The 16 participantsrode a stationary bicycleto exhaustion under twoconditions: once whenthey were mentallyfatigued and once whenthey were mentallyrested.

Traditional Myanmar medicine has maderemarkable progress due to its interrelationwith the soil, climate pattern, culture andtraditions of the nation. Traditional Myanmarmedicine has won trust and reliance of thepeople since time immemorial.

So, the government is applying all possibleways to encourage traditional Myanmarmedicine for its improvement. As part of thegoal, it is rendering assistance effectively tomanufacture traditional medicines ofinternational standard through research andadvanced compounding methods.

The Traditional Medicine Departmentunder the Ministry of Health organized the firsttraditional medicine research paper readingsession and astronomical medicine seminar atthe University of Traditional Medicine inMandalay on 21 and 22 February. Resourcepersons read out 16 papers on traditionalmedicine research and 10 papers on astronomicalmedicine. Members of the Traditional MedicineCouncil, the Traditional Myanmar MedicineAssociation, and traditional medicineresearchers assessed the papers.

Traditional medicine practitioners of theyounger generation have to do research ontraditional medicine with the use of advancedmethods in order to maintain and improve thetraditional medicine, therapies and medicinesthat have been relayed from one generation tothe next.

In compounding traditional medicines,medicinal agents and herbal plants are usedboth in combination and individually to providepublic health care on a wider scale. Traditionalmedicine practitioners and producers have tocarry out research in a scientific way forensuring safety and greater effectiveness inproducing potent traditional medicines.

Now, the government is keeping itsconsiderable attention to improvement oftraditional medicine and boosting the potencyof traditional medicines. In response, traditionalmedicine practitioners should focus onproduction of potent traditional medicines ona larger scale to be able to give better healthcare to the people.

NASA aims for 12 March launchof Discovery

RIO DE JANEIRO, 26 Feb — Brazilian police Wednes-day seized 500 kg of marijuana from a car in themidwestern state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

The drugs were found stashed in the back seat andthe trunk of a car when it was detained at a traffic stopon the outskirts of Caarapo, 268 km from the state’scapital city of Campo Grande.The two people in thecar managed to flee, frontier police said.

BEIJING, 26 Feb — Cutting calories and stickingwith it is the best way to lose weight regardless ofwhether a diet emphasizes fat, protein, or carbohy-drates, according to a new study published on Wednes-day.

As the world grapples with rising obesity, millionshave turned to popular diets like Atkins, Zone andOrnish that tout the benefits of one nutrient over an-other.

The debate has been going on for two decades onwhich diet is best for weight loss.

However, a US study shows that would-be dietersshould choose the weight-loss programme that theyare most comfortable with, as long as it is high in fiberand low in calories and saturated fat.

“All the diets were winners,” said study co-authorDr Frank Sacks, a professor of cardiovascular diseaseprevention at the Harvard School of Public Health.

“The key really is that it’s calories. It’s not the con-tent of fat or carbohydrates, it’s just calories,” saidSacks.

NAY PYI TAW, 26 February—The Government ofthe Union of Myanmar and the International LabourOffice (ILO) today extended the SupplementaryUnderstanding on the treatment of complaintsregarding forced labour for a further twelve months.

This Supplementary Understanding supports theapplication of existing laws prohibiting the use offorced labour in Myanmar. It provides a complaints’mechanism, facilitated by the ILO Liaison Officer inYangon. Under Article 1 of the SupplementaryUnderstanding Myanmar citizens can, with protectionfrom reprisal, seek justice under the law if they aresubjected to forced labour.

In welcoming the signing of the extension, theMinister of Labour, His Excellency U Aung Kyi

Supplementary Understanding for the eliminationof forced labour in Myanmar extended

stated that he “welcomed this continuation of thecooperation between the Government and the ILOwhich once again confirms the Government ofMyanmar’s high level commitment to its policy forthe prohibition of forced labour”. The Minister statedfurther that “the Supplementary Understandingsupports the Government’s political commitment tothe eradication of forced labour. The rights of citizensare fully guaranteed under the title ‘Citizen:Fundamental Rights and Duties of the Citizens’ inChapter (viii), and the provision on the prohibition offorced labour in Section 359 of the Constitution ofthe Republic of the Union of Myanmar which wasratified by the referendum held in May 2008”.

SOMALIA, 26 Feb—A Chinese naval vessel rescuedan Italian merchant ship from approaching pirates inthe Gulf of Aden off Somalia on Thursday.

Destroyer “Haikou” of the Chinese navy receiveda SOS from the Liberia-flagged Italian ship around10:03 a.m. reporting two unidentified yachts wereapproaching just about 3 to 4 nautical miles away.

A ship borne helicopter with three combatants andone photographer on board was immediately sent tothe scene. “When our helicopter reached the area, thetwo yachts were already close to the merchant ship.They were equipped with two engines and weretraveling with high speed,” said Captain Chen Yi.

Hovering around the Italian ship “LIA,” the Chinesehelicopter fired two flares as a warning to scare theyachts away. Two minutes later, the Italian merchantship sent a message to thank the Chinese naval ship.

BEIJING, 26 Feb—Several brands of multivitaminsfor pregnant women contain too little iodine than theirlabels claim, posing greater threat to the braindevelopment of a child, says a study.

According to the study, tests conducted on 60brands that listed iodine as an ingredient on their labelsfound many fell short of the stated amount.

Project Superintend-ing Engineer U Saw WinMaung of the Power Sup-ply Project (South) saidthat Kamanut-Thakayta230 KV Grid Project wasto distribute the powerfrom the electric powerplants being undertakenby the Ministry of Elec-tric Power (1) in thenorthern part ofMyanmar to Yangon;that along the route be-tween Kamanut andThanlyin were 308 py-lons that an order wasplaced on companies forconstruction of the tow-ers, and the engineers ofthe Power Supply Project(South) were installingpower lines; and that in-stallation of power linesin the Bago River wasbeing carried out jointlyby the Power SupplyProject (South) of theMyanma Electric PowerEnterprise under the Min-istry of Electric Power(2), Public Works, andthe Marine Administra-tion Department.
