3 LANGUAGE A postcardDear Grandma,We arrived here in Wales yesterday evening. I didn’t want to go because I thought camping was boring. But now I’m happy that I came here. The campsite is great. This morning we all slept till 10 o’clock and then we had a big breakfast. In the afternoon I played football with some other boys for two hours. We didn’t go swimming because it was too cold. We hope for warmer weather for tomorrow.

See you next week.

1 LISTENING A new friend 01 Part one:

Rob: Hello.Mick: Hi, Rob, this is Mick speaking. I wanted to check

if you’re back from your holiday.Rob: Hi, Mick. Yes, we came back last Wednesday.

We had a great holiday!Mick: Come on, tell me more. I was at home most of

the time, so it wasn’t very exciting. And the weather here in England was bad too. You went to Italy, didn’t you?

Rob: Well, no we were in the southwest of France. The weather was sunny and hot. We stayed in our caravan by the sea. It was perfect really. Mum, Dad and I had a great time. The only thing that I didn’t like was that there were no English kids around. You know, nobody to play football with or just to talk to. There were lots of French and some German families. But I felt bored.

Mick: Oh dear, that sounds terrible – only you and your parents. So what did you do all day?

Rob: Well, of course I was at the beach every day and I went swimming in the sea. I often watched a German boy surfing. He was really good at surfing. You know that I like surfing. That’s why I watched him so often. We didn’t talk much because I can’t speak a word of German and his English wasn’t very good. Anyway, one day he came over to me with his surfboard and asked “Do you want to try surfing? It’s easy.”

Mick: Sounds exciting. What did you say?Rob: Listen, Mick, Mum’s calling me, so I have to stop.

Can you ring me again in about an hour, OK? And then I’ll tell you more, OK?

Mick: That’s fine with me. Bye, Rob.

Rob: Hello. Mick: It’s me again, Rob. Rob: Oh, hi, Mick. As I said, it was quite boring at the

beginning. But then this German boy came over to me and asked me if I wanted to try surfing.

Mick: And – did you try?Rob: Well, because I was so bored I said yes. And the

next moment I was on his board – not in the sea, but on the beach, and he showed me what I had to do in the water. It wasn’t very difficult.

Mick: Rob, that’s great, isn’t it? Did you go into the water too?

Rob: Of course I did. And it went fine. Noah, that’s the name of the German boy, was a really good teach-er and I think I was a good student. I really started to surf a little. And you know what, Noah under-stood more and more English and so we talked in English a lot. He was very happy about his English and I was happy about the surfing lessons.

Mick: It sounds amazing.Rob: I was very sorry when Noah had to leave, but of

course we can stay in touch by email, you know like good friends. And – we hope that we can meet again next year at the same place. I want to surf just like Noah and he needs some more English lessons. I’m already looking forward to next year’s holidays.

Mick: It’s perfect really, Rob. And you have a German friend now. That’s great too.

Rob: I’m happy that Noah came to me and asked me about surfing. I’m also happy that I learned to surf. And I learned that my friends don’t have to be English. One or two sentences or questions can be the start of a great friendship. Listen, Mick, why don’t you come over to my house tomorrow? Then I can show you some photos and we can talk about your holidays too.

Mick: Good idea. Let’s meet at 3 pm tomorrow. Bye, Rob.Rob: Bye, Mick. See you tomorrow.

4 WORDS Oliver talks about his holidaysWell, my holidays were great. My mum got in touch with a music teacher from Birmingham. And he invited me to a music camp in Scotland. You know that I play the guitar, so I liked the idea. I was there for 10 days. We stayed at a boys’ boarding school with an outdoor swimming pool. My room was in a very old building. I was lucky because I

shared the room with a boy from Manchester. He always told jokes, so I never felt bored. The weather was good too – eight out of ten days were sunny. I liked the music camp very much and every evening I looked forward to the next day.

5 SPEAKING Talking about the holidays 03 Mögliche Lösung:

Hi,I’d like to talk about my holiday this summer. I went to Italy for a week with my mum, my dad and my sister Marie. We stayed at a nice hotel. The weather was warm and sunny, so we went to the beach every day. We had a great time there. We went swimmingand played beach volleyball with other children. I liked it a lot. On our last day we went to Rome. My mother and my sister liked it, but for me it was too hot. And I don’t like to look at old houses. But Dad bought us big ice creams and in the evening we went to a restaurant for a pizza. I really liked my holidays.

Klassenarbeit A

1 LISTENING Talking about the clubs 04 Part one:

Samuel: Well, Leah, what do you think about the school clubs this year?

