64 R.L. SMITH LOGGING - ELMA, WASH.

by brandon hansenFor Loggers World

Based in elma, wash. R.l.smith logging runs seventrucks to keep hauls flowing offthe jobsites in grays, lewis andThurston Counties in south-western washington. whileowners Roger and Carmensmith didn’t set out to rule thehighways and backroads whenthey began their logging compa-ny in 1991, the necessity of hav-ing their own trucks and greatdrivers has paid off.

“not in my wildest dreams didi imagine i would have logtrucks,” Roger said. “i was al-ways on the log side of thingsand every company was different

in how they approached logtrucks. You’d hear guys saythey’d never own log trucks buti’m glad i got into them.”

Roger’s background in loggingis family-based. Both his grand-fathers, brothers and unclesworked out in the woods. whenhe graduated from high school in1980, he had thought about get-ting into carpentry but that in-dustry was in a downturn andlogging was the hot market.

“Back then they were offering14 dollars an hour and that’s alot back in 1980,” Roger said.

Thirty-five years later, the ca-reer choice proved to be a wiseone as Roger and his wife Car-men own three shovel sides anda yoder along with his fleet ofseven trucks. operating out ofelma, the company employs over29 people and Roger is able towork alongside his two brothersguy and gary smith. Roger is

also a Board member on thewashington Contract loggersassociation Credit union, theolympic logging Conference andpacific logging CongressBoards.

R.l. smith is in that nice nichewhere they’re big enough towork for large timber companiesor get things done for smalllandowner. They do, however, need someone to move those logsand that’s where the truckingfleet comes in.

much like how Roger smithwas a logger by trade that endedup owning log trucks, his firstdriver was a hook tender thatturned into the company’s mostconsistent driver.

“Bruce is one of the originalemployees,” Carmen said. “Rogerand him have known each othersince they were little kids.”

Roger has known Bruce Baker

“We have as good as drivers as anyone. We try to provide themwith a good wage. Truck drivers are professionals, you just can’tput an average joe in a truck like that. They’ve got to take care of

them. Drivers are almost married to their truck.”

PULLING UP TO THE JOBSITE is Randy Russell in his 2000 KenworthT800. While R.L. Smith does have a five-acre base of operations in Elmawhere they can keep their trucks rolling, the drivers mainly do the day-to-day upkeep on the trucks. For any repairs or pesky engine lights, thedrivers will take their trucks to Kenworth Northwest in Aberdeen orWestern Peterbilt in Cosmopolis. “They take such good care of thetrucks,” Carmen Smith said.

“You’d hear guys say they’d never own log trucks but I’m glad I got into them.”

since second grade. The two grewup in the Tumwater area andboth have a family backgroundin the timber industry. after re-tiring from the state, Baker’s fa-ther moved into driving logtruck. when Baker was 21 he gothis Cdl and drove some logtruck.

at a young age, Baker went toalaska, brushing off the logtruck driving and moving to therigging crew. he spent a three-year stint up in alaska, then go-ing for two more years up north.Baker did a little bit of every-thing: tended hook, ran a front-end loader and operated a shov-el. in the early 80s up in alaska, the logging business was boom-ing and loggers were command-

ing top dollar. “There were logging camps up

there everywhere,” Baker said. Baker worked for R.h. Valen-

tine, working for him up in alas-ka and down in washington.

“he was one of those guys thatyou shook his hand and that washis word,” Baker said.

Baker made the most of thelogging camps’ bunk house food -saying he ate like a king whileworking up in alaska. he alsogained years of logging experi-ence and came back to washing-ton and became one of R.l.smith’s original employees.

“i’ve known Bruce since sec-ond grade and he’s one of thebest hook tenders out there,”Roger said. “we knew he wantedto drive truck and it began fromthere.”

in 1992, the logging companydipped its toe in the truckingbusiness, buying a 1992 ken-worth for Baker to drive. withhis experience driving truck be-fore, Bruce got out of the brushand into the drivers’ seat. hehasn’t left since.

“he was the start of it and hereally set the example,” Rogersaid.

eXPanSion of TRuCKSThe company upgraded Bruce’struck in 1997, and in 2003 gothim his preferred truck of choice- a peterbilt. Currently, Bakerdrives a 2015 peterbilt 389 witha three-axle whit-log trailer puttogether by Capitol industrial.

