This verse came into my head as I was thinking about

what to write for the magazine this month.

Luke 10:27 - He answered “love the lord your God with

all your heart, all your soul, all your strength and all your

mind: and love your neighbour as yourself”

As I am sitting here with the sun shining through the office

window, I think of the beauty of God’s creation. I have

served in many parts of the world with differing climates

but always enjoyed and looked forward to returning home

to Britain.

Living in the lovely rural areas of Worcestershire made me think of farming and food

production, of times I spent when I was younger working alongside my uncle on his

farm, also watching the pickers working hard in the fields around, but then these

thoughts brought me back to food.

One of the distractions working from home is the kitchen: it’s so easy to go and get

food, so I have decided I need to go on a diet.

Have you ever tried to lose weight? I’m sure most of us have tried and are still trying.

We try all different kinds of diets and plans to go on but in the end it’s all down to how

disciplined we are.

We will lose a few pounds and put them on again, then lose them again. Maybe for

something special we will stick to the plan.

Loving God is the essence of being a Christian and like our diets we need someone to

help us. Loving God with all we have is often difficult, we need that spiritual renewal,

that boost, and I don’t mean the chocolate version.

When we invite Jesus to journey with us, we grow in confidence and self-worth, we

gain that inner strength to battle everything life throws at us, even that diet.

The order Jesus gives us of loving God and our neighbour is important. Our

spirituality, the heart stuff, will show itself in how we treat others and how we look after

ourselves.

Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.

Affiliated to Refugee Action and part of Worcestershire Welcomes Refugees

Evesham Vale Welcomes Refugees is a group of people who have been preparing to welcome refugee families to Evesham or nearby after the Government agreed to accept a small number in the UK. We have been raising awareness of the reality of the refugee situation by holding collections and raising funds for ‘People in Motion’ a small Worcestershire based charity which sends warm clothes and bedding to refugees trapped in holding camps in Calais and Greece. We have just heard that we will be receiving 2 families of 6 people in June, to be homed locally. Suitable accommodation has been found. The distribution of these families in the UK comes under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation scheme (SVPR) and the local Council will provide accommodation, education and welfare support. We are looking for people who first of all are friendly and can empathise with these people who have been through horrific trauma for several years, having fled their country, giving up their homes, jobs and ways of life to face resettlement in a totally new country with a new language, culture, climate and political system. Their children face being placed in a school where they don’t speak the language. Our role will be to provide a friendly welcome and help to settle into their new life and hopefully once recovered to get work and integrate into our society. We need volunteers from the surrounding area who can help: Offer friendship support and encouragement • Fundraise • Befriend Translate (probably Arabic) • Source furniture and equipment for their new homes Provide either funds for or actual initial clothing needs • Create a website Work on social media platforms • Crowdfund • Help with budgeting Newsletter editor • Help with admin • Help with house maintenance/minor repairs Apply for grants • Help at fundraisers (always plenty of hands needed) Help with transport • Help with any outings we arrange Come and chat at the Conversation Cafes • Bake a cake etc for events Help with training • Share knowledge of local services Teach English as a second language ESOL • Help keep up with political and legal updates Show them round Evesham • Lend or give suitable books As you can see there are plenty of things to do so please consider offering skilled or unskilled help even if you only have a small amount of time. News From Beckford

Summertime in Beckford As forecast in last month’s magazine, tickets for Beckford’s Summer Event for 2019 are now on sale. To be sure of your place on Saturday 20th July don’t delay in securing your own!

This year’s garden party will be held in the lovely walled garden of The Stabling at the top of Court Farm Lane, the home of Jane and Mark McCauley and we shall be entertained by the music of the talented Bellini Strings quartet, noted for their repertoire of light classical music and music from the shows, from 7pm.

Your first glass of Pimms – or a soft drink – will be included in the ticket price, along with canapés to be served throughout the evening. The bar will serve wine and assorted drinks throughout. Tickets can be obtained from David Carvill (882002), Graham Galer (882200) or from Beckford Stores (881248) and cost £15. Do not delay: there has to be a limit to the number of tickets issued! Due to the lack of parking space, patrons are asked to park at the village hall, although of course it’s possible for those experiencing difficulty in walking to be dropped off at The Stabling. This garden party event, which takes place in alternate years, has become a well-loved feature of Beckford’s summer scene so do come and join us for a delightful, social evening in a beautiful setting! Pentecost Service in Beckford Also familiarly known as Whitsun, the festival falls this year on Sunday 9th June. In Beckford it will be marked by a service of Evensong at 6pm when we shall be delighted to welcome the Venerable Robert Jones, Archdeacon of Worcester, who will lead the service for us. It’s been a long while since we’ve been fortunate enough to have a visit from Robert, who is a gifted preacher, and we very much look forward to seeing him here once again. Refreshments will be served after the service, providing an opportunity to meet Robert and to talk with him. It’s a happy coincidence that our regular Dutch visitors, Jacob, Bernard and Ineke will also be with us that evening during their annual visit to Beckford. Come and join us for what is expected to be an enriching evening.