Leah: I’d like to join lots of clubs this year. I think clubs are the best thing about school. That’s why I want to join at least two clubs. What about you, Samuel?

Samuel: I like clubs too. Last year I was in the Tennis Club, I enjoyed it and I’m quite good at tennis now. I think I’ll stay there because this year I’m old enough to play in the school team. I’m looking forward to playing against other schools. So which clubs do you want to join, Leah?

Leah: Well, let’s look at this list here. I really fancy the Guitar Club. You see, my dad gave me his guitar and now I’d like to learn to play it. Look, the Guitar Club is on Tuesday afternoon. So, that’s the right club for me. Now a sports club.

Hm, not football, I can play football in the park whenever I want to.

Samuel: Why don’t you join the Tennis Club too? It’s fun, it’s on Monday and it’s good for your health.

Leah: Hm, I want to play something in a team, maybe basketball. Yes, let’s have a look … Oh no, that’s on Tuesday too. So – no basketball for me.

Samuel: What about swimming? Jessica says it’s really good. She was in the Swimming Club last year. Look, that’s on Wednesday.

Leah: Yes, I quite like swimming, but it’s not a team sport, so let me see – hey, look here, Mr Adams is running an Ice-hockey Club on Thursday – and students who want to know more about it meet on Tuesday this week. I think I’m going to this meeting. Maybe ice-hockey is the right sport for me.

05 Part two:

Rebecca: Hi, Jack, what do you think about this year’s school clubs? Do you know what? My cousin in Manchester told me that they’re having a “Breakfast Club” at his school.

Jack: A what, Rebecca?Rebecca: A “Breakfast Club”. It means that if you join

the club, you go there in the morning, you know, before the lessons start, and you have breakfast together at school.

Jack: Sounds awful to me. I like breakfast at home, don’t you?

Rebecca: Hm, yes, I do too, but I think it’s good for younger students if their parents work. This way they get a good and healthy breakfast.

Jack: OK, but now let’s talk about our clubs. I’d like to join the Climbing Club with Mr Jones this year. He’s a nice teacher. And the club is on Monday. That’s good for me. What about you?

Rebecca: I was in the Music Club last year, but I didn’t like it very much. We only listened to music and didn’t do anything. This year I’d like to be more active. That’s why I’m going to join the Dance Club. It’s both, music and sport. I don’t know the teacher because she’s new. I hope she’s nice and the club isn’t boring.

06 Part three:

Amy: Mum says I should go to the Science Club because I’m not very good at science. She says I can learn to be better there. But I don’t like science and that’s why I don’t want to go there. I want to stay in the German Club. This year we’re going to cook German food and bake German cakes. And we’re going to have a German day in March. No, I’m not going to join the Science Club. What are you going to do, Ben?

Benjamin: Hm, last year I was in the Geography Club. That was quite interesting, you know. But this year I want to do something different. The Art Club sounds exciting. I like drawing, so I think that’s the right club for me. It’s with Mrs Albers. Do you know her? Is she nice?

Amy: Hm, I know she teaches science – and I think she teaches maths too, but I don’t really know her. Oh wait a minute, I can ask Paul if you like – I think his sister did maths with Mrs Albers last year.

Benjamin: Could you do that for me, please? Thank you, Amy.

2 WORDS About the Drama ClubThe Drama Club is great. After some weeks we always go and see a play at the theatre in Plymouth. That's always very nice. In the Drama Club we start with easy things: first we write funny dialogues and then we read them aloud. That’s good fun and helps us to speak. We also read short stories in front of the group. Then we discuss which play we want to put on stage. It’s always a long

discussion, but in the end we agree. Then we practise a lot. There are lots of students in our group. Some are really good and very talented, and some are in the Drama Club because they like acting. We are all nervous before our play starts and nobody wants to make a mistake. But we love it when the people clap after our play. Why don’t you join us too? We meet every Tuesday at 2 pm.

3 LANGUAGE Which is the best club?1 I’m going to join the Football Club because it’s easier.2 I’m going to join the Film Club because it’s scarier.3 I’m going to join the Guitar Club because it’s more

interesting.

4 I’m going to join the Climbing Club because it’s more exciting.

5 I’m going to join the Writing Club because (I think) it’s better.

4 LANGUAGE At the Games Cluba)

b)1 “Zoo for everybody” is the most boring game.2 Well, I really like “Animals around the world”. I think it's the best game.3 Oh come on, “Where is Rick?” is the most exciting game of all.4 And this card game here is the fastest to play.

c) Mögliche Lösung:1 For me “Shopping in Main Street” is the worst game.2 “The New Detective” is more interesting and more exciting than “Bulango”.

