and support, and thank you for being a part of this life-giving story.

In Christ,

The Rev. John V. PuotinenVice President for Philanthropy

Grover and Irma WrightScholarship Fund EnjoysGrowth and a SignificantNew Gift

Irma S. Wright continues todevote her energies togrowing and sustaining the

scholarship fund in support ofAfrican American Lutheranstudents who seek to becomerostered professional leaders inthe church. The fund is housedat The Lutheran TheologicalSeminary at Philadelphia (LTSP).

“I love young people and tryto encourage them to want to dosomething with their life,” Irma Wright said. “This is the fruits of the things that[Grover] used to do and now I’m the one to keep it moving! Thank God I madethe right decision!” Her decision was to donate a sustaining gift of $75,000 toestablish The Dr. Grover C. and Irma S. Wright Scholarship Fund in the fall of2010. Her extraordinary gift — the single largest African American Lutheran giftto LTSP in its nearly 150 year history — was made possible by proceeds from thedissolution of the Black Lutheran Community Development Corporation(BLCDC), founded in 1987 by Dr. Grover Wright to provide affordable housingfor single-parent families and support such families to become self-sufficient. Theorganization developed several housing units in Philadelphia. Irma Wright carriedon the work of BLCDC after her husband’s death in 1997 until the organizationcould no longer be sustained.

Today, more than $100,000 has been raised for the fund, according to YvonneLembo, the first recipient of the scholarship in her third year of the Master ofDivinity degree program at LTSP and a philanthropic advisor with the LTSPOffice for Philanthropy who plays a key role in administering and attractingsupport for the fund.

Recent fund growth is thanks in part to a $13,000 gift from the Rev. P. Richardand Nancy Grove of Philadelphia, designed to provide a full scholarship for anAfrican American seminarian during the 2012-2013 academic year. Grove, a 1964LTSP graduate, served as pastor at Christ Lutheran Church, 30th and DiamondStreets, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for several years in the late 1960s. Grove wenton to become coordinator of the Northwest Philadelphia Lutheran Parish, modeledafter a similar collaborative Lutheran Church initiative in Center City. The Groves, now retired, live in Center City Philadelphia where Richard Grove serves oneafternoon a week as a docent for the National Constitution Center.

“Grover and Irma were devoted members of the Christ Church congregation,”Grove recalled. “He was a Pullman railroad porter and at the church was a Boy Scoutleader with many young men in the community involved in Scouting. I was reallyimpressed with his leadership qualities, and so I worked to recruit Grover to become a

community organizer and outreach leader for Christ Church. At the time, he wasbeginning to think that his future in railroading was limited, and so was pleased atthe church leadership opportunity. Irma was involved in many activities at thechurch, and both were a great support to me as a young pastor. So when theScholarship Fund was started, we saw it as a great way to honor the Wrights’ legacyby providing financial support to an African American student.” For several years, the Groves have also furnished scholarship aid to assist married seminarians withchildren.

Grover Wright went on from his work at 30th and Diamond to becomeassociate director for leadership development for the Lutheran Church inAmerica’s Division for Professional Leadership, which was seeking to recruittalented African Americans to become pastors in the church.

Irma Wright was constantly at his side, also serving as a teacher and mentorand providing administrative support and advice. In addition to serving aspresident of BLCDC, she worked with the Urban League, first as a volunteer andthen as an employed administrator, ordering and keeping track of supplies, andtracking income and expenses, among other responsibilities.” Today, she remainsactive as a pivotal member of Christ Church and stays close to the pulse of theScholarship Fund, regularly sending handwritten notes of appreciation to donors, including Dick and Nancy Grove!

The Grover and Irma Wright Scholarship Fund remains open for donations. The 2012-2013 fundraising goal is to match the Groves’ $13,000 gift with newgifts and pledged support for the Fund.

Seminary Alumnus David Rowe on Serving the Rural Poor and the Importance of Giving to LTSP

The Rev. David Rowe, a 1981 LTSPgraduate and pastor of Friedens LutheranChurch in Oley, Pennsylvania, doesn’t

need a lot of prodding to explain why he is adiligent donor to the seminary.