Beckford Coffee Morning Our monthly Coffee Morning will take place in the chancel, as usual, on Friday 28th June from 10.30am to 12 noon. This pleasant social gathering has steadily increased in popularity and affords an opportunity for people from the villages to come together – often with passing strangers – to enjoy conversation and reminiscences, over

coffee or tea and a splendid selection of home-made cakes. All for the modest cost of £2.50.

BECKFORD W.I. - May Report Our Vice-President, Sam Wing welcomed 22 members and 2 visitors to the Village Hall on Monday 13th May. Since the last meeting members of Beckford WI had attended the Spring Group Meeting hosted by Twyning WI. After the business part of that meeting, Duncan Coombs gave an illustrated talk about a visit to Japan to see the gardens there. He showed pictures of the traditional raked gravel gardens and the cherry blossom and also the cloud topiary which is such a feature of some of the gardens. The monthly walk had been to the bluebell wood on Bredon Hill and we had been fortunate in having lovely weather. In Beckford several of our members took part in a First Aid course and received their certificates on completion. We then voted on the two resolutions which were to be debated at the Annual Meeting in Bournemouth. One was about promoting the cervical smear test and the other was concerned with the decline in local bus services. There was a discussion about methods of raising money to assist in the refurbishment of Beckford Village Hall and the plan is for a Gala Dinner with an auction of promises and other items. Sam then introduced our speaker for the evening, Viv Ebbage, who was to speak about her experience surviving the Costa Concordia disaster in 2012. She and her husband had joined the cruise ship in Barcelona and after a couple of days Viv was concerned that there had been no boat drill which is a normal practice, as the ship had over 4000 people on board. By Day 5 they had reached Italy and were visiting Rome. Having dressed up for dinner that evening they were ready to start their meal when they felt a great bang and the floor started to tilt. They were told that it was an electrical fault as the main lighting had gone out but that it was being attended to. They were told to go up to the lounge where they met people wearing life vests but Viv and her husband didn’t have theirs as they were in their cabins about 6 floors away from the lounge. Very soon they heard the order over the tannoy to “Abandon ship”. They headed for Deck B and fortunately saw an open cupboard which was packed with life vests. They helped others to take them and put their own on. The most frightening aspect of the whole event was less the idea that the ship was damaged than that they were given no directions as to what to do. Since the ship had tilted onto its side the lifeboats could not be launched from the upper side. They went to the other side to find that all the lifeboats had gone. Fortunately two rescue boats returned and they were finally instructed to get into these. By this time Viv had become separated from her husband but he could see her and they met up again when they had gained the safety of the nearest harbour where they landed. The kindness of strangers, such as being given a blanket by a holidaymaker or the assistance by hotel staff who decided to open up spare rooms and allow the survivors to get washed and be given food and clothing, made a dreadful experience bearable. The British Embassy in Rome contacted their relatives and ensured that they could travel back to the UK without passports. Once home they spoke of their experiences to the press and this helped to process the nightmare that had been their holiday cruise. The publicity had unexpected side effects. People whom they had lost touch with from college days contacted them and lots of people wanted Viv to talk about the disaster. Sam thanked Viv for her riveting account of her experience and we all marvelled at her calmness in the face of such an unnerving event.

Refreshments were then taken. The next meeting is on Monday 10th June at 7.30pm when the speaker will be Ian Caskey and the talk is entitled “ The SS Great Britain”. Visitors are most welcome. Clare Henderson, Meeting Secretary