6 SPEAKING Talking about your favourite books 07 Lösungsvorschlag:

I live together with my father, so I really like “Sue’s life in a caravan”. I know that life together with your dad is sometimes great, but can be really hard too. Sue lives in a caravan because they don’t have much money. This makes it even more difficult. But I hope that I can find out why they are happy. “Sue’s life in a caravan” is my favourite book.

The second book is “A giraffe at the birthday party”. I really like fantasy stories and I like watching animals in the zoo. I think that this book is good because it tells us a lot about giraffes, it’s a fantasy story and it’s funny. Maybe I can learn more about giraffes. That would be good too. So this is my second favourite.

The title “Adam moves to Germany“ sounds really interesting. I was in Germany last year and I liked it very much. But I don’t really want to live there. So I want to find out how life is going for Adam. And I want to find out more about Germany.

I love adventure stories. So “Alice alone in London” is the perfect story for me. Alice gets lost in London – I’d like to know more about her dangerous adventures in London. I like London too. I want to go there when I’m older, so I think I can find out many things about London. And I hope I don’t get lost in London when I go there.

I think “Animals around the world” is funnier than “Zoo for everybody”.

John

Isabel

Paul

I think the “Harbour Game” is easier than “Animals around the world”.

“Where is Rick?” is as exciting as the “Harbour Game”.

“Our Hotel” is as cool as “A school party”.

6 WRITING About my school in Germany Lösungsvorschlag:

Hi,

I’m writing to you from Germany. Here in Germany the school year starts in August or September. There are two terms in a school year. In Germany we don’t wear school uniforms, everybody can wear what he or she likes. That’s great, I think. My school starts early in the morning at 7.35 am and there are six lessons and two breaks in a school morning. We don’t have a canteen at our school because lots of students go home after the six lessons. We don’t have many clubs at our school. I’m in the Drama Club, that’s the best and most important club at our school.

shopping this afternoon. I need some things for school and – what is more important – I want to look for a birthday present for my mum. What are you doing? Would you like to come with me?

Emma: Hi Charlotte. Well, I’m just on my way to the post office at the moment. I have to post some letters for my grandma. They are letters to different countries, so I have to go in and ask for the price. But it won’t take all afternoon, you know. We can go shopping

after that. There’s a shopping centre which is only about three minutes away from the post office. We could go there together. Why don’t we meet at the post office?

Charlotte: Good idea. Which post office is it, Emma?Emma: Which post office? The one in Derry’s Cross.

That’s a roundabout at the end of Exeter Street. Do you know it?

Charlotte: No, I’m sorry, I don’t. I hope I can find it. But I can always ask for the way. So let’s meet in about half an hour, OK?

Emma: Great, Charlotte. I can wait for you in front of the post office. See you.

Charlotte: Yes, OK.Man: When you get to the roundabout, turn left

and take the first street on the left – that’s Union Street. Then you have to walk straight

on again. You have to cross three streets – be careful when you cross the third street, that’s Western Approach. That’s a very busy street … you know … lots of cars and they always drive too quickly. Walk straight on Union Street until you get to Derry’s Cross. That’s another roundabout. Turn right, walk round the roundabout and then take the second street on your right.

7 WRITING How you find our house Mögliche Lösung:

Hi Emilia,I’m so sorry that I can’t meet you at the station. But you will find our house easily. It’s only a ten-minute walk from the station. When you go out of the station, you have to turn left into Arnikastraße, go straight on until you get to a roundabout. Then turn right and walk round, take the second street and turn right again. Go past the theatre. Cross Schillerstraße. Then go past the cinema and turn left into Kirchstraße. Go past the church, turn right into Alte Poststraße and you can see our house on the left. It’s No 27, opposite the kindergarten.Have a good trip. I’m looking forward to your visit.Love xxx

On Dartmoor

Klassenarbeit A

1 LISTENING Talking about a school trip to Dartmoor 11

Narrator: Mrs Adams, a teacherMrs Adams: Well, we had an exciting week on Dartmoor.

All our students had a good time and thanks to the amazing weather we were able to do lots of outdoor activities. We left school on Monday morning. We travelled by bus, and because it didn’t take long to get to Dartmoor we were able to go for a walk on the moors in the afternoon. The students learned to read maps and to follow the right path. This is very important when you are out on the moor. What other activities did we do? Oh yes, one day we went climbing and swimming. The students really liked climbing. At the beginning some of them were scared. Well, it was new for them. But we had a really good trainer, who helped the students a lot. So in the end everybody climbed up the rocks. On the last day we went mountain biking. The students had maps again and they had to find their way without any adults! All of them did it – nobody had any big problems. So I think that the students really learned a lot. They got to know the countryside, of course, and they learned to use maps, but I think it was also a very good trip because the students had to cook their own meals and clean the kitchen afterwards. They are important activities, too! So yes, I think it was good for everybody.

