L anguage Intelligence (LI) is Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Human Language. LI applications make it possible to produce, communicate and understand
any digital speech and text content on any media for everyone. This machine capability can therefore encode and radically expand the power of natural spoken and written language in every area of life.LI operates at the intersection of three key concepts: conversation, language-neutrality, and multimodality. This means that it supports and enhances talking and listening to and with both people and machines, as well as searching for, producing, and understanding information of any kind in different media between all human languages, using machine translation.
LI has the power to deliver automated solutions that make repetitive or very large-scale content processes more or less invisible. As a result, busy people can focus more energy on strategy, decision-making and negotiations, and allow LI to take over much of the time-consuming work of writing, discovering, summarizing, scan-reading, editing, transcribing, and translating linguistic content.This represents a tremendous leap forward because we can now outsource knowledge-based tasks to our machines. Why has MT become so big?
Globalisation, international trade, social media and web content define the reasons for the constantly increasing use of machine transla-tion. Multilingualism is becoming ever more important for communicating with others over a wide variety of channels in an interconnected world.
The amount of short-lived content for which linguistic appeal is not a priority is growing ex-ponentially. Social media texts, internal work notices, low-key content – here, the producer has to weigh up whether translation by a hu-man being will actually add value or whether the cheaper option of MT is the better choice.
Human vs. machine translation
Given the options available these days, com-panies have to analyse precisely whether they prefer human translation, MT or machine trans-lation with post-editing (MTPE). As before,
Are we ready for machine translation?
Let’s be honest – our industry is far from ful-ly utilising the possibilities of digitisation. I’m often asked: when will we be able to translate texts automatically? My answer to this is now! Machine translation (MT) has long been a rea-lity. It is on the point of turning us and our wor-king world upside down.
Contrary to widespread opinion therefore, MT is no longer a thing of the future. In fact, this method of translation has become established so quickly and inconspicuously that its intro-duction on the market has gone unnoticed by many. Hence the technology has long been in use and its further development is progressing rapidly. Every day an average of more than one billion words are translated with various MT tools – many times the volume translated by human beings. Google Translate alone pro-cesses 200–300 billion machine-translated words per day, as does Amazon or Alibaba. It’s therefore no wonder that the global market va-lue of MT amounted to 0.25 billion US dollars even back in 2012. Experts now believe that by

high-quality texts remain unsuitable for use of MT or MTPE, so for these the human transla-tor is the best choice. Challenges such as words with multiple meanings or context-specific translations of language are still too much for algorithms to deal with. For other texts, the end result of automated translation is entirely suffi-cient, which means more content and multiple languages for less time and money.
Eventually, we will reach a point where artificial intelligence (AI) will match the human level, and it will then be possible to utilise it for quality assurance purposes in translation too. Human parity may be merely a vision right now, but in the future it will undoubtedly become a reality. A common misconception of AI right now is that algorithms function using historical data, but this is simply incorrect: with AI, a self-lear-ning component always plays a role too, and this continually adapts the technology to the circumstances and ensures its automatic fur-ther development. An example of this is natural language processing (NLP), a technology that is producing ever better results and carrying out translation in a way that is no longer static, but rather makes use of intelligent neural machine translation (NMT).
Making up ground
The translation industry is still all too hesitant to use MT and MTPE. Nevertheless, the tech-nologies are slowly but surely changing the way translation is handled. Their use is only appro-priate, however, when they permit seamless workflows and function as fully automated standard software. The technology reveals its advantages when the functions of machine translation are avai-lable to employees in the applications they use on a daily basis, such as Word, CMS systems and graphic programmes. So what’s the bottom line?
Human parity is still a thing of the future, but artificial intelligence is progressing rapidly. Ne-vertheless, for high-quality translations, there will still be a need for human translation for a long time to come, whilst for low-key content or non-official documents use of machine transla-tion makes sense.
We aim to continue pursuing this path of transformation and to embrace all reasonable changes with flexibility. The future of the trans-lation industry remains unclear, but one thing’s for sure: we will be there to closely observe and help shape its development.