Beckford Community Village Hall Ltd

A regrettable episode of vandalism occurred at the hall over the Early May Bank Holiday weekend, when a group of children got paint from the Toddlers' cupboard and spread it liberally over the Committee Room. We shall have to have the room

redecorated and the carpet and most of the chairs cleaned or replaced. The culprits were from a family who were among the organised group of campers and caravanners using the fields that weekend: the police were informed and insurers notified. The group's organisers were extremely apologetic, since their members are normally very respectful of our facilities. Indeed we welcome them here, not least because the rent they pay helps to maintain the financial viability of the hall. We are continuing to negotiate the handover of the former Social Club premises to BCVH ltd. We want to find a use which will generate a commercial-level rent, and several ideas have been put forward. More will be welcome! We are hoping to secure a grant under the Village Hall Improvement Grant Fund, a new £3m fund to improve village halls, managed by ACRE (Action with Communities for Rural England) on behalf of Defra. This scheme will fund up to 20% of eligible costs, with a minimum grant of £10,000 and a maximum grant of £75,000 payable. Applying for this is complex, time-consuming and time-critical, and we have had helpful advice from Jem Teal, Wychavon Community Development Manager, who came to the hall to spend a morning with our planning group. We are putting together a plan for the next stage of refurbishment of the hall, which will form the basis of our grant application. The dead wood and overhanging branches of the large oak tree next to the hall need removing, and two cherry trees nearby need trimming. We have obtained estimates for this work, which should be carried out very soon. Graham Galer, Secretary BCVH Ltd

ASHTON UNDER HILL W.I. - May Report

The May meeting was attended by 28 members. The evening meeting opened with the regular business meeting. Forthcoming events from Worcs. Federation include a lunch at the Chateau Impney with Jules Hudson in October, which sounds very good. The charity walk for ACCW along the River Severn in Worcester was supported by 150 walkers, and in the fine weather we followed a route along the west bank, over the new footbridge by the weir and back via Diglis Lock to the Cathedral. Birthday posies had been prepared for Chris Powell and Andrea Garland. The bonnets, baby blankets and angel pockets knitted by members of the Craft group were put on display and will be given to Sophie for the Special Babycare unit. The list for Open Gardens - cake making and helpers for both days - was on the table: our contribution is always appreciated by visitors and villagers alike. Our new area WI adviser, Sally Grainger, was welcomed to the Annual Meeting which followed. Sally is a member of Naunton Beauchamp WI and a former police officer. Sally thanked the members for turning out in good numbers to the meeting. She encouraged us to link up to the new WI website which is much improved and mentioned the WFWI courses on offer. Annual reports were presented by the Treasurer and Secretary and Marjy Facer as retiring president thanked everyone for their help throughout the year. Sally conducted the formal elections and the ballot for president. The committee was re-elected and Henrietta Cook joined as a new

committee member. Doreen Parsons was elected President. The members thanked Marjy for her term of office and the time she has put into the post. We are very pleased that she has agreed to continue on the committee. The new programme will be available at the next meeting. The evening concluded with a fascinating talk on the ‘History of the River Isborne’ by Mike Lovatt. This short river flows north from Cleeve Hill and has an almost industrial past in the twenty two miles it covers before reaching Evesham. Nowadays it flows

through a beautiful area including Sudeley Castle, Hailes Abbey, Dumbleton and Hinton, but 100 years ago it featured water-mills which powered a tannery, a silk mill and a paper mill in the town of Winchcombe amongst others. Farmsteads often had a mill to grind corn to make their own bread but many of these no longer exist. The flour mill at Stanway is the only functioning one left. There was a lot of rural poverty even up to the 1950s when life was based mainly in the local town or village, hard to imagine in the modern world. Mike has created a most interesting photographic record of this local history, and an important one in preserving the memory of a way of life which has almost disappeared. There were many questions and a lot of interest from members. The evening concluded with refreshments and the raffle. The next meeting is 4th June at 7:30 pm at the Village hall. Teddington and Alstone - Tewkesbury Foodbank News It is a sad fact that demand for the services of Tewkesbury Foodbank has grown in the past year with just over 1500 adults and children helped, an increase of 400 on 2017-18. For the last two years the main reasons for clients attending Tewkesbury Foodbank have been low income and benefit delays. You may like to know that each family who is helped is offered a choice of 6 other items to top up their allocation. These things could be small treats such as biscuits or chocolate, cleaning products or anything else that is given and doesn’t “fit” the regular bags of supplies. Try to imagine how this must feel, to be able to choose something to eat or use. Special diets are accommodated and sensitivity to whether people have a can opener is all part of the care that the volunteers provide. The Foodbank is anticipating a very busy summer, but already they are desperately short of the following items: COFFEE, SPONGE PUDDINGS, PASTA SAUCES, TINNED MEATS (Corned beef, ham)

If you are able to donate any of the above, please leave items in Alstone and Teddington Churches. There is a list in each church of urgently needed items which we’ll regularly update. NEWS FROM OVERBURY