Narrator: Mrs Davies, a motherMrs Davies: The students learned that you can’t always

just sit at the table and wait for your meal

to come! I think this is the most important thing that they’ve learned: how to cook and how to clean the kitchen afterwards. My son didn’t like some of the food, but I think that’s a good thing too. When he was hungry, he had to eat it, even if it wasn’t his favourite food. And that’s good. Do you know what I mean? In the end he enjoyed the school trip to Dartmoor. They did some fantastic things, and I want to say thank you to the two teachers.

Narrator: Tim, a studentTim: Yes, I think nearly all of us enjoyed the

week on Dartmoor. We got to know the Dartmoor countryside really well, and we did interesting activities like mountain bik-ing and climbing. I really liked that. But I didn’t like the walk round the moor very much. We had to use maps to find our way. I’m not very good at reading maps, so it was hard for me. It wasn’t much fun. But we did have a lot of fun at night: all the boys – there were 14 of us – slept in one room, and the 11 girls slept in another room. We had brought lots of cool things with us, you know, games, music and some food like crisps and chocolate. They’re all good things for parties! I heard that the girls had parties too, but I don’t know much about it. Anyway, our parties were so much fun. And I think that’s what makes a school trip great – having parties – not all the learning stuff!

a)

1 Tim talks a lot about things the students did at night.

2 Mrs Davies talks a lot about food.

3 Mrs Adams talks a lot about things the students did during the day.

This photo shows the Dartmoor countryside. In the foreground there are four Dartmoor ponies. One of them is lying in the grass and the other three ponies are standing behind it. You can see a tor on the right. There is another pony in the background on the left of the photo. It’s standing. You can see very far because the weather is very good.

I think the field where the ponies are is higher than the rest of the area. In the background there is the moor. You can’t see any trees, but there is a long road and one house or farm. The road runs from the right to the middle of the photo. There is a second road which you can’t see so well, in the background on the left. You can see hills behind the moor.

5 WRITING A story Mögliche Lösung:

An adventure on the moorThree young students went walking on Dartmoor. They started on Friday morning. The weather was great. They had enough food for two days and a tent with them. They walked for three hours before they stopped for their first break near a tor. “The countryside is fantastic here,” said Alan. After about an hour they started walking again. Suddenly the weather changed. There were lots of dark clouds. They just had time to put up the tent before it started to rain a lot. The rain didn’t stop and it was very cold, so they had to wait in the tent until the next morning. It was a very scary night and the three students couldn’t sleep because the wind was so loud. “It sounds like a ghost!” said David. “Don’t be silly”, said Sarah. But they were all scared. After a short breakfast they walked on. The weather was sunny again and they started to like their walk on the moor again. In the evening when they got home they were tired but happy about their adventure.

The “drivers” must work on the tubs to make sure that their tub goes down the river perfectly. And they decorate the

Klassenarbeit B

1 LISTENING Southland School is 40! 13 Part A:

Radio presenter: Hi, and welcome to Southland School’s 40 years’ birthday. It’s a beautiful morning and I’m standing here in the assembly hall, where the principal, Mr Baxter, has just welcomed today’s guests. And now he’s standing next to me. Good morning, Mr Baxter. Congratulations on 40 years of Southland School. How do you feel today?Mr Baxter: Hello and good morning. Well, that’s a good question. Today I’m really happy, everything is fine. We’ve all worked hard to prepare this celebration. All the teachers and students worked together to make it a good day for our school and our guests. We’re glad that the weather is good, so our activities can be outside and inside the school building.Radio presenter: Can you tell our listeners a bit more about today’s activities?Mr Baxter: Well, at 10 o’clock this morning we started with a big breakfast in our schoolyard. We put up lots of tables and chairs and people brought their own food for breakfast, so that we all had breakfast together. The

atmosphere was great and it was a wonderful start to the day! There will be an activity every hour today, so – for example – at 12 o’clock you can watch our school drama group. They are going to act out some funny classroom scenes. I’m sure people will have fun. That’s downstairs in the art room. We have an international canteen – year 8 students have cooked and baked different things, so the guests can try their food. The canteen will be open all day, so whenever you’re hungry, drop in and have a snack. AND … you will like the prices too: no snack costs more than £ 2!! Then there’s a Memory Club for the the – hm – I call them “older” students, you know, people over 40. They can sit together with their old friends in a classroom, just like they did 40 years ago, chat and get a photo of it. That’s between 2 and 4 pm in three different classrooms. You’ll find the classroom numbers in the programme. May I give you this programme? You can see all our activities with the correct times. Don’t miss the drama group. I’m sorry, I have to go and welcome more guests now. See you later …