“The seminary provides the most uniqueopportunity for people to explore their faith of anyplace,” he said during an interview in his office in thesmall, rural hamlet of Oley, surrounded by farmlands. Outside, the shouts andlaughter of children gathering for Vacation Bible School provided a backdrop. “Istarted my regular giving to support the (Timothy) Lull Lounge (in The BrossmanLearning Center), and I’ve made giving to my seminary [a] part of my tithing.”

Rowe has plenty of powerful memories of his seminary education, and said histraining at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) is part ofhis daily approach to ministry. “The seminary gives its students a strongfoundation — first-rate teaching of the Bible, solid training in systematic theology, liturgy and homiletics [preaching],” Rowe said. He trots out the names of manymentoring professors — Lull, John H.P. Reumann, Foster McCurley, RichardJeske, Robert Bornemann, Lyman Lundeen, Robert Hughes, and Harold Albert.

“The seminary can’t teach the leaders it trains everything,” Rowe said. “It ishard to develop an understanding of stewardship and evangelism outside of theparish. But seminary gives you the hand tools, the foundation so you can figure outapproaches to that other stuff.” The seminary’s influence has extended beyondRowe in his family. His daughter, Becky, was an early scholar in the TheologicalEducation with Youth (TEY) program. “That TEY summer was a powerfulexperience for her,” Rowe said. “It was several weeks later that she told us she felt acall to pastoral ministry.” Becky went on to seminary and now serves as anassociate pastor at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church in Ewing Township, NewJersey. Son Andrew plays the tuba professionally, and has overcome the challengesof asthma to do so. A Penn State graduate, Andrew is the kitchen manager for acafe in State College, Pennsylvania. Pr. Rowe’s wife, Mary, has served in the area asa parochial school and child care teacher and now directs a child care program innearby Douglassville.

Rowe said he began to think about becoming a pastor during his teen years. Hegrew up as part of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Phoenixville and CentennialLutheran Church in Kimberton, both in Pennsylvania. As a youth he enjoyedleadership opportunities in Centennial Church. “I had a chance to lead worship,” herecalled. But for a while he thought he had a greater interest in chemistry and physics. When he entered Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, however, he

registered “pre-seminary” and concentrated on philosophy and religion. He was positively influenced by Ursinus’s campus ministry initiative. Laterit was on to LTSP.

Rowe said worship and education are central to faith formation atFriedens Church, where he has served as pastor for 18 years. “Weemphasize discipleship,” he said. “We expect and encourage people tolive out their faith in their daily lives.” Key staff leadership, includingfor an ambitious child care program, comes from Associate in MinistryKathy Schaeffer, who has served at Friedens Church for 10 years.

Parishioners have run a food pantry at the church for 16 years, partof a Reading area hunger outreach by many congregations. “This areacan look affluent on the outside,” he said. But in recent years he notedthere has been an “uptick” in pantry use “from 40 to 50 families to 70to 90.” Anyone earning 150 percent of the poverty level or less iseligible for pantry service, he said. The congregation actually has aloading dock to receive goods for the pantry.

Oley is a beautiful rural community with adjoining, often majesticrolling farm acreage. Jobs in Oley itself are not plentiful, Rowe said. There is a trucking company, and the Oley area, comprising the townand four townships, has its own school district. Residents commute toKing of Prussia and Reading for work, but fewer young children arebeing raised in Oley than once was the case. “We have our share of lowincome people here,” Rowe explained. Pantry “customers” includeseniors on fixed incomes, single parents, and the newly unemployed, many of whom Rowe has come to know well. “Some of these peoplehave never been unemployed before now,” he said. On the morning ofthis interview, Rowe had a problem with part of the congregation’s airconditioning system. He telephoned a parishioner who might look. The man has been unemployed, but Rowe learned he has found worksome distance from the church and can’t come over. “Don’t worryabout the church,” Rowe said on the phone. “I’m just grateful you havefound work.”