By the time the magazine is printed, the finishing touches should have been made to our new WC and refreshment area. We are delighted with the outcome and cannot praise highly enough all those involved in its creation especially singling out Tim Jeffree of TDJ Joinery who, with our architect, Toby Falconer, has masterminded the whole project. We are already looking ahead to our next big venture – this time to rewire the church and to upgrade the lighting. The Diocesan Advisory Board

have approved the project in principle, we now have our Public Notices up in the church until the end of May and the full Faculty Application will then be sent to the Registry for approval by the Chancellor in, we hope, the not too distant future. Another happy event to have taken place in May has been the baptism of Sofia Elise Farrimond, whose parents, Peter and Siobhan (now living in Wiltshire), were married at St Faith’s and whose two brothers were baptised there in 2014. We are always delighted to maintain these family links. In the meantime, our June Family Service is going to be held midweek at St Faith’s on Wednesday 12th June at 2:00pm. This is a new initiative whereby we in the Parish will combine with Overbury First School to hold two joint services each term, one to be held in the church and the other in school We very much hope that other local residents (with or without small children) will also attend. On Sunday 23rd June at 11:30am, a service of thanksgiving will be held to celebrate the life of Dagny Holland-Martin. This will be followed by a light lunch at Berkeley House opposite the church to which all those attending are warmly invited. It was Dagny’s wish that this should NOT be a solemn event so everyone is encouraged to wear bright clothes! If you would like to come, please could you either telephone the Estate Office 01386 725111 or email pa@overburyenterprises.co.uk to inform catering numbers and to ensure there is enough seating in church. It has been requested that small children do not attend the service though they will be welcome at the gathering afterwards.

Although no date has yet been announced, we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our new vicar, the Reverend Allison Davies, who has been appointed to the parish of Eckington with Defford-cum-Besford, with

additional responsibility for Overbury. It is thought (and hoped) that she may start her ministry with us in July and her induction/licensing service will take place in Eckington. Anthony Hallett, who met her at interview, says “Allison has many attributes and the enthusiasm to make a real impact on our lives. We wish her a happy landing and a warm welcome”. And so say all of us! We are sad to announce the death of Reverend Julian Dawes, who was vicar at Overbury in those far off days when each church had its own, from 1965 to 1970. Formerly in the Royal Air Force, Julian (whose parents lived at Silver Rill for some time) and his Danish wife, Dot, together with their two daughters Lone and Kate, lived in the vicarage and were all much loved members of the community. Dot died many years ago and Julian married again, to Judy who survives him. He had been unwell for some time and was bedridden for the last seven months but happily his family all came to visit the day before he died peacefully at his home in Devon at the grand age of 91.

2019 Season Our President, Lord Jones, hosted the Reception for Vice-Presidents and Life Members at the pavilion on Sunday 12th May. It was a great success.

The League season has started at last, and the 2nd team have won both their matches. The 1st team are still looking for a win, but it’s early days! We still need Senior players to join us for both League and friendly matches. Net practice is held every Tuesday evening from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. Our three Youth teams in the under 11 and under 13 age groups have already won matches and are looking really good, thanks to some excellent coaching. Junior coaching/practice nights on Friday evenings (from 6:30pm) are very well supported, but new boys and girls are still most welcome to join us.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY : SIX-A-SIDE CONTEST - Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th June - 6:00pm start. Local teams compete against each other in an exciting knockout contest over two evenings.

ANNUAL FUN NIGHT - Friday 19th July at 6:30 pm - Fun for all the family ! New social members are always welcome on payment of a donation. Walks start at 7 pm and we allow 2 hours to walk about 4 miles. There is a small charge of 50p per walk which is shared between the Mzamomhle CATCH project and Beckford Nature Reserve. Sorry, no dogs.

3rd June: Meg - Starting from Lower Lode car park GL20 7DP. Approaching from Tewkesbury on the A38, turn right immediately after the long stay car park. Drive for about three quarters of a mile to the River Severn and the car park. Four mile circular walk to Deerhurst and back. Flat with some stiles. 10th June: Rita, Sue and Sharon - Meet at Stanton village car park. Three and a half miles. A flat walk through Stanton, Laverton and Buckland. 17th June: Ray - Start from Bredon village hall car park. A flat walk across the nature reserve to Kinsham, returning along the track parallel to the railway line. 24th June: Mike and Jenny - Please park tidily in the Shutters Inn car park in Gotherington. We go north to Oxenton, then over Crane hill to Woolstone and back to Gotherington. About four miles with 500ft of climbing. Mostly pasture with a few stiles. The Shutters opens on Mondays, so we can sample their wares after the walk.