14 Part B:

Radio presenter: So, here we are again – at Southland School’s 40-year anniversary. In the meantime lots of people have arrived, and Mr Baxter has told me that there are guests from all over the world. Let’s see if I can talk to some of them. … Excuse me, my name is Emma Ashton. I’m here for the “News of the South”. May I ask you some questions, Sir?Jim: Yes, sure. I’m Jim, by the way.Radio presenter: Right. Now Jim, were you a student at Southland?Jim: Yes, I was.Radio presenter: And where do you live now?Jim: Well, at the moment I live in Sydney, Australia.Radio presenter: Wow, so you’ve come a very long way. Why did you decide to come such along way, Jim?Jim: Well, I went to this school 40 years ago. Actually, I was one of the first students at this school. I always enjoyed school and I have good memories, you know, the boys and girls in my class were nice and most of the teachers too. I mean, there were teachers that I didn’t like much, but I guess it’s like that at every school.Radio presenter: How did you find out about today’s celebration?Jim: Oh, well I joined the club “Friends of Southland School” before I moved to Australia, you see. That way I get information about everything that’s going on here at

Southland. It’s great – they send a newsletter four times a year. I’m 52 now but I still feel like I’m part of the school. It keeps you young, you know. And today I hope to meet lots of my old friends – and of course some of my old teachers.Radio presenter: Well, good luck and thank you for the interview, Jim.Jim: You’re welcome.Radio presenter: Oh, that was interesting. Now, let’s see if I can talk so someone who’s a student here at the moment. … Excuse me, my name is Emma Ashton. I’m here for the “News of the South”. May I ask you some questions?Ann: Yes, of course. My name is Ann.Radio presenter: Ann, are you a student at Southland at the moment?Ann: Yes, I am.Radio presenter: Do you have time to enjoy the celebration or do you have lots of jobs to do today?Ann: Well, actually, I’ve quite a lot of jobs to do but I hope I can enjoy the day too. My friend and I are going to show groups round the school three times today, at 11.30 am, at 1.30 pm and at 3.30 pm. I’m looking forward to it because I will have contact with our guests. At 2 pm I’m in the science show. Our class has worked out this show together with our science teacher. You must come

Radio presenter: We’re going to report more later today, so keep on listening to Radio “News from the South”. But why don’t you simply join the celebration – we’re going to interview more guests this afternoon. Maybe you will be one of them. Now it’s time for some music.

But on the way to Mumbai there was a terrible storm, so we had to land in Bangkok. The storm was so heavy that it destroyed part of the airport. We couldn’t fly again till the next morning, so a taxi picked us up and took us to the hotel. The hotel was very expensive – but we didn’t have to pay for it. 5 WRITING A school celebration Mögliche Lösung:

Everybody in my class likes parties with their friends. I’d like to tell you something about the party that we had last week. I’m in class 7 AP and our class teacher, Mrs Pinter, had the idea of a party. In our lesson we collected lots of ideas and in the end we agreed on a party together with our parents. The party started at 5 pm. Every family brought something to eat. We put the food on a big table

and then we started eating together. It was good to see how everybody liked the food. At half past six we started with our programme. We showed our parents different things from our lesson: we had made our own poems, we sang a song and acted out a short scene in German. The parents liked our programme and at about 8 pm everybody went home.

6 SPEAKING A special day in your family 15 Mögliche Lösung:

I’d like to talk about birthdays in my family. We all think that someone's birthday is an important day in the year. That’s why we celebrate it. So, I’m going to tell you something about my birthday. In the morning my mum wakes me up with a cup of hot chocolate. That’s one of my favourite drinks. Then I go into the bathroom and when I come into the kitchen, there are already candles on the table and a big cake. My dad, my mum and my sister say “Happy birthday” to me. I blow out the candles and we have breakfast together. Then I go to school. I always take some sweets with me for my friends. And my best friends at school give me small presents. When I come home in the afternoon, my grandma and my aunt have already arrived. Together with my mum and my sister they usually sing “Happy birthday” and then they give their presents to me. After that we have tea, hot chocolate and a birthday cake. Later, when my dad comes home, we have dinner. Of course we always have my favourite food: schnitzel with chips and salad and chocolate ice cream for dessert. It’s always a great day.