Since Hurricane Andrew devastated Florida in 1992, Friedens hashad an active group of 15 or so folks who use vacation time to engage indisaster response recovery work. Friedens members are frequentlyjoined by folks from other local churches.

“Our crews go once or twice a year,” Rowe said. Crew visits are allover the map — North Dakota; Biloxi, Mississippi; the city of Athensand elsewhere in Pennsylvania; Florida; and Ohio.

Friedens members also offer leadership to Camp Noah, an initiativeorganized by Lutheran Social Services (LSS) of Minnesota to supportchildren in the wake of disasters that have impacted their communities.Rowe explained LSS has provided his parishioners with key trainingand made arrangements for Friedens members to stay in several placeswhere they have been needed to support the initiative. “The campbuilds its program around the story of Noah and the Flood,” he said.

“They have wonderful teaching and mental health programs. They helpchildren understand they were not responsible for disasters. Many ofthe children and their families have suffered huge losses. They knowpeople who died and who have moved away.” Rowe explained thatCamp Noah is a blessing for volunteers who want to make a differencebut who don’t happen to have carpentry or rebuilding skills. Athens, atown in northern Pennsylvania just south of Binghamton, New York, has received volunteer help from Friedens in the aftermath of floodslate last summer. “About 20 percent of the town’s people have movedaway,” Rowe explained. “They are having a tough time.” Such sites ofdevastation often quickly drop from the headlines after a naturaldisaster, Rowe noted, “and people can forget about them.” Friedens isamong the congregations trying not to forget.

Rowe encourages churches and leaders in the current climate “to dowhat they can” in the face of painful current events on many levels.“The Sermon on the Mount goads us,” he said. “For so many todaytheir work is their identity. We try to help those who are strugglingknow their identity is formed by God through Holy Baptism. Our giftis not in what we do but rather in who we are and what God has done.We try to walk with them, give them pastoral care, and tell them wereally care about them in this harsh, harsh time. Our hope is not inwhat we accomplish but rather in God. The role of each of us in ourassembly at Friedens is to be God’s brother and sister in Christ topeople who are having a hard time.”

Rowe said he knows some seminarians come to LTSP withouthaving had a lot of church experience. “They can learn that atseminary,” he said. On the other hand, with a mom who was a churchsecretary and a mother-in-law who was a church organist for manyyears, “I was probably overchurched,” he said with a smile.

For those discerning a possible professional church leadershipcareer, Rowe urges them “to taste and try a lot of stuff — church, reading, movies, jobs that have nothing to do with church — take whatcomes with a sense of adventure.” He urges prayer and conversationsabout faith in daily life. “Many people today are using different stylesand approaches in what they are doing,” he said, mentioning theInternet, and email devotions. In preparation for daily prayers, Rowe said he reads the newspaper to get a sense of the issues in hiscommunity and around the world. In that practice, he is following theadvice of a theologian he read in seminary, Karl Barth, pastoring andpreaching with a Bible in one hand and newspaper in the other.

“A challenge for those of us who experience absolution from God in our worship is how to share this — what God has done for us,”Rowe said. He described the poor he has met in the past year, the newlyunemployed, “and people who have lost their homes in a flood and nowhave nothing. There are so many faces of despair, and as a total churchwe need to do a better job relating to them.”

CREATING anENDURING

LEGACYLIFE INCOME and BEQUEST GIFTS

“I’m interested in increasing my income andhelping prepare pastors to serve our church.”

“My education at LTSP was really important tome! I’ve always wanted to give something back inthanks for that education, but I need the incomefrom the investments I have made.”

The LTSP Office for Philanthropy staffregularly hear these comments, andthey help to open a conversation which

can result in increased income for you, whilealso helping to support the school that helpedprepare you or your pastor for ministry.

The following is an actual example of such an opportunity:A retired pastor and his spouse had faithfully given modest gifts to the seminary

during his active ministry. In a recent conversation, he recalled his years at theseminary and how important the foundation he received at Philadelphia was to himas he served the Lord and his church. His wife had also reflected upon the importantrole that seminaries play for everyone who is interested in the future of the church.

