AftermovingtoColumbusfromVirginiatohelpherbrotherrecoverfromacaraccident,Simonefacedtroublesthatsheneverwouldhaveimagined.Onceherbrotherrecovered,Simonetookontheresponsibilityofraisingherthreegrandchildrenaftertheirmotherwasunabletocareforthemanymore.Shesearchedforajobthatwouldsupportthefamilyoffour,butonlyfoundpart-timeworkatalocaldepartmentstore.Thispart-timejobwasnotenoughandsheappliedforfoodstampstohelpshoulderthecostoffood. Soonafterapplying,theOhioDepartmentofJobandFamilyServices(ODJFS)contactedSimonetoletherknowthatshewouldbeapprovedforfoodstampsafterherjobverifiedherincome.AftertellingheremployersheneededthemtofaxaformtoODJFS,shewaitedforweeksandstillhadnotbeenapproved.SimonehadbeenregularlyattendingtheLSSChampionAvenueFoodPantrytohelpsupplementherfoodbudgetandkeepfoodonthetable,soshedecidedtoaskanemployeeatLSS’OhioBenefitBankforhelp. TheemployeecontactedSimone’semployeranddiscussedtheformneedingcompleted.Heremployerdidnotfullycooperateandkeptgivingdifferentexcusesandcitingtechnicalities.AfterfivedifferentphoneconversationswiththeLSSOhioBenefitBankstaffmember,heremployercompletedtheformandfaxedittoODJFS.Simonewasimmediatelyapprovedforfoodstamps,which

ThereviewsareinandLSS’newandimprovedversionoftheannualmeetingwasasuccess!Attendeesenjoyedashortprogramcelebratingourjointpartnershipofserviceandare-ceptioncompletewithtastysnackscateredbyKensingtonPlace.Duringtheprogram,weliftedourvoicesinpraisethroughthesingingofhymns;however,thehighlightofthenightwasthemasschoirmadeupofcongregationmembersfrommanydifferentchurches.Thechoir,whichsang“WhenISurveytheWondrousCross,”wasledbyDr.LyndaHasseler,directorofCapitalUniversity’schapelchoir.“Ireallyenjoyedthenewprogram.Itmakesmefeelgood
tobeapartofsuchagreatministry.AndIstillhavetotimetogoouttodinnerwithmyfriendsthisevening,”remarkedoneattendee.Additionally,newLSSboardmembersRev.JohnDavidson,JohnGuldig,ErikaClarkJones,Rev.WilliamMcKee,RonSeiffertandScottYoungwereelected.LeoGendersandDr.JimGinterwerealsoinductedtotheirsecondtermsontheboardofdirectors.Eachboardmemberbringswiththemauniquebackgroundandvaluableexperience,andwethankthemfortheirservice.

Forchildren,themagicofChristmasliesinwakinguponChristmasmorningtopresentsunderthetree.Canyouimagethesadness–forbothchildrenandparents–whenthereisn’tenoughmoneyforpresents?Unfortunately,inthiseconomy,thissituationismorecommonthanyourealize. ForMarlaandherfourchildren,2010wasaroughyearandthereweren’tenoughfundsleftoverforChristmas.That’swhenthefamily,whowasalreadyreceivingcasemanagementservicesfromLSS’NorthernOhioMinistries(NOM),heardabouttheadopt-a-familyprogram. DuringtheChristmasseason,NOMsponsorstheprogram,whichallows
individualsororganizationsto“adopt”thechildrenfromafamilyinneedbyprovidinggiftstohelpcreateaChristmasthatmaynothavebeenpossiblewithoutthehelpofothers.Lastyear,NOMhelpedprovideaChristmasfor50childrenandtheirfamilies.ThefamilywhoadoptedMarlaandherchildrensaiditwasawonderfulexperiencefortheirfamily.“ItwasthemostexcitingChristmaswehaveeverhad,”saidSherry,themotherofthefamily.“ItwasamazingandtaughtmyfourchildrenthetruemeaningofChristmas.”IfyouwouldliketohelpinprovidingaspecialChristmastofamiliesinneed,[email protected].