“nine years ago you couldn’tfind any trucks and it was get-ting harder and hard to moveour own wood,” Roger smithsaid.

in 2007, they purchased a2006 peterbilt owned by Carlindiehm when he passed away andwith it came his son, Bruce“Beep” phillips, who is now theTruck Boss. This made the thirdtruck in the fleet.

in 2011, when the marketstarted to pick up after the reces-sion, log trucks were becomingharder and harder to find to getlogs shipped to the mills, R.l.smith expanded their log truckfleet with two trucks, both 2000kenworths. in 2012 they bought

a kenworth mule Train.as it always seems to go for

log trucks, a few trucks turnedinto a fleet of seven. Currentlythe company has a mix of peter-bilts and kenworths includingfive long-loggers and two muletrains. The entire fleet spends 99percent of the time moving logsfor the R.l. smith logging side.

The company has also recentlybought two more peterbilts, cur-rently sitting and gettingprepped in Cosmopolis, wash.Roger says whenever looking in-to expanding the number oftrucks, he always has a driver inmind to put behind the wheel. They also use several indepen-dent contractors in grays har-bor.

STaYing on The RoadRl smith has a five-acre shopand base of operations in elma, wash. allowing them to servegrays harbor County while ship-ping to olympia and aberdeen-area mills.

“we’re going to probably do afew more in-house things main-tenance-wise,” Roger said. “ourdrivers take good care of ourtrucks. They’ll do the greasingand change the oil. we’ll alsotake them to the dealerships forrepairs.”

R.l. smith trucks will haulprimarily to either aberdeen orolympia, with Beep doing allthe dispatching. They continueto make the company’s productmove despite the ever-squeezingregulations. Roger credits thesuccess of his company squarelyon his employees.

driving a 2012 kenworthmule Train is Rick Johnson, andin a 2013 kenworth long loggerfor R.l. smith is mark larson.larry stove also drives a 2014kenworth mule train.

“we have as good as driversas anyone,” Roger said. “we tryto provide them with a goodwage. Truck drivers are profes-sionals, you just can’t put an av-erage joe in a truck like that. They’ve got to take care of them.drivers are almost married totheir truck.”

The two drivers getting thenew 2017 peterbilts currentlysitting in Cosmopolis are RandyRussell and Bobby gibby. Rus-sell and gibby both currentlydrive 2000 kenworth long log-gers.

logging trucks really don’tstart making a lot of money un-til they’re paid off, Carmenadded, saying that drivers mak-ing sure trucks aren’t thrashedby the end of their useful life cy-

cle is a huge deal.“They take such good care of

the trucks,” Carmen said.a big stumbling point is the

fuel surcharge for trucks nothaving changed in decades, de-spite the growing costs fordrivers and owners.

everybody has their own for-mula for surcharges, but it hasbecome a severe concern for logtruck drivers.

“That old state rate is whatpeople go by and you just can’tbeat up a truck driver like that,”Roger said. “They need to bepaid more.”

surcharges are different de-pending by area, and Roger saidthat it can end with the drivergetting the short end of thestick. in an industry with a

shortage of drivers and trucks,it’s an important area you don’twant to cut corners on.

“in order for drivers to makemore money you have to add athird axle and that’s really theonly way you can do it with astate rate plus surcharge pricesfrom the 1990s,” Carmen said.

That being said, Roger andCarmen feel they can keeptrucks going out on the roads ofgrays harbor County andsouthwestern washington foryears to come.

with a quality group ofdrivers, there’s little slowingthem down after beginning thefleet in 1992 with just one truck.

BLAST FROM THE PASTBY QUINN J. MURK FOR LOGGERS WORLD

In this photo, a small crewhas put up some fairly nicecar loads of mixed specielogs, mostly spruce.

The cars shown are twologging flat cars and one is ona set of disconnected bunks. It looks like the crew assem-bled about mid-day when thelight was at its best. The hint:no shadows.

The dark line in the upper left corner of the photois from the glass plate gettingbroken in the photographer’sequipment during the printingprocess. I’d date this old pho-to somewhere between theturn of the century and pre-World War 1.

BLASTFROM THEPASTBY QUINN J. MURK FORLOGGERS WORLD

Those old single axle trucks ofdays gone by sure used to pack aheck of a load. Sometimes whenan especially nice load was loadedlike this one, and a camera wasaround, the whole darn loadingcrew wanted to get into the act, like this bunch. A western Wash-ington truck logger got such a loadon his General Motors truck, and itsure looks like the loading crewclimbed on in this 1945 photo.

Unfortunately, the identity ofthose in the picture has been lostin the pages of time.