The couple was introduced to an easy method of accomplishing their goals. ACharitable Gift Annuity is a simple exchange of an asset (such as cash, stock, or evenreal estate) for regular income for the remainder of both of their lives. In this case, hewas 77 and she was 79. Based on their ages, they could receive a 6.0 percent rate ofreturn! This was significantly more than they were getting from their CD, so theydecided to make their gift, and by doing so their income actually increased! They alsoreceived some attractive income tax advantages and were pleased that ultimately theseminary would receive what was left.

The pastor and his wife were delighted because they increased their incomewhile helping their seminary.Would you like to know how such a gift might help you achieve your goals? For information or questions about Charitable Gift Annuities or other planned givingopportunities, please contact Larry House at 1.800.286.4616, Ext. 6315 [email protected].

hour to walk from his parked car outsideTerminal 4 to his office near The Christ for theWorld Chapel on the terminal’s fourth floor.

Recently, as he left the parking lot he foundit necessary to “step out” in front of a pull truckbearing a “Smarte Carte” label. The man hadbeen driving recklessly and had nearly struck apassenger crossing the street to enter theterminal. Dabee wasn’t about to ignore the episode as just another New Yorkmanic moment. His clerical garb quickly caught the attention of the driver, whoabruptly stopped. “I just gave him a little word. Slow down.” Vintage Dabee.Polished, reserved, calm but insistent. His low voice diffuses rather than escalatesthe episode. He makes his point and then moves on.

Just one episode in the fast-paced, confused, turmoil-laden atmosphere that isJFK International Airport in Jamaica, New York, regarded as “America’s Gatewayto the World.” Seven terminals and more than 70 airlines (many you probablynever heard of ), 10 square miles of territory, 42 million passengers each year, everyone on the move and wearing the varied, colorful garbs of a hundredhomelands, chatting in 50 dialects. Thirty thousand or so employees from variedbackgrounds staffing airline desks, ground transportation, cleaning crews, andcooking enterprises, and performing myriad other tasks visible and less visible toscurrying travelers. JFK is a whirling, jet-propelled cosmopolis, a United Nationson wings and wheels.

“Everyone here is on a journey,” Dabee explained. “When you want to be partof a ministry that serves the globe, this airport is the place to be a testament to thefounders of the Chapel, a place to let Christ be known around the world bywitnessing in one space.” The week before, Dabee was a helpful host to orphansarriving from the Ukraine to spend the summer with prospective adoptive families.Today, his Jewish Rabbi colleague is welcoming to the airport school childrenbound for a summer educational adventure to Tel Aviv. “The airport is a uniqueanimal, more of a community than a congregation,” Dabee said. “You serve

travelers, strangers you may never see again, and the community of staffwho work in the airport whom you get to know over time.”

But wait, back to Dabee’s “commute” from the parking lot. Afterpausing to enlighten the Smart Carte guy, he encounters a lone travelingwoman steering her luggage down a hallway. She asks him for directions. When Dabee spots a traveler who appears to be struggling for bearings,he approaches cheerfully and asks “Where are we going today. Do youneed some help?” Many are grateful for his interest. Occasionally he isrebuffed. “You can’t let that bother you because right around the cornerwill be someone else you can assist,” Dabee said matter-of-factly.“Hospitality is a crucial aspect of ministry here. I work to assure thatpeople are somehow not blocked off from ways that are helpful, in a waythat travelers can hear a sane or still voice, that they see a smile thatbrings them a sense of comfort and peace in a stressful environment.”

Next stop, Mr. Kim’s dry-cleaning service on the first floor toexchange greetings with the proprietor. Dabee then says hello to thecurrency exchange employees at their station nearby. A little time witha baggage handler he has come to know. Then he spies a neighbor, AjayDhawan, a native of India who is the Station Manager (director of JFKoperations) for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. (Dhawan is also presidentof the Terminal 4 Airline Consortium, which helps airlines relate to theterminal’s management and TSA security management.) A quick visitto Dhawan’s colorful office, set off by model airplanes and a wall ofphotos of celebrities Dhawan has met.

Finally, Dabee arrives at the faith-based oasis that is at the east endof Terminal 4’s fourth floor. Hosts for anyone visiting the oasis includeRoman Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim chaplains who oversee theirrespective ministries, but who find ways to connect as well —examples: A Martin Luther King Day observance, a 9/11 remembranceevent, and recent disaster response preparation training featuringregional police, fire, and emergency management officials, the NewYork Port Authority, the National Transportation Safety Board, FBI,and the Red Cross. The event included training at the Jet BlueTerminal next door. “As chaplains we have been learning about our rolein connection with first responders,” Dabee said. While aninternational airport in New York City might seem like a terroristtarget, Dabee calmly explained how safe he feels JFK is, with all of itssecurity. With a smile he noted that air travel is the second safest modeof transit one can take “next to an elevator.” Still, he said, “we areworking on being better prepared.”

Dabee, a 2005 MDiv graduate of The Lutheran TheologicalSeminary at Philadelphia (LTSP), spent six years as a Lutheran parishpastor at Our Saviour, Jamaica, and Gloria Dei in New Hyde Park, NewYork, before his Conference Dean within the Metropolitan New YorkSynod of the ELCA handed him information about the need for aProtestant Chaplain at JFK, working under the auspices of the Councilof Churches of New York. At first Dabee tabled the idea, “but then itbegan tugging at me” and he pursued and won the post, beginning last

December. “During my STM (Master of Sacred Theology) studies atLTSP I took a course taught by Prof. David Grafton called “Childrenof Abraham,” which focused on Judaism, Christian, and Muslimtraditions. I did not see then that I was being led to a ministry like thisin a place like this where I would be working so closely with an Imamand a Rabbi.” There is also a Roman Catholic priest who serves as achaplain along the “oasis.” Another course that has strengthened hiscurrent approach to ministry was called “Sin, Evil, and the Travail ofChristian Theology” as taught by former Prof. Stephen Ray.

Dabee’s chaplaincy seems to know few bounds as he walks thefloors of the many terminals, introducing himself, greeting strangersand meeting unanticipated needs.

One week after he became chaplain, Dabee was contacted by aDelta Airlines worker who wondered if he would assist in honoring thememory of an inflight supervisor at JFK who had succumbed to achronic illness. “He was obviously a beloved figure to so many,” Dabeesaid. “The funeral, back home with family in Ohio, was not somethingmany staff here were in a position to attend. So we responded to theirrequest for a memorial service and held a service that includedpreaching, prayer, hymns, psalms, and a eulogy to bring closure to themfor the life of their valued colleague and friend.”

A few weeks later, an employee for the New York Port Authority atthe Lincoln Tunnel rang him up. Would Dabee conduct the wedding forhim and his fiancée? Both had demanding schedules and no home church.“He is a Baptist from the Carolinas and his future wife is an Anglican fromthe Barbados,” Dabee explained. “They told me our Christ for the WorldChapel would be the perfect setting for us to involve our families andworking colleagues in the wedding. It was a big celebration.”

In the Jet Blue Terminal one day, Dabee was chatting withmanagers for the airline when a passenger approached him. “Are you achaplain?” the traveler asked. Dabee told him yes. “I’m traveling to visitmy father who is ill in California. Could you pray for him? His name isRobert.” Dabee assured the man he would pray for his Dad and hisfamily. “Go with God,” he said to the man.

On another occasion, a bewildered woman inbound from aninternational flight and traveling with two young children was trying tofigure out where in the airport she could possibly connect with herscheduled flight to Dallas, Texas. Dabee discovered how to route herand gave her instructions to her plane a couple of terminals away.

He’s befriended an airport employee looking for a second job tohelp with family expenses, in part because her position at the airportdoes not include benefits. “She’s needed a driver’s license to qualify forthe job and has had trouble passing the test,” he said. “She’s neededsomeone to encourage her and not get too discouraged,” he explained.“Sometimes your ministry here has a spiritual focus, and then there is aneed just to be a presence, to provide comfort and reassurance to thewhole person.”

Each Wednesday about noon an announcement goes over thesound system at the airport inviting travelers and staff who choose totake a break to a brief worship service.

“It lasts only about 12 to 15 minutes,” he explained. “There is anopening prayer, Scripture reading, meditation hymn, prayers for thepeople, the Lord’s Prayer, a blessing for those attending and a sendinghymn.” His “congregation” includes passengers between flights andstaff, like baggage handlers, looking for a place of solace, respite, andcomfort in the midst of their hectic schedules. On one occasion ayoung man from India who now resides in Ohio engaged Dabee. Hissister’s husband died unexpectedly and he was going home for thefuneral. The man explained the service was just what he needed to facehis long trip home.

The chapel at the airport is available for all Christian groups to use.It receives funds from benevolent donors and aviation businesses thatappreciate it, and donations are always welcome, Dabee said.

“Funerals are a big reason why people travel through the airport,” hesaid. On another occasion a family from Guyana, his homeland, wastraveling for a funeral there. “In a sea of faces you can kind of pick outtravelers from the place you are from,” he said. When he greeted them

they quickly revealed the reason for their travels. “Right there at thegate I was able to do a blessing right before they got on their flight,” herecalled. Dabee came to the U.S. from Guyana in 2000 to enterseminary. One year ago he became a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Now, Dabee is working on plans for songfests during the Christmasholidays to greet passengers in JFK’s Arrival Hall. He’s also devisingfocus groups and plans for 30-minute Bible studies to better serve officestaff and other airport workers.

Dabee, 36, is married to Rozelle Fredrick-Dabee, who teachesEnglish as a Second Language in the New York City elementary schoolsystem. The couple lives in Queens Village, about a 10-minutecommute from the airport.

“What is at the heart of this ministry is to be a presence, to bearChrist to others in a busy, confusing environment, to bring solace andrest even for a moment, to give believers a chance to hear Christpreached, to offer them a word of promise and hope, just when theyneed it,” Dabee said. “For me it is a blessing, an honor to bring Christ tothem that way, to be a part of their journey.”

The CRITICALNEED for

STUDENT FINANCIAL

ASSISTANCEAccording to the ELCA Vocation and Education unit, seminarystudent indebtedness today averages over $31,000. The LutheranTheological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) is committed tosending students into ministry with the lowest indebtednesspossible. However, this is an increasing challenge.

Funds for financial aid and scholarship support are a keyneed for securing the future of LTSP students, the seminary, andthe church. Your outright gifts, as well as planned gifts designatedto enhance the endowment, will help to assure that financial aidwill be there for today’s and tomorrow’s students. For more information about creating an endowed scholarship fund, please contact John Puotinen, 1.800.286.4616, ext. 6316 [email protected].

Did you know that Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has a new charitablegiving program? They are no longer matching gifts of any kind. Rather, eligible members are designated Choice Dollars through the ThriventChoice program based on their relationship with Thrivent Financial. If youhave Choice Dollars, we invite you to direct them to The LutheranTheological Seminary at Philadelphia.

Here are step-by-step instructions on how to designate your funds:1. Log on to www.thrivent.com.2. Sign in with your username and password or register for an account. 3. Once you have registered and signed in, select the “Thrivent Choice”

button, then scroll down and select the “Get Started” button. If you are eligible for Choice Dollars, the amount of dollars you have to direct is displayed in the Thrivent Choice portal below your login.

4. In the middle of the next page, type in “Lutheran Theological Seminary,” in the “Organization Name” box and click search.

5. Next to the seminary’s name, you will see a “Direct Now” button. You will be able to direct all or part of your choice dollars to the seminary. You can also set it up so LTSP continues to get your futureThrivent Choice Dollars.

6. Click the “Submit” button and your Thrivent Choice Dollars will be sent to LTSP.

...or you can call 800.847.4836 to designate your allocated dollars.

Thank you for your support of the seminary!

If you have any questions, please contact Kathie Afflerbach, Director ofDonor Services, at 215.248.6324 or email [email protected].
